HIDEO NOMO AN OPPOSING VIEW OF BASEBALL'S NON-LOCAL HERO
(Sent to Fukuzawa, ISSHO, and Friends Mon, 31 Mar 1997) BUNTING: NOMO NOT TRYING TO LEARN ENGLISH, THEY SAY I ran across something in the Daily Yomiuri this morning that set me a-thinking. Although I spend about as much time on the Sports Pages as I do on the Japanese Op-Ed (always flaccidly calling for reform), an article on Hideo Nomo did sound worthy of retyping to everyone. This is from Sunday, March 30, 1997's DY, pg 25 . A few comments follow. ARTICLE BEGINS NOMOLOS ANGELES' ARTFUL DODGER OF SPEAKING ENGLISH By Bill Plaschke, Los Angeles Times VERO BEACH, FlaHe wades through the crowd here, bodies straining at the ropes to touch him, children shouting his name, and you think of opportunities. He sits in front of the TV cameras, smiling, respectful, and you think of possibilities. He walks through the clubhouse, younger pitchers nudging each other, watching him for clues to greatness, and you think of the question. Isn't it time Hideo Nomo learned English? Isn't it time he invested more of himself into a team and community that have invested so much in him? The good news is, Nomo has returned sound and strong as he prepares for his third Los Angeles Dodger season. The bad news is, interpreter Michael Okumura has returned with him. He's in the clubhouse before games. Down the hall from the dugout during games. With reporters after games.

HIDEO NOMO APOLOGIA
(Sent to Fukuzawa, ISSHO, and Friends Wed, 2 Apr 1997) I know this Nomo topic I brought up seems to be a non-issue, but something just doesn't sit well with me. I'd like those who might be interested in issues of fair play to indulge me a bit longer as I flesh out an argument: Nomo should do more than just do his job and get paid. SS has already posted a poignant reply, and I've had a chat with others who disagree with me. Thanks. Points I've heard thus far: a) Nomo is not unusual for an immigrant (if he actually qualifies as one) in lack of language ability, b) he doesn't need English to do his work (nor does a sumo wrestler need Japanese, but tell that to the Sumo Kyoukai), c) he's a sportsman, not a diplomat (but sportspeople have great leverage in societyeven more so than diplomats), d) assimilation isn't for everyone it's stressful, it might take his mind off the game, etc., so different strokes (fair enough), and e) he's just "an ordinary guy" (as "ordinary" as Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, and other groundbreakers) who's earned the trappings of success through hard work and true talent. So why get all moralistic and begrudge him?

Home Tokyo Guide Travel Culture ... Next Hideo Nomo - Japanese Baseball Player Hideo Nomo is a right-handed pitcher who has achieved success both in Japan and the United States. Nomo was on the silver medal winning Japanese baseball team at the 1988 Olympics, and the Kinsetsu Buffaloes drafted him in 1989. Nomo debuted with them in 1990 and was an immediate success, going 18-8 but more impressively striking out 287 hitters in just 235 IP's. The strikeout numbers are attributed to his unorthodox wind-up, where he turns his back to the hitter, raises his pivot leg, and freezes for a second before throwing. The windup gave him the nickname "Tornado". In his first 4 seasons, Nomo was as consistent, and consistently good, as any pitcher in Japanese baseball, winning 17 or 18 games each year. His 5th season in 1994 was marred by a shoulder injury and only netted him 8 wins. Nomo was becoming one of the most popular baseball players in Japan but after the '94 season, Nomo got into a contract dispute with team management. This lead to Hideo heading stateside, where in February of 1995, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed him to a contract. After a month in the minors, necessitated by a season shortened by a player's strike, he became the first Japanese-born Japanese Leaguer to appear in a major league game on May 2nd. The pressure on him would be tremendous, and Japanese media and fans appeared in large numbers in games he started. Nomo's games were regularly broadcast live to Japan, despite the fact most people would be waking up when he started games. Nomo more than lived up to their expectations.

Nomo gets Yanked off scrap heap Hideki Matsui remembers Hideo Nomo's heyday, when the righthander was considered a trail blazer and the world of Japanese baseball stopped each time Nomo took the mound for the Dodgers, though it was half a world away. "I know how well he pitched in his prime," Matsui said yesterday through a translator. "If he can bring that and pitch that effectively, he can be a huge plus." The Yankees would settle for much less, especially given the shaky state of their starting rotation. But they are hopeful, and that's why they signed Nomo, 36, who was released by the worst team in baseball, to a minor-league contract yesterday and shipped him to Triple-A Columbus. Heck, they've gotten some innings out of another reject, Al Leiter, who started last night against the Twins. Though the Yankees still haven't announced a starter for Saturday, Nomo needs work in the minors; he hasn't pitched since July 15, his last outing before the Devil Rays released him. GM Brian Cashman said Yankee officials will meet with Nomo to determine his time frame to pitch in the majors. Meanwhile, Cashman said he was continuing to probe the trade market, though he said it was "no different than I've been saying for the last couple of days."

Nomo fails first minor test in a major way BY ANTHONY McCARRON
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Hideo Nomo allowed three hits, four walks and two runs in two innings last night as he started his career in the Yankee organization with Triple-A Columbus. Nomo will have to pitch a lot better if he hopes to join the Yankees this season, because he's not guaranteed a spot in their fractured rotation, GM Brian Cashman said. Nomo, trying to prove he can still pitch after his release in mid-July by the Devil Rays, signed a minor-league contract with the Yanks last week. Cashman gauged Nomo's chances of making the Yankees like this: "He's got to pitch well and we've got to have a need. "There were no promises or warranties made." With the way things have gone for Yankee starters this season - four of them are on the disabled list - it seems likely that Nomo would at least have a chance. Cashman has always admired the righthander, though he's never met him. "Anybody who appreciates the game of baseball appreciates Hideo Nomo and all he's accomplished," Cashman said.

FOSTERING BASEBALL TALENT
Major League Star Nomo Founds Amateur Team (July 28, 2003)
Dodgers pitcher Hideo Nomo (Jiji) Major League pitcher Nomo Hideo, 34, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has founded an amateur baseball team in Japan called Nomo Baseball Club. With the amount of support provided by companies to thier corporate teams dwindling, amateur and semipro players face an increasingly tough situation. Hoping to give these players some encouragement, Nomo supplied the funds for the new team himself in what could be described as a gesture of putting something back into the world of baseball. This is yet another new challenge for the pioneer who led the recent migration of Japanese players to the Major Leagues. New Team Based in Nomo's Hometown
The Nomo Baseball Club is based in Nomo's hometown of Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture, where, after graduating from high school, Nomo himself spent three years playing for a corporate team, Nippon Steel Corporation Sakai Works. The world of corporate and amateur baseball has seen a dramatic fall in the number of teams in recent years, as some companies have disbanded their teams as part of their restructuring efforts. While there were once 237 teams, by 2002 this number had fallen to 85. Even Nomo's former team, Nippon Steel Sakai, was forced to suspend activities in 1994. Seeing how young players were losing opportunities to enjoy and improve their baseball, Nomo established a team to give some of them back these chances.

    GOLDSEA
ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES IS BYUNG-HYUN KIM ANOTHER HIDEO NOMO? nly an Arizona Diamondbacks rally in the 9th inning of Game 7 spared Byung-Hyun Kim the ignominy of being labeled the first Asian pitcher ever to cost his team the World Series. It was a nightmare season finish for a 22-year-old prodigy who had begun his major league career so brilliantly less than two years earlier.
In college Kim was Number 1 on the Corean National team, even ahead of Chanho Park, four years his senior. Signed by the Diamondbacks in the spring of 1999, Kim outperformed for two farm teams before being called up in May 2000 to pitch relief. A rising fastball served up via an unnerving, nearly underarm motion quickly earned him the rap of being tough to hit. He racked up 111 kills in 70.2 innings while giving up only 52 runs. And he was all of 21.
By mid-2000 there was even talk of a slot on the All-Star team. The talk stopped in July when he was sent down to Tucson. Kim returned two weeks later to show enough improvement to become the top contender for the closer job. By season's end he made it known to a skeptical Bob Brenly that he was ready to start.
The 2001 season magnified Kim's promise and problems. His 93-mph underarm fastball could retire batters like clockwork except when he threw too many balls, took too long to unload pitches, didn't challenge the batters enough. After a rocky spring and an impressive summer Kim hit the skids in September by giving up a series of crucial homers. Brenly kept the faith into the World Series with nearly disastrous consequences.
