ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES IS BYUNG-HYUN KIM ANOTHER HIDEO NOMO? nly an Arizona Diamondbacks rally in the 9th inning of Game 7 spared Byung-Hyun Kim the ignominy of being labeled the first Asian pitcher ever to cost his team the World Series. It was a nightmare season finish for a 22-year-old prodigy who had begun his major league career so brilliantly less than two years earlier.
In college Kim was Number 1 on the Corean National team, even ahead of Chanho Park, four years his senior. Signed by the Diamondbacks in the spring of 1999, Kim outperformed for two farm teams before being called up in May 2000 to pitch relief. A rising fastball served up via an unnerving, nearly underarm motion quickly earned him the rap of being tough to hit. He racked up 111 kills in 70.2 innings while giving up only 52 runs. And he was all of 21.
By mid-2000 there was even talk of a slot on the All-Star team. The talk stopped in July when he was sent down to Tucson. Kim returned two weeks later to show enough improvement to become the top contender for the closer job. By season's end he made it known to a skeptical Bob Brenly that he was ready to start.
The 2001 season magnified Kim's promise and problems. His 93-mph underarm fastball could retire batters like clockwork except when he threw too many balls, took too long to unload pitches, didn't challenge the batters enough. After a rocky spring and an impressive summer Kim hit the skids in September by giving up a series of crucial homers. Brenly kept the faith into the World Series with nearly disastrous consequences.

Nomo left Japan with Makoto "Mac" Suzuki on Feb.13 from Narita Airport. Mac of the Seattle Mariners and Nomo have been training together in Tokyo to prepare for the coming seaon. Nomo will be going into camp with the Los Angeles Dodgers from Feb.15 in Florida while Mac will be joining his team in Arizona. 1996 Post Season for Nomo Awarded in Japan
Toyota presented Nomo with a golden key to their luxury car on Nov.19. The vehicle is worth 6 million yen. The gift is to reward Nomo for achieving a no hitter game in September. He has a contract with Toyoda, and appears in their commercials. Nomo pitches in the '96 Super Major Series
He pitched on November 2, on the second of the 8 day series played between the US Major League players and Japanese all-stars. Initially, Nomo was going to pitch 2 innings. He pitched an extra inning though because he was doing so well. Ichiro was the only Japan player to ground Nomo's pitch to the center in the 1st inning. Nomo certainly brought a great excitement to the spectators at the Tokyo Dome and those watching TV at home. There were fans wearing Dodger uniforms and holding up signs with his name. The moment he walked toward the pitcher's mound, everybody was flashing their camera's. Catching his ball was Mike Piazza. So the stage was perfectly set in Tokyo for those who'd dreamed of seeing Nomo in his own country. He was the starting pitcher again on November 7 for the 6th game of the series. He mentioned that he actually asked to pitch that day. The site of that game, Koshien Stadium is located between Kobe and Osaka, quite near where Nomo grew up. He had friends and relatives coming to watch him from the stands. Of course, the stadium was packed with fans who longed to see the topnotch hero from their hometown. However, Nomo didn't pitch as well as he did the previous time. He lost 4 runs in the 4th inning. Yutaka Wada tripled to bring home 3 runners. And Nomo's former rival Kazuhiro Kiyohara drove in another run. Nomo though didn't seem to be disappointed about his performance in the game. Nomo said after the All-Star Games that he will go back to the US in February.

HIDEO NOMO'S 1996 SEASON WITH THE LOS ANGELES DODGERS
National League Playoff Series
The Dodgers lost the first 2 games to the Atlanta Braves. Nomo was assigned to pitch in the 3rd game on Oct. 5. However, he was knocked out in the 4th inning, giving up 5 runs, 5 hits and 5 balls. His team scored only 2 points. The 3rd straight loss has eliminated the Dodgers from playing in the World Series. Nomo's last showing this year has resulted in great disappointment. Pitcher of the Month
Nomo has been selected National League pitcher of the month for September. He recorded 3 wins and a loss that month and an ERA of 1.91. This is the second time that Nomo has won the award. His first was in June 1995. *33rd game
Nomo pitched for the last time in the official season in the National League West on Sept. 28. If the Dodgers won this game against the San Diego Padres, the victory would've given the Dodgers first place in the league. The Dodgers took the lead by scoring in the 2nd and 3rd innings one run each. In the 6th inning though, the Padres caught up. Nomo was pulled down from the mound in the 7th. In the 8th, Tony Gwynn broke the tie to take the Padres to a 4 to 2 victory. Nomo finished the season with 16 wins and 11 losses. *32nd game
Unfortunately, Nomo failed to help the Dodgers keep the lead against the San Diego Padres. He lost 3 runs which included a 2 run homer in the 5th inning. The game was won by the Padres 3 to 2. This game on Sept 22 has inched the Padres closer to the Dodgers in the National League West Division. There's only 0.5 game between the teams as a result. Nomo lost his 11th game.

TORONTO The Tampa Bay Devil Rays designated struggling right-hander Hideo Nomo for assignment on Saturday. Advertisement Nomo lasted just 2 2/3 innings in Friday's 11-6 loss to Toronto, allowing seven runs and nine hits with three walks. It was the third time in the past five starts that Nomo allowed at least six runs, and dropped him to 1-7 with a 10.32 ERA in road games this season. Nomo, who will turn 37 next month, said he won't pitch in Japan if he doesn't get signed by another major league team. "I want to keep playing in the majors so I'm going to wait for somebody to call," Nomo said through an interpreter. After Friday night's game, manager Lou Piniella said someone would be removed from the rotation if starter Doug Waechter was ready to return from tendinitis in his right index finger. Nomo went 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA in 19 starts. The first Japanese-born player to play in the majors after playing professionally in Japan has a record of 123-109 in a career that began when he was the 1995 NL Rookie of the Year for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

NEW YORK The New York Yankees signed right-hander Hideo Nomo to a minor league contract Wednesday, turning to yet another discarded pitcher to fill their injury-ravaged rotation. Advertisement The Yankees claimed the 37-year-old Nomo off waivers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who designated him for assignment on July 16 after he went 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA. Nomo hasn't pitched for 10 days, and Yankees manager Joe Torre said he wasn't an option to pitch on Saturday a slot that remains vacant. "He's got to get some work in, sharpen up," Torre said. "It's like being on the DL." Al Leiter, making his third start for the Yankees on Wednesday night against Minnesota, was acquired on July 16 from the Florida Marlins after being designated for assignment. When the Yankees on Tuesday pushed back Pavano's return from his injury and scratched Brown's scheduled start Thursday, New York suddenly became two pitchers short this week.

Nomo became the fourth player in major league history to throw a no-hitter

Nomo's first no-hitter, in September 1996 as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is the only one ever pitched at Colorado's high-altitude Coors Field. Now, he's the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter at 10-year-old Camden Yards. ``Tonight was better,'' he said, recalling that there was a two-hour rain delay in his initial no-hitter. This game was delayed at the start for 43 minutes because of a power outage, but once the lights came on, it was lights out for the Orioles. ``He mixed his pitches well,'' said Baltimore's Jerry Hairston, who struck out three times. ``I've been in the major leagues for parts of four seasons

by Jon Weisman oddly written article about a Japanese ballplayer (scroll down if you click on the link): TOKYO (AP) - Hideo Nomo is giving back to the system that allowed him to become one of the best pitchers on either side of the Pacific. Nomo, who joined the Dodgers in 1995 and was rookie of the year his first season, said he was inspired to lend his name to the team by the charitable efforts of his fellow major leaguers. It occurs to me that this might be the biggest offseason move the Dodgers have made. Update: Frank McCourt was in Osaka last year hoping to purchase the team and the surrounding metropolis, but was rejected by semipro league officials. A gag order prevents McCourt from commenting. Real Update: Here is a more full account Anyway, the Japan Information Network wrote: About 50 people, ranging from former pros to veterans of high-school baseball, took part in the tryouts held in April to select players for the team. The team chose 12 players, including trainees, and began practicing soon after. As it is a truly amateur team, the players receive no salaries. They earn their livings working in places like factories and gas stations by day and attend practices in the evenings. The team aims to start competing in official games from spring 2004, but the dream held by every player is to use the opportunity as a springboard to a professional career - just like Nomo did.
