Now, the challenge is, can Arizona do it again? The problem with building a playoff team out of an expansion team this quickly is that you have to do it with older players; your farm system hasn't been around long enough to start producing sufficient major-league talent, and the players you can pick up via free-agency or trade are 30+ veterans with big price tags. You can get to the playoffs in a hurry, if you can stay healthy, but those 30something players are more likely to get hurt, and are on the downside of their careers. Arizona's 30somethings did stay healthy last year, and they did produce several career years, and Arizona blew away their projections. I wouldn't bet on it all happening again next year.

HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Baltimore Orioles Baseball History Baltimore Orioles (major leagues), professional baseball team and one of five teams in the East Division of the American League (AL). Starting out as the St. Louis Browns, the franchise moved to Baltimore at the end of the 1953 season and was renamed the Baltimore Orioles after the black-and-orange birds of that name. The team plays at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland, and wears uniforms of white, orange, and black.
Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore Oriole Park, where the Baltimore Orioles baseball team plays, was built between 1989 and 1992. It was designed like traditional American ballparks, which feature natural grass and allow spectators to sit close to the field. Oriole Park inspired the construction of similar baseball fields in Denver, Cleveland, and Arlington (Texas) during the 1990s.
The Orioles enjoyed their finest stretch from 1964 to 1983, a 20-season span during which they won seven division titles, six pennants, and three World Series championships. Baltimore’s lineups during this period included shortstops Mark Belanger and Cal Ripken, Jr., first basemen Eddie Murray and Boog Powell, pitcher Jim Palmer, third baseman Brooks Robinson, and outfielders Paul Blair and Frank Robinson. During his 17 seasons with the club, Earl Weaver, a two-time AL manager of the year, became one of the most admired managers in AL history for his ability to develop players and build winning teams.

TEMPE, Ariz. Jason Jennings proved that he isn't going to let being passed over as Colorado's opening day starter bother him. Jennings pitched two hitless innings in his first start of the spring, and the Rockies beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-6 Saturday. "I'm professional enough to put that beside us," Jennings said of manager Clint Hurdle's decision to give Joe Kennedy the first start. "I'm working on me, getting ready for that second game." He added: "You can't get much out of two innings, but I got through a pretty tough lineup and I was happy to go against a tough lineup because it helps break the ice a little bit more." Jeff Salazar's two-run single off Joel Peralta highlighted a five-run Colorado ninth. Angels newcomers Juan Rivera hit his first homer of the spring, Orlando Cabrera drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double and Steve Finley had two hits and a walk.

RAY CHAPMAN
Ray Chapman is the only player to die due to injuries suffered in a major league game. On August 16, 1920, he was struck in the head by a Carl Mays pitch and died the next day in his hospital bed. Chapman was an excellent shortstop, leading the American League in putouts three times and assists once. He hit .300 three times and led the league in runs scored and walks in 1917. His death was one of the reasons the spitball was outlawed.

To Come: Final analysis-best reliever of all time and greatest bullpen of all time. The 1990s and 2000s Moby Dick-Or the Whale In the Nineties: The 50-save reliever was born and born again. In 1990, Bobby Thigpen set the one-year record of 57 saves that still stands today. Two years later Dennis Eckersley became the second to reach 50. Reaching 50 saves in a season has now been done eight times and five times since the last round of expansion in 1998. In 1993, Lee Smith became the first pitcher to surpass 400 saves in his career. Smith ended his career with 478 saves in total. John Franco joined Smith in the 400-save club in 1999. The number of men in the 300-save and 200-save clubs exploded as well. Here is a progression of those men at the end of each decade (I used 100 as the minimum in previous analyses, but given that there are now 99 men with at least 100 saves for their career, this figure becomes cumbersome): , and 3 (well, plus 3)-a nice exponential progression.
