Who am I? "I am the starting first baseman on a first-place team. I am super slow with limited defensive abilities. I have hit four home runs this season, none away from my home park."
Determining how much a slow first baseman with a so-so glove and a .288 slugging percentage hurts your team is a calculation that pushes the envelope of sabermetrics.

But it's also really funny.
(There's a college league team near where I live, the North Adams Steeplecats, that has a 5' 4" shortstop. The first time I saw him go to bat he bats leadoff I thought, "What is this, some feel-good 'let the bat boy take a swing' thing?")
posted by at 4:59 PM CST on August 8 Wait a sec: did the author get his gig solely on the basis of being the BSG's "buddy Hench"? And what do I win for knowing the answer to this post's question without looking? Besides agita, I mean. I am really pulling for Roberto Petagine. Not because I have the guy in a roto league. Not because I own the rights to his life story. Because I can't stand watching Warning Track Power. Fer Christ's sake Kevin: the Fenway clubhouse boys can get you 'roids.

MLB FOREIGN EXPANSION by Craig Tomarkin It all started when the Montreal Expos debuted in 1969. They made their first and only post season appearance in strike shortened 1981, with a 60-48 record. Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were the team's hitting stars and they managed to beat the Phillies three games to two in the opening playoff series. In Game 5, Steve Rogers pitched a shut out for them against Steve Carlton to win it. They were unable to outlast the Dodgers in the next series though as Fernando Valensuela allowed only 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings to beat them 2-1 in a thrilling come from behind Game 5 victory. As of 2002, we are still waiting for them to make a World Series appearance. The Toronto Blue Jays were the second foreign team to join the MLB in 1977. Again, a team from Canada. This franchise proved to be stronger than the Expos. They first made the playoffs in 1985 and again in 1989. The team soon became a force, making the playoffs three straight years from 1991 to 1993. The last two seasons they won back to back World Series, establishing them as the first foreign team to build an MLB dynasty. Who will follow as the next foreign team? Will it be another team from Canada or will another country step to the plate?

Looking Forward to 2005: Philadelphia Phillies Preview
by Sean Forman
As I sat down to write the Phillies essay this year (a week later than I was supposed to), I was very tempted to take my 2004 Phillies Essay and just substitute Kenny Lofton's name for Marlon Byrd, Corey Lidle's name for Eric Milton, Jon Lieber's for Kevin Millwood, and Charlie Manuel's for Larry Bowa's. Actually, I tried it, and the reusing last year's essay was working really well until I got to the spots where I appeared to comment on "Charlie Manuel's demonstrativeness". So I'm begrudgingly (and well past my deadline, sorry) writing a new essay this year, but I want the reader to keep in mind that not a whole lot has changed from last year. This, of course, means that the Phillies are the front runner for the NL East Crown, just like last year. Before I run down the Phillies 2005 chances, a short 2004 post-mortem is likely in order. Pitching. Pitching. Pitching. Some deluded folks might want to dwell on the team's hitting with runners in scoring position (.784 w/RISP vs. .788 in all situations) or the 390 strikeouts that the 3-4-5 hitters amassed, but all the blame falls sixty feet from home plate.

A Few Head-scratchers and Random Thoughts
By Tom Tippett
May 10, 1999 The early part of the 1999 season has left me scratching my head and wondering "what on earth were they thinking?" more than a few times. Here are a few of those puzzlers along with some random observations about the season to date.
"In left field for Seattle, Brian Hunter"
The Mariners entered the season with more outfielders than they had room for, and all of them Griffey, Buhner, Huskey, and Mabry got off to a good-to-very-good starts. So what's the problem? Well, it seems they've been having trouble finding a "real" leadoff hitter. They tried David Segui, and although he went 7-for-14 in his first series as a leadoff hitter, his career on-base percentage (OBP) is only a little above the league average, and you'd hope that your leadoff hitter would get on base more than that. So I'm not surprised that the team felt that their offense might be more efficient if they went out and acquired a legitimate top-of-the-order guy. But why Brian Hunter? There's no question that he has the speed for the role since 1996, he's averaged 50 steals a year with an excellent 84% success rate. And he's a terrific defensive center fielder. But his career OBP is a rather uninspiring .316 (thirty-three points below Segui's), and there's no way that his steals can make up for the fact that he reaches base at least 50 fewer times per season than you'd expect from a good leadoff hitter. Furthermore, you're taking playing time away from Mabry and Huskey, who have already combined for 8 homers in 1999. That's half as many as Hunter has hit in his entire career.
