Baseball World Cup could be on the horizon, as soon as 2003 Friday, March 30, 2001 By JIM CAPLE
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Did Olympic baseball leave you somewhat underwhelmed last summer? Did Doug Mientkiewicz, Mike Neill and Pat Borders fail to keep you from switching to "Survivor" reruns? Did the U.S. team seem too little like the game's best players and too much like the Tacoma Rainiers? Are you still dreaming of the day when the game's best players from around the globe finally meet in a true World Series?
Mariners Season Preview

Don't lose hope. It could happen. And sooner than you think. Not in the Olympics, though. Because the Olympics are held in the summer during the middle of the baseball season, the schedule won't allow it. Unlike in the NHL, where teams don't play every day and the schedule could absorb a two-week shutdown during the All-Star break, there is no way to schedule an Olympic baseball tournament unless major league owners are willing to accept 10 or so fewer games (and the resulting revenue losses). That's not going to happen. ... Source: Major League Baseball

Most overpaid baseball players
From the Page 2 mailbag
Earlier this week, Page 2 listed our top 10 most overpaid baseball players, and we asked you to send us your choices. After hunting through more than 2,800 e-mails, here is how Page 2 readers ranked these fat-walleted ballplayers. Be sure to vote in the poll at right to crown the most overpaid ballplayer of them all. 1. Alex Rodriguez, Texas Rangers (571 letters)
Alex Rodriguez is one of the best in the game, but no baseball player is worth anything near $252 million.
A-Rod, gimme a break. At more than $20 million per who can justify that Where would the Rangers be without him? Right where they are now, in the cellar. When will the hemorrhage stop? When the patient is dead! And baseball is circling the drain right now. It really is sad that a $1 million per salary is laughed at. When will the fans say, "Enough already!"
Mel Cole
Lufkin, Texas
He's a great ballplayer, arguably the best all-around in the game, but no person is worth $252 million. Definitely not one who "works" three hours a day, for 162 days a year, for 10 years. The day the Rangers signed this ridiculous contract brought shock and disgust to many hard-working Americans who have to bust their back to make an honest living. What many people make over a year is thrown at this guy in about three plate appearences. What the hell is this world coming to?

Don't miss these great baseball flicks
By Jim Caple
ESPN.com
Angelina Jolie was at Seattle's stadium recently filming her new movie, "Life, Or Something Like It." Told that Jolie's character dates a Mariners second baseman in the movie, Seattle second baseman Bret Boone replied, "She's a lucky woman." Boone, not exactly the most humble player in the majors, said Brad Pitt is the actor who could best portray him in a movie, though reliever Brett Tomko suggested that given Boone's height (he's listed at 5-10), a better choice might be Haley Joel Osmant, the kid from "Sixth Sense." Jolie's movie is just part of a recent surge in baseball movies. What with all the hype for Billy Crystal's account of the Roger Maris-Mickey Mantle home run chase, "61*," you may have missed these recent baseball flicks that unfortunately went direct to video. . Comedian Yakov Schmirnoff's homage to the memorable race between Rickey Henderson (Don Cheadle) and Alfonso Soriano (John Turtorro) when they both pursued Babe Ruth's career walks record and a tense nation watched from the edge of its seats. You'll cry when Rickey's hair falls out in clumps. You'll laugh when Rickey forgets what team he's playing for. You'll applaud when Soriano works the count to 2-2 before popping out.

What do you think, guys, did MLB over-expand just a bit? Are there not about 150 jobs too many at the MLB level? God I hate watching wash-up old folks farm dregs in the bigs. I saw Awfulman play with class A Bakersfield in 1986! Of course the MLBPA, in all their wisdom, prevented the commish from down-sizing two franchises not long ago. How is it that the inmates can run the asylum? MLB expanded from 16 teams to 30 teams, but can't cut back to 28 teams if it wants to? I would like to see six franchises fold and get away from this preposterous "mini-division" / wild card garbage. Once the networks and the union start to run your business, it becomes beyond recognition.

ESPN.com: Jose Offerman ESPN.com: Jose Offerman
Jose Offerman has never gotten quite enough credit for the things he did well because the things he did poorly were so visible. Like, for instance, getting a stupid amount of money from a small-market franchise. As if that was Jose's fault.
His problem was that he didn't hit enough to be a first baseman, but couldn't field well enough to play second base. I mention this now because he played his third game this year at second for the Twins tonight, and only made two errors.
What Jose did well was take walks, and it's the reason he's had a long and varied career (as if that was a good thing).
In addition to being a bad fielder Jose was a bad baserunner. In a way, you could call Offerman a spry Dave Magadan. But I'm not sure why you would want to.
Will he have value this year if he qualifies at second base? All I can say is, more value than when compared to first basemen, but not really. No homers, no steals, a bad batting average. On base percentage is his best category. As Variety says frequently about oddball movies with no commercial potential: Could work in specialty situations.
