'Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis GM rewrites the rules for what makes a winning team Sunday, May 25, 2003 By Brian O'Neill, Post-Gazette Columnist When Billy Beane was in high school, every baseball scout in America yearned for him. Fast, strong and handsome, he seemed to have been custom-made for the diamond. "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game" By Michael Lewis Norton ($24.95) Beane scooped up his bonus money, started playing the game for pay and, boyo, did he stink. This is the unlikely hero of Michael Lewis' account of why the Oakland A's win consistently on thin budgets. Beane, Oakland's general manager, looked at the way he was scouted and saw that the wise old men of the game had little more foresight than a fungo bat. The verities of baseball mean nothing to Beane. He won't sign the high school Adonis with seemingly limitless potential; the A's want that fat catcher from the University of Alabama who led his league in walks. Thus do they win.

The book, zooming its way up the bestseller lists, is a tell-all about O'Neill's 1953 Senior Prom date at Lincoln High in St. Louis, Missouri. The book outlines O'Neill's June 1953 date with Luciani, an Italian girl known at the school for her "big sweaters" and her "easy" nature, starting with the moment at which he asked her out. "We were in the cafeteria, in between math and history classes, and I sat next to her and said 'Patty, would you do me the honor of being my prom date?' And she said 'yes Paul, I would.' And you know, that's all she said. I had to talk more. I had to tell her when I would come and get her and whether or not my dad would drive us and you know, all she did was listen! I should have known right then and there the date would be problematic. Can you imagine one person just *listening* to another? It was as though she cared about my feelings or something." The book goes on to portray the evening as even more "listening" on the part of Luciani. "It was as though she cared about what I thought, about my ideas. It was strange. It was like dating a mute or something. I should have seen it as a red flag."

My VERY FAVORITE ballplayer is coming back to the Yanks for one more annum, says ESPN. Now, the Braves just need A-Rod and all is well. grendel 11-13-2000, 12:47 PM The Braves need more than A-Rod, Nick. I mean, hate to rain on your parade, but their standing is not looking all that great here for the upcoming go-round.
'Course, you're FROM Atlanta, so I expect you to have a skewed (read: dumb) view of the Braves.
I still love you though. grendel 11-13-2000, 12:48 PM (Nick's expected response):
Why dont'cha go and write a review or something?
Pants-tard! Nick Nunziata 11-13-2000, 12:52 PM I study baseball very closely and actually predicted the Mets to win the division.
A-ROD will be a much needed fit. If Galaragga leaves, we'll see Surhoff at first. Chipper MAY move to the outfield, which would allow Furcal to go to third, or they'd bring Wes Helms up. Either way, we're solid.
If we get A-ROD and don't lose TOO much, I'd say they were poised to be in the top 3 teams in hardball.

Fave players of all time? This is a tough one for me... I'd have to say Nolan Ryan. Jim Thome can play for my team anyday. matt 05-27-2000, 08:29 AM Don Mattingly is God.
He's a freaking tragic hero. All those years he was about the only thing worth watching between the white lines at Yankee Stadium, then his back goes out, and WHAMMO! The Yanks win 3 out of 4 World Series. The Yankees had something like 17 shortstops while he was playing before Jeter came along, and he still won a bucket full of gold gloves.

Baseball Fever General Baseball PDA View Full Version : Me and My Dad : Paul O'Neill LivnLegend 02-10-2004, 03:25 PM Someone gave me Me and My Dad : A Baseball Memoir by Paul O'Neill. I have never been a Yankees or Reds fan by any stretch of the imagination but I always liked watching O'Neill play. He was a major redass, no doubt about that, always fired up, never allowing himself to settle for mediocrity.
The book is a simple read and unfortunately (for me) it is more about personal relationships than it is baseball events. Milestones and memorable moments (like World Series wins) are glossed over so that the focus can be put on O'Neill's relationship with his father and other members of his family. It's quite a sentimental memoir, nothing like I would expected from the fiery O’Neill. It is hard to imagine him getting maudlin but he does.
The father-son angle has been played up a million times but it does well with a baseball themes. You’ll zip through the book in no time at all and it’s a good read if you had any sort of similar relationship with your father that the book will help you fondly recall.

    ALONE AMONG:
Standing on the Mound: The Virtues of Baseball (Elizabeth Thecla Mauro, June 2005, Crisis)
Baseball is not only a reflection of America’s motto. With no clock, no fouls, no penalties, and the game’s heart-stopping ability to confound the most restless fan (“It ain’t over ’til it’s over,” said Yogi Berra), baseball is an expression of the nation’s cherished “can-do” spirit, its individualism, and its willingness to sometimes go it alone. The essential dynamic of the game, after all, is that for nine innings, 18 men are engaged in a contest in which, ultimately, each and every player finds himself utterly alone—one man taking on a whole world that wants him to fail. Perhaps nowhere was that dynamic, and the distinctly American character that embraces it, more perfectly demonstrated than at Yankee Stadium on two separate occasions during the 2001 World Championship games between the Bronx Bombers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Only weeks earlier, New York had lost 3,000 of its citizens, police, and firefighters in the deadliest attack made on American soil. The rubble in Manhattan was still smoldering, and the nation was still on its knees—uncertain, unsure, and afraid.

Main Journal Page December 06, 2002 Paul O'Neill Resigns; Paul Krugman Congratulates Himself Paul Krugman congratulates himself on his now long-ago judgment that Paul O'Neill was unlikely to be a good Treasury Secretary. I confess that Paul Krugman was right. The Treasury Secretary should (a) be a strong voice helping the U.S. pursue good economic policies, (b) understand what the economic policies of the United States are, (c) be effective at using his extremely prominent and powerful post to tell outsiders about the economic policies of the United States, and (d) know how to use histruly excellent, dedicated, and very largecareer staff inside the Treasury building. Paul O'Neill was zero for four. This does surprise me. I was one of the people who back in the winter of 2001 was thinking that Paul O'Neill was likely to be a good Treasury Secretary. Everybody said he'd done a good job as Deputy Director of OMB in the Ford Administration. And you cannot do a good job as Deputy Director of OMB without knowing an immense amount about how and why the money flows through the U.S. government. Yet once he was sitting in the Treasury Secretary's seat, he seemed to know appallingly little and to be remarkably unable to learn.
