Adventure Yankee Fan Memories Baseball Musings Great Games I've Been To... On Being A Baseball Fan December 19 2000 : Think Back to April 3rd... In the 1990s, the Yankees often opened the season on the West Coast, and 2000 followed that precedent. ESPN brought Opening Day at Edison International Field into homes all across America, so loyal Yankees fans everywhere could see one of the Bombers' four "aces," Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez face a potent Anaheim line-up. Pumped up for their season by new manager Mike Scioscia, the Angels would have some of the league's best hitters in 2000, and Yankee-watchers were wondering if El Duque, plagued by back problems in Spring Training, would have the stuff to dominate as he had in the 1999 postseason. The last time he had faced the Angels, he had given up a career-high ten earned runs, and the Angels were the only team in the league with a winning record against the Yankees over the previous two seasons (12-10). El Duque would also be the first foreign-born pitcher to take the hill on Opening Day for the Yankees. Meanwhile, Ken Hill, who spent much of 1999 injured, took the assignment for Anaheim, for the fourth Opening Day start of his career.

Gimpy O'Neill save the game #78 Classic Moment: October 24, 1996 He was benched in Game 4. He was 1-for-9 in World Series at-bats. His left hamstring felt like it had gone 15 rounds with Mike Tyson. Yet when the Yankees needed a huge play to preserve a victory, Paul O'Neill gave them a colossal one. After a dramatic Game 4 win, Andy Pettitte kept the Yankee momentum going in Game 5, pitching a five-hit, 1-0 shutout against the Braves into the ninth. Joe Torre then brought John Wetteland in to finish the job. With Braves on first and third and two outs, Luis Polonia stood in the batter's box at Fulton County Stadium and fouled off six Wetteland fastballs before sending a searing line drive into right center. O'Neill, who had only shifted toward center a few pitches before, looked like an old man trying to catch a departing train. He hobbled, lunged and snared the hit that would have spelled a certain Braves victory. "I'm glad I had enough to get to the ball," O'Neill said.

The previous summer, in 1948, Campanella had been assigned by the Dodgers to St. Paul. Along with a spectacular brand of baseball, Campanella was in St. Paul to help break the color barrier in the American Association. It was an eventful stay. The Campanellas' first child was born in St. Paul. And in 35 games, Campanella batted .325. More notably, he hit 13 home runs in a mere 123 at-bats. Campanella approached O'Neill that next spring and said, "Marty, I liked that city of yours. I'd like to go back to St. Paul some day. Nice city, nice people." For more than half a century St. Paul fans watched their team from the cozy confines of Lexington Park.

Me and My Dad: A Baseball Memoir
Paul ONeill, Burton Rocks
Hardcover - May 2003
Paul O'Neill has rarely spoken publicly about the significant role his father played in his baseball career. But now, in Me and My Dad,he speaks from the heart about the man who inspired in him a love for the game and a determination to always play his best. For some, baseball is more than a game it's a way of life. Chick O'Neill was one of those people.
Paul recounts how his father, after serving as a paratrooper in World War II, pitched in the California minor league, until he discovered that his true passion was his family. Later he was devoted to his son's dream of becoming a professional ball player and was always there from coaching Little League to being in the stadium when Paul played for the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees. Former Red Paul O'Neill discusses his book, his dad and his storied career INTERVIEW BY RODGER PILLE Those who remember how Paul O'Neill patrolled right field when he played for the Cincinnati Reds won't be surprised to hear he's an impassioned author. The same fire he brought to each at-bat is on display in the pages of Me and My Dad , his first published book and in many ways the first soul-baring O'Neill has done since he broke into the big leagues in 1985. Whereas O'Neill the player wore his heart on his sleeve during his run with the Reds, 1985-1992 and his storied tenure with the New York Yankees he was never one to open up much in the public eye. In a recent interview with CityBeat , O'Neill acknowledges that he tended to let his numbers and all-out playing style speak for him when he played. But Me and My Dad was a chance not only to explore his career in retrospect, but to immortalize his father, Charles "Chick" O'Neill, who died in 1999 while Paul was still playing for the Yankees.

http://roadsidephotos.com/baseball/2003vc.htm
The 2003 Hall of Fame Veterans Committee Vote
The former 15-member Veterans Committee met once a year. Only those attending the meeting were eligible to vote, and vote totals were never released. The new system expanded the Veterans Committee to include all living Hall of Famers; all living recipients of the Ford C. Frick Award (broadcasters); all living recipients of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award (writers); and two members of the former Veterans Committee whose terms would not expire before 2003, Ken Coleman and John McHale. The new Committee, which for 2003 contained 85 eligible voters, would cast two separate ballots by mail: one for up to 10 of the 26 players ultimately selected for the Players Ballot, the other for up to 10 of the 15 managers, umpires and executives chosen for the Composite Ballot.
To qualify for the Composite Ballot, a nominee had to have been retired from baseball for five years. This waiting period was reduced to six months for candidates over 65. The rules expressly provided that those who both played and served as a manager or executive would appear on only one of the two ballots, but should be judged by their total contribution, and that "voting shall be based upon the individual's record, ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character and contribution to the game."
The fifteen names on the final list were then submitted to the 85-member electorate. With 79 of the 85 voting on the composite ballot, 60 votes were needed to elect any candidate. None of the fifteen received the necessary votes. Indeed, none came close, with only umpire Doug Harvey winning even a majority. Marvin Miller failed to become the first recipient of this newsletter elected to the Hall of Fame, while Buzzie Bavasi did become the first person known to have received votes for the Hall of Fame while a dues-paying member of SABR.

News Sports Paul O'Neill BY CHRIS SMITH New York was rough on Paul O'Neill at first. The Yankees were lousy and his car was stolen. Twice. But O'Neill made his Bronx debut in April 1993, a certain mayor was elected in November of that year, and before long the Yanks were champs and crime was nearly gone. Coincidence? Probably. But Paul O'Neill and Rudy Giuliani tenacious, occasionally obnoxious white ethnics with admirably high standards and secret soft sides will forever be symbols of the nineties New York resurgence. June 14, 2005 Standing on the Mound: The Virtues of Baseball
By Elizabeth Thecla Mauro
This woman was a deep reader with a gift for languages. She was no fool. Of all the seasons, it is perhaps easiest to put on the mind of a child in the summer, when the days are long and filled with sweet iced tea and fireflies, and even the oldest members of society go out in public wearing short pants and sandals. It is a season when flowers bud and tomato plants grow high, when you can stand on a shore, or before a roller coaster, and suddenly feel very small and full of wonder. Summer is a season of optimism, the virtuous by-product of childlike faith, and nowhere is that optimism more evident, and more innocent, than on a baseball field. It is a sweet melancholy that accompanies the fall, for even then fans of baseball look forward, clinging to the notion that in a mere six months they will again thrill to the sound of a 90-mile-an-hour ball cracking against a well-swung bat; they will sit in bleachers and eat salty hotdogs and gasp to see a man jump, spin, and throw another man out all in one graceful movement; and they will be filled, once again, with blameless wonder.

Moms get flowers; dads get ties. Moms get taken out to dinner; dads get ties. Moms get diamonds and beautiful cards; dads . . . well, you get the idea. Maybe it's because moms get weepy and dads suppress their emotions (I know, I know - generalizations). This year, there are a number of titles designed to help dad feel better about himself. As we all know, there are certain things men think they know more about than anyone else. Among these are breaking in a baseball glove, building a fire, and mowing the lawn. But for us men who are embarrassed to admit out loud that we do not possess such innate knowledge, help is on the way! Although most people seem to associate sports with the male gender, it is in fact moms who finish ahead when it comes to sporting events. Tune in to just about any football game when the camera covers the sidelines. What do the players say? "Hi, Mom!" It's time to give Dad his due. After all, how many childhood hurts are eased by fathers playing catch with their children, tossing the ball back and forth at the end of a summer's day, talking away the cares of the world.
