MEL OTT
When Mel Ott arrived in New York as a 17-year old, 160-pound outfielder in 1926, few could have realized that he would become the first National Leaguer to hit 500 home runs. "Master Melvin" played 22 seasons with the Giants, also managing them for six years. When he retired early in the 1947 season, he held National League marks for career home runs, runs scored, RBI, and walks.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
Tier 1 - "The Ultimate"
These are the absolute top MLB players of all time. Record setters, championship leaders, ancient legends and icons fading to glory... they define the history of the sport.
I'm going to list the players on the top 2 Tiers from before, plus Murray and Carter (Total: 82). Please make a full list of 40 players you consider the greatest or most Hall worthy.

Baseball Fever The Teams of Yesteryear New York Giants PDA View Full Version : Mel Ott GIANT 03-02-2005, 08:35 AM Today is the 96th birthday of the late great Mel Ott. Ott made his major league debut at age 17 and hit .322 as a 19-year-old. Over his 22-year big-league career, spent entirely with the New York Giants, Ott hit 511 home runs and collected 2,876 hits.Ott made his major league debut at age 17 and hit .322 as a 19-year-old. Over his 22-year big-league career, spent entirely with the New York Giants, Ott hit 511 home runs and collected 2,876 hits. westsidegrounds 03-02-2005, 09:52 AM Here's a good shot of his distinctive, to put it mildly, batting style ... not unreminiscent of Sadaharu Oh of the other Giants, although whether the latter copied Ottie is a matter of controversy.
Trivia Question: Who's the only major league player-manager to win a HR title? 03-02-2005, 11:05 AM "Look over there. Do you know a nicer guy than Mel Ott? Or any of the other Giants? Why, they're the nicest guys in the world, and where are they? In last place!" - Leo Durocher
"The knock on Ott is that he took advantage of the short porch in the Polo Grounds. The wall in right was only 258 feet away. Of his 511 career homers, 323 of them were hit in the Polo Grounds, the most lopsided of any great slugger. But historian Tony Blengino makes an interesting point. Of Ott's final 144 homers, 111 of them were at home. So Ott for most of his career was helped slightly by his home park for most of his career, and it only had a large effect in his twilight years. What the Polo Grounds did is that it allowed Ott to extend his career several more years. Blengino notes that without the Polo Grounds Ott still probably still would have finished with over 400 dingers. The other dominant home run hitter in the National League at the time? Rogers Hornsby at 301".

Career Hitting Record Other Resources Armed with a letter of recommendation from the owner of a semi-pro team he'd played for, Ott visited John McGraw of the New York Giants in August of 1925 and asked for a tryout. He was a catcher but, when McGraw saw the 5-foot-9, 170-pounder, he asked if he'd ever played the outfield. "Only when I was a kid," the sixteen-year-old Ott replied. After watching the left-handed hitter drive some home runs over the short right field fence at the Polo Grounds, McGraw decided to sign him. Ott had an unusual batting style: He stood with his feet wide apart, lifted his right leg as the ball was released, then put it down quickly, after a stride of just a couple of inches, to begin his swing. McGraw was afraid a minor-league manager might change his stance and ruin him as a hitter. Ott didn't appear in any games in 1925, but he sat next to McGraw on the bench and got advice on how to hit various NL pitchers. The following season, he got into just 35 games, batting .383. In 1928, Ott became a regular, mostly in right field but also playing second and third base at times. He led the league with 113 walks in 1929, when he batted .328 with 42 home runs and 151 RBI.
