63. Duquette Firing
He stole troy O Leary from Milwaukee, (although O Leary s success was short Tankersley is considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball.
http://www.theinsidepitch.com/Duquette.html
The Demise of Dan Duquette
By Dan Williams
Spring 2002
Why did the new Red Sox owners make their first order of business firing Dan Duquette? I'll give you 2 reasons: Duquette's inability to support his field manager and inability to develop a productive farm system. The new ownership would not except the manner in which Duquette handled the Jimy Williams/Carl Everett tift. And the new ownership is going to make developing the farm system one of, if not, it's top priority.
The Red Sox, under Duquette, have chosen to ignore their farm system, (not signing draft picks and trading away pitching prospects), and rely on building the team through high priced free agents, trading for talent that hasn't developed yet, signing pitching rehab projects and signing international talent.
Duquette has given up starting pitching prospects to acquire players at the major league level. No one will argue with Tony Armas Jr. and Carl Pavano for Pedro Martinez. But Matt Kinney, a good prospect with the Twins ready to help in 2002, for Orlando Merced and Greg Swindell. Then there was Chris Reitsma for Dante Bichette from the Reds. Reitsma has big time stuff and he could start to develop in to a quality major league starting pitcher in 2002. Rich Rundles for Ugueth Urbina from the Expos could come back to haunt the Red Sox. The worst one could be Dennis Tankersley for Ed Sprague from the Padres. Tankersley is considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. For the sake of it say the Red Sox didn't make the Pedro trade. How would a low budget rotation of Armas Jr., Pavano, Reitsma, Tankersley and Kinney sound? That rotation would cost about $3M vs. the current rotation of Pedro, Burkett, Hermanson, Lowe and Castillo that goes for about $30M plus. Look at the flexibility you would have with the budget.

Fenhouse and Bare were named to the first team and Pinnow was a third team selection. Fenhouse, the teams' second baseman, hit at a .431 clip - ranking fourth on the Stout single season list - smacking out 47 hits in 109 at-bats. Generally the team's lead off hitter, Fenhouse scored 25 runs, collected 10 RBI, a team high 10 doubles, three triples and two home runs. Fenhouse also led the team in stolen bases, picking off 15 in 17 attempts. In only her second collegiate season, Fenhouse climbed to second on the Stout career list for stolen bases with 26. She also ranks fifth in career doubles with 16. This season, Fenhouse fielded at a .911 pace. Bare is a repeater to the all-region first team, this time being named as a utility player. On the mound, Bare was the Blue Devils' number one pitcher and posted a 15-8 overall record on a team that finished 21-20 overall and won the West Division title. A hard thrower, Bare set a new school single season mark for best ERA (1.00). Bare is tied with Karen Lien as the winningest pitcher in Stout softball history, winning 53 games. Bare finished her career with an ERA of 2.45. At the plate, Bare hit .330, going 35-for-106, with 20 RBI. Bare also became the career leader in most RBI (85) and most games played (167).

Info on BaseBall Back The Boston Red Sox gave it everything they had, but fell just short as they lost in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series to the defending champion New York Yankees, 6-1. It marks the end of a remarkable 1999 season for Sox manager Jimy Williams and the entire Boston Red Sox team. Picked to finish no better than fourth in the American League East by most of the so-called experts, the Red Sox surprised nearly everyone by winning the American League Wild Card finishing only four games behind the A.L. East Champion Yankees. The team then thrilled fans with their come-from-behind Division Series win against the Cleveland Indians. Yankees manager Joe Torre called this year's Sox team the toughest team the Yankees have had to play in the four years he's been the Yankees manager. "the way they played and it's a credit to Jimy they just wouldn't go away," Torre said. "They had a lot of tenacity and I congratulate them on the year they've had." Said Williams, who yesterday was named the American League Manager of the Year by The Sporting News, said, "This team is a special team. They did a lot for this city this summer. They hung tough and they hung together."

    By BostonMac , Section MLB
Posted on Mon Jul 11, 2005 at 09:04:49 PM EST The first part of this story is found here Next it was on to our nation's capital, and the newest addition to the Major League Baseball landscape, the Washington Expos/Nationals, who are inexplicably in first place in a division that also includes the annual NL East champs (Atlanta), the Boston Red Sox old-timers team (Mets), the 2003 World Series champs (Florida), and the perennial underachieving Phillies. Somehow, Curley and I landed a penthouse hotel room at the Alexandria Hilton with a panoramic view of D.C. that reminded me of the view from the Jedi Council room on Coruscant. Or if that image doesn't work for you, think of Ferris Bueller leaning on the window on the top floor of the Sears Tower, only not quite as high. Either way, we had a fantastic view. Over the winter I was skeptical when I heard about baseball returning to D.C. Although I figured playing home games at Rogers Park in Brighton would be an upgrade over Le Stade Olympique , I was convinced that there had to be a reason why two previous attempts to have the Senators by the shores of the Potomac resulted in one mass exodus to Minnesota and another to Texas. I thought the population of DC is too transient and distracted by other things; too many government types who aren't from the Beltway area and who probably have allegiances to other teams anyway. All the Texans that W. imported to the District would probably just as soon play chess with Ted Kennedy than turn their backs on the Rangers or Astros. Plus, the Orioles, with their still-gorgeous jewel of a ballpark 40 miles away, would pummel them in attendance.

Major League Baseball Showdown 2000
Setting: It's baseball. Major League baseball. You play baseball. With (and this is the tricky part) cards representing real baseball players.
Game Play: Before we get started, I have to get this off my chest: I don't like baseball. I don't watch baseball. And I couldn't care less about baseball. On the other hand, I like this game! I've played a lot of really bad sports games for these reviews and this one of the best so far. It's not Fastbreak, whose twisted sense of humor appeals to me, but it is a heck of a lot better than RedZone or Top of the Order.
In MLBS2000 (long name, huh?) you assemble a team made out of various Player cards, just as you would a real baseball team. Them, you and your opponents play a simulated game of baseball. The mechanics are lightning fast. The pitcher rolls a twenty-sided die and adds the number to his "Control" stat. If that is higher than the batter's "On Base" stat, the pitcher has the "Pitcher's Advantage," and if not, the batter has the "Batter's Advantage."
Once the pitcher has determined this, the batter's player rolls the die and consults a chart. Which chart? Well, if the pitcher has the advantage, look at the chart on the pitcher card. If the batter has the advantage, look at the chart on his card. The charts list results such as Single, Double, Triple,Homer, Walk and Out. Each result has a number. If the batter rolls a 15, it may be a result of Out on the pitcher card, but a result of Single on the batter. It all depends on who has the Advantage. This mechanic takes approximately twelve seconds to master.

After being named Red Sox general manager, Theo Epstein promised fans a "$100 million player development machine." The machine he inherited needed a total overhaul. Last November the Sox had only 28 players worth keeping on their 40-man roster, and this spring, Baseball America ranked their minor league system 27th out of 30 organizations.

hypertext narrative and baseball
The patterns and structures of hypertext narrative sometimes seem complex, and a few critics dismiss hypertext because it does not always fit into familiar dramatic structures. But hypertext's patterns are not confined to avant-garde experiments; the patterns that help us understand hypertext fiction are patterns we see in other large-scale narratives journalism, history, memoir, and technical writing. Farther afield from the friendly confines of literature, the narratives of sport are also large and complex. Perhaps the patterns of hypertext may seem less forbidding as we find them in the narratives of professional baseball. While pundits fret that television and new media somehow make the audience passive and inattentive, thoughtful observation reveals surprising scope and depth even in popular entertainment. Cycles are central to hypertext and to baseball. In hypertext fiction, the rhythms of recurrence created by intersecting link paths are perhaps the central feature.
