document.write(''); 04/05/2001 - Updated 11:35 AM ET No, No Hideo By Steve Gardner, USATODAY.com Wednesday's Roto Monster By Roberto Borea, AP Hideo Nomo thanks the crowd at Camden Yards after throwing his second career no-hitter. Roto Roost tidbits In what has become a rite of spring in my fantasy league, our comedic auctioneer always gets a small chuckle when Hideo Nomo 's name is brought up. "Hideous Snowman," he says. And then Nomo proceeds to go for a snowman ($8) or less. (This year it was $6.) But Nomo owners probably feel as if they've snowed the rest of their league after the Japanese right-hander's no-no last night in Baltimore. In his first start for Boston, Nomo not only held the Orioles hitless, but he also struck out 11. We all knew a Red Sox pitcher just might throw a no-hitter this week against the Orioles, but we all figured Pedro Martinez would be the one to do it.

Nomo wins 200th game in pro baseball
Reaches milestone as Rays down Brewers

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Hideo Nomo got a well-deserved beer dousing from his teammates. Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitcher Hideo Nomo winds up and throws a pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers in this multiple exposure photo Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Florida. Nomo, who began his career in Japan, recorded his 200th victory as a pro as Tampa Bay won 5-3. Nomo allowed two runs in seven innings for his 200th combined major league and Japanese win, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays over the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 on Wednesday night. The win qualified Nomo (4-6) for the Meikyukai, one of two special honors for Japanese players. Membership is automatic after a player reaches 2,000 hits or 200 wins. He is the 16th pitcher and 45th member overall. The other top honor is the Japanese Hall of Fame, where members are elected. "Everybody poured beer on me, and it was really good fun," Nomo said through an interpreter. "I think it will be a real good memory one day because I got to celebrate with my teammates, and it's really good for the fans." Nomo's combined record is 200-142, including 122-106 in the majors.

BASEBALL
America's most successful export
Baseball was introduced into Japan from the United States around 1873. As schools established their own teams for club activities, its popularity spread rapidly. Although professional baseball is Japan's largest spectator sport, the game still has a strong appeal for amateurs, particularly at the high school and university levels. Many major corporations also sponsor their own amateur teams. In Japan's 2 professional leagues, games are televised almost daily during the April to October playing season, and popular players stand out as national heroes.
Amateur Baseball
Professional Baseball Stars of the Game Internationalization High school baseball attracts nationwide interest. Twice each year, during the spring and summer, the best high school teams in Japan compete at Koshien Stadium, in Hyogo Prefecture, where the tournaments have been held since 1915. After elimination rounds, in which more than 4,000 teams participate every year, the top teams from all of Japan's 47 prefectures vie for the national championship. Tournament games from Koshien are broadcast nationwide on NHK television and radio. Hordes of classmates and players' family members travel to Hyogo to attend the games. In the course of each tournament, as many as 1 million spectators fill the stands. Back in the home towns of teams competing in the finals, it is not unusual to see business activity and even traffic on the streets come to a halt while people gather in front of their television sets or tune in to the radio.

Hideo Nomo.

The Japanese baseball season kicked off during the first week of April. That player was nomo hideo, a former star pitcher of the Kintetsu Buffaloes.
http://www.embjapan.dk/spotlight/baseball.htm
The Japanese baseball season kicked off during the first week of April. Having first been imported to Japan from USA, baseball has become a national sport in Japan on a par with the traditional sport, sumo wrestling. Nowadays the teams are followed by a large number of fans, and the enthusiasm covers professional as well as amateur baseball. Baseball
America's most successful export Baseball was introduced into Japan from the United States around 1873. As schools established their own teams for club activities, its popularity spread rapidly. Although professional baseball is Japan's largest spectator sport, the game still has a strong appeal to amateurs, particularly at the high school and the university levels. Many major corporations also sponsor their own amateur teams. In Japan's two professional leagues, games are televised almost daily during the April to October playing season, and popular players are regarded as national heroes. Amateur Baseball In terms of participation, baseball is the most widely played sport among male elementary schoolchildren and junior high school students (for safety reasons, both use a soft rubber ball, the same size as a regular baseball). Competitions are generally limited to the local level.
