1998 Post-Season Review Kansas City Royals
By Tom Ruane
January 11, 1999 This article takes a look at how the Kansas City Royals did in the 1998 season relative to pre-season expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1998 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews
Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 752 714 Runs allowed 785 899 Run Margin -33 -185 Wins 76 72 Pythagorean wins 78 62 Placement 2nd 3rd The Royals had another bad off-season prior to last year. They lost their two best hitters, Jay Bell (their 1997 Player of the Year) and Chili Davis, to free agency; Kevin Appier, their best pitcher, had two operations and was lost for almost the entire year. They added Hal Morris, trying to come back after a poor injury-shortened season in Cincinnati, and Jeff Conine, who was traded after a bad year with the World Champion Marlins. While it might seem as if we came close (76 to 72 wins) in our prediction for the Royals last season, we were actually far too optimistic. Kansas City both hit and pitched far worse than we had anticipated. They had the biggest difference in baseball between their pythagorean wins (how they should have done considering the number of runs they scored and allowed) and their actual wins. This was due to a 17-16 record in one-run games and a 15-41 record in blowouts (games decided by 5 or more runs). Simply put, the Royals should have lost 100 games in 1998, and they could actually improve quite a bit next year and still finish with a poorer record.

... Home GOING BACK TO THE SHOW Since its inception in 1998, the Atlantic League has been home to professional ball players both in the early stages of their careers as well as the latter stages. Quiet simply playing in the Atlantic League means different things to different players. The league has seen such Major League players as Jose Canseco, Ruben Sierra, Tim Raines, Jose Lima, Rickey Henderson, Dante Bichette, Pete Incaviglia, Curtis Pride, Carlos Baerga, Jim Leyritz, Brendan Donnelly, Joe Borowski, Jose Offerman, Bobby Hill and countless others. Some of these players were looking for another Major League chance and played in the Atlantic League to stay involved in baseball, while others simply wanted to remain in the game as long as they possibly could. In its seven years of existence, the Atlantic League has served as the home for over 300 players who have Major League experience under their belt, more then 70 in the 2004 season.
Out of the 177 players that were sold to Major League Clubs, nearly half (44 percent) were pitchers. This statistic alone is enough to draw in young pitchers and players looking to play baseball for a Major League team. Another 10 percent were catchers, leaving the remaining 36 percent as position players. Nearly one whole team each season have had their contracts sold to a Major League club.

AL Central Preview
By BILL MADDEN Cy Young winner Johan Santana and the Twins should stay atop the weak AL Central. (Illustration by Ed Murawinski) In Detroit, there's a sense of renaissance, in Cleveland a feeling of cautious readiness and in Chicago a steady buzz of Ozzie optimism. Such are the converging fan sentiments in three American League Central cities grown accustomed to also-ran (or worse) status at the outset of what they all anticipate to be the year of their "Twinkie Munch." Not that the three-time defending champion Minnesota Twins have suddenly taken on an appearance of vulnerability — if anything they solidified their base over the winter by re-signing aces Johan Santana and Brad Radke through 2008 and 2006 respectively — it's just that the Tigers, Indians and White Sox all believe they've made significant strides toward establishing themselves as legitimate contenders. As usual, the Twins must find a way to compensate for payroll-induced departures — this year the left side of their infield in shortstop Cristian Guzman and third baseman Corey Koskie. Michael Cuddyer, who hit 12 homers in 339 at-bats while playing five positions last year, takes over at third while the farm system, which has sustained the Twins throughout this latest run of prosperity, has apparently again delivered in Jason Bartlett, who won the shortstop job in spring training. But the most important development as far as the Twins are concerned is the full recovery from knee surgery made by catcher Joe Mauer, arguably their most important player.

Game Diary: Day Baseball
by Aaron Gleeman May 20, 2004 This running diary is coming to you LIVE from my bedroom in my mom's house in Minnesota. I am joined by my trusty dog, Samantha, who has been sleeping since about noon yesterday, and a whole bunch of boxes that I still haven't unpacked since moving out of my dorm room last week. Amazingly, despite it being just 11:25 a.m., I have already been awake for about three hours. I was up bright and early to play a little 1-on-1 morning baseball with my uncle (I lost 4-3). Not sure exactly what 1-on-1 baseball is? Boy, are you missing out.

Misery Loves Company: Two Guys Watch Baseball

Baseball Fever
Game 76 - Mets
Mets 8, Phillies 3
Record: 38-38
Great night to be an Extra Innings ticketholder (unless you like the Boston Red Sox, of course, but I'm not sure I know anyone who fits that description). Every night's a good night to have made the investment, but this one was just about letter-perfect in timing and result.
The Mets sculpted a convincing win over the sagging Phils. And there was much rejoicing. But follow along for the post-game fun.
Moments after Danny Graves puts the finishing touches on an outing seemingly designed to provide Braden Looper a little job security breathing room, I jump channels just in time to see Brian Roberts hit Mike Stanton's one and only pitch of the night into the left-field stands to end the Orioles-Yankees game. Bedlam in Baltimore, with the best news for the O's being that Mike Stanton can probably go again tonight (and the best camera shot of the night being a post-walk-off glimpse of random, wide-eyed box seat fan Calvin Ripken mouthing "Wow . . . great game.") I can't stay in the Inner Harbor for long, though, as I'm onward and upward to Beantown. The Sox had turned a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 lead, but now it's 8-7, thanks to a pair of runs allowed by Mike Timlin.

Tuesday, July 26, 2005 Getting his chance After 17 years in Dodger Blue, Ebel now an Angel By Rich Evans
Deseret Morning News This is not Dino Ebel's first experience at Triple-A.
Ravell Call, Deseret Morning News Salt Lake's Dino Ebel has enjoyed tremendous success in his first year as the Stingers' skipper, and he's done it by working hard to help keep his players happy. But it's definitely his most enjoyable.
In 1991, the man who now manages the Salt Lake Stingers was a farmhand in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Drafted in 1988 out of Florida Southern University, Ebel had been in the minors three years when he got the call to report to Triple-A Albuquerque.
"I went there as a backup player, a utility player," Ebel said. "They said, 'Hey, we need a body,' and that's what I was."
In Albuquerque, he sat. And sat. For a month, he sat. He got to the plate exactly one time and promptly got drilled in the back. Getting hit by a pitch doesn't go down as an at-bat, only a plate appearance. He eventually scored a run, though, giving him one positive Triple-A statistic. Still, it wasn't the most rewarding of experiences.
"That was my only highlight in Triple-A," he said.
