51. A Dry Heat - An Irreverent Look At Baseball From A Fan's Point Of View.
NowHitting.com, Digital baseball for the new Millennium. gregg olson alsochanged uniforms last week signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
http://www.nowhitting.com/dryheat000112.html
Would You Like Some Cheese with that Whine? In this day and age, baseball players change teams more often than Dennis Rodman changes hair color. The Free Agent Era has produced a boon in several industries. For example, with all the player movement fans are nearly required to buy a game day program just to see who is now on the roster. The team seamstress is now making overtime as well sewing on all of the names of the new players. With the changes, there is also a need for the media to meet and greet these new players. For better or worse, this also gives the players a chance to speak to reporters and give the fans a glimpse into their personalities and thoughts. Sometimes this is good, sometimes it isn't so good. In the past week, two former Arizona Diamondbacks players were signed by other teams and as part of their signings, they took the opportunity to take some pot shots at their old team and its fans. Andy Benes this past week signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. Now whether he was trying to tell the fans he was happy to be a part of the organization or he was just misquoted, we will never know. But he didn't endure himself to the Diamondbacks fans when he said his mind and his heart has been in St. Louis the past two seasons. Maybe that explains why he didn't pitch well last year. If he would have focused as much on his pitching as he did on St. Louis he may have been a 20 game winner.

Gagne Ewedscray Ybay Odgersday (Igpay
by Mike Carminati Gagne Ewedscray Ybay Odgersday (Igpay Atinlay) The Dodgers re-signed Eric Gagne to a $550K contract today, AP reported If you want to limit this definition to something more closely matching the definition of a closer from the late-Seventies until today, we can limit this group to just those pitchers who recorded 20 saves in the season discussed. That gets us down to 83. Here they are in ascending ERA order: Of the list above, nine besides Gagne exceed five strikeouts per walk with Dennis Eckersley twice exceeding ten (18.33 and 18.25). 14 besides Gagne top 10 strikeouts per nine innings (and Rob Nenn barely misses at 9.98) with Billy Wagner (14.95) and Armando Benitez (14.77) leading the list. Finally, there are just three other men who meet all three criteria (BB:K, K/9 IP, and WHIP). They are Bruce Sutter in 1977, Billy Wagner in 1999, and Bryan Harvey in 1991. Harvey just missed (9.52 K/9 IP) in 1993, and Dennis Eckerlsey was even closer (.91 WHIP) in 1992. Posted on Mar 2, 2003 at 4:40 PM

Former American League Rookie of the Year gregg olson was the special guest at USA baseball moved its national offices and training site from Tucson,
http://townofcary.org/depts/prdept/sports/usabaseball/
Overview USA Baseball , which selects and trains the Olympic team and other U.S. amateur teams, has chosen Cary for its national training center. The complex will be an expansion of the Town of Cary's Thomas Brooks Park . The training center, which will include lighted fields with bleachers and a clubhouse with offices, is tentatively slated for completion by 2006. USA Baseball will use Durham Bulls Athletic Park for international competition and also will have offices in Durham. Summer 2005 Update The Town Council has approved a construction contract for the facility. Construction is estimated to take 18 months. The complex is scheduled to open for the 2007 season. More details Background USA Baseball staff members have moved into temporary offices in Durham while renovations occur at Durham Bulls Athletic Park for USA Baseball facilities there. The Town of Cary reached general terms of agreement with Heery International in January 2003 to design the training center. Heery International projects include the 1996 Olympic Stadium, which later became Turner Field, home of Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves.

When Bad Things Happen To Good Pitchers
by Tom Ruane
So there seem to be two issues here: 1) what type of pitchers tend to have more errors committed behind them, and 2) what pitchers seem to let up once those errors have been made. To start with the first one, I looked at the play-by-play data from 1980 to 1997 and determined the fielding percentages when each pitcher was on the mound. Here are the players with the lowest team fielding percentages (500 innings minimum) along with how they ranked in the percentage of unearned runs allowed (where #1 allowed the highest and #426 the lowest): Name IP R ER UPct PO A ER PB FPct Rank Pat Zachry 597.2 279 239 .143 1793 698 76 .9704 16 Gene Garber 718.2 310 262 .155 2156 1091 97 3 .9710 7 Chuck Rainey 566.0 336 291 .134 1698 874 73 5 .9724 30 Jeff Fassero 1084.1 461 396 .141 3253 1433 132 2 .9726 20 Mike Hampton 592.1 296 250 .155 1777 928 75 10 .9730 6 Chris Welsh 537.1 297 266 .104 1612 878 69 .9730 160 Alejandro Pena 1057.2 427 365 .145 3173 1064 117 9 .9731 14 Juan Eichelberger 578.2 298 263 .117 1736 720 68 7 .9731 97 Ismael Valdes 647.2 248 218 .121 1943 710 73 1 .9732 80 Atlee Hammaker 1078.2 493 439 .110 3236 1485 129 3 .9734 128 Where:
