When he left Japan to sign with the Dodgers in 1995, Nomo and his convoluted windup brought a frenzy not seen in Los Angeles since Fernando Valenzuela looked skyward in the '80s. But with each passing year, hitters seemed to catch up to the human tornado. His loss totals and ERA steadily increased in each of his first three seasons, although his strikeouts remained relatively static. After leaving LA in 1998, Nomo repeatedly shifted organizations, either seeking a better contract or being dropped by clubs that didn't want to gamble on another year from him. Yet Hideo often had the last laugh, tossing quality games for his new franchises, including his second no-hitter in his first appearance with the Boston Red Sox in 2001.

Nomo Hideo
Date of Birth 31 August 1968 Place of Birth Osaka Nomo Hideo is a pitcher for Los Angeles Dodgers. He is the first Japanese player to play in the American Major Leagues since Masanori Murakami who pitched for the Giants between 1964 and 1965. He wanted to be a professional baseball player ever since he was in elementary school. He learned to play baseball by playing with the other kids. At first, he played in the Japanese Minor Leagues between 1986 and 1989. In 1988, he participated in the Seoul Olympics as an ace pitcher for the Japanese team, and won a silver medal. He joined the Kintetsu Buffaloes of the Japanese Pacific League in 1990. His record was 78 wins and 46 defeats, and he took part in the All-Star game all five of his seasons. He was famous for his strange pitching motion which was called 'Tornado'. In 1995, Nomo burst upon the Major League scene. Though he couldn't win his debut game, he struck out the opponents one after another. He recorded his first Major League victory vs. New York on June 2, and took part in the All-Star game as the starting pitcher of the National League. He thus became very popular among not only Japanese but also Americans. His current record is 13 wins and 6 defeats, which helped The Dodgers to win the National League Western Championship in 1995.

The Dodgers' Korean fans have a hero of their own
by Norman Sklarewitz / Los Angeles I T MAY HAVE LOOKED like just another baseball game. But for the Korean community of Los Angeles, the April 11 clash between the local Dodgers and the Florida Marlins was much, much more than that. On the mound as the starting pitcher for the home team was 22-year-old Park Chan Ho, the first South Korean ever to play in the American big leagues. Park and his fans had good reason to be nervous. In the press box were about 60 Korean journalists, about half of whom had flown in to cover his bid for a place among baseball's best. Back home in Korea, a potential TV audience of 40 million was anxiously watching. But, as intense as the media attention was, it was not the only challenge Park faced out there. He had his own demons to defy. The Korean had been in precisely the same position before and had failed. That was in 1994, when he played only two games for the Dodgers before being judged not ready and being sent back down to the minor leagues. He was called up again in September last year, but, once more, appeared only twice before being dispatched to the New Mexico desert to play for the Dodgers' farm club, the Albuquerque Dukes. The trouble with Park, as even his most devoted fans acknowledge, is that he can be as disappointing as he can be devastating. Which would he be against the Marlins?
