Hi CJ,
I'm a big Tigers fan and like your site a lot. Quick question for you: Do you think 25 is too old to think about a pro baseball career? I've come to the game late, but I'm tearing up the slow-pitch league I play in (hitting .376!). What do you think? Thanks,
-Shane
(reply) If you are in slow pitch it is probably too late. If you can make solid contact on a 90 mph fastball an 85 mph slider and a 80 mph curveball then you may have a chance. Good luck, CJ posted by naedoo : 11:25 PM ( 0 comments

Save for a Rainy Day
C.J. Nitkowski picks up a save that's one for the record books. Pete Cava
Minor League News for a rainy day. Thanks to a bit of scoring magic, he now knows how effortless it can be to save on a rainy day. The Indians took a one-run lead into the top of the eighth. Indianapolis starter Zach Duke was warming up for the inningwhen public address announcer Bruce Schumacher advised the crowd of 7,454 that a rainstorm was heading for downtown Indianapolis. The wind gusted around Victory Field. Duke retired the first two Norfolk batters, Angel Pagan and Chris Basak. By then he had thrown 101 pitches, one over his limit. Manager Trent Jewell brought in Joe Roa to face Luis Garcia.
Garcia stroked a two-out single to left. Moments later the storm broke sending fans scrambling for shelter. Jewell again strode to the mound. This time, he summoned Nitkowski to face Brian Daubach.
The rains reached monsoon proportions while Nitkowski took his warm-up tosses. Home plate umpire Brent Persinger halted the contest. Fifty minutes later, with the rain still falling, the game was called. Indianapolis got credit for a rain-shortened 2-1 victory and Duke got the win.
The 32-year-old Nitkowski, has seen major league service with the Reds, Tigers, Astros, Mets, Rangers, Braves and Yankees. He agreed that the scoring decision was unique.

April 22, 2004 The Promised Land
Perseverance pays off for former FAU pitchers By Kevin Cooney Kevin Cooney is entering his 17 th season as head coach at Florida Atlantic University and 21 st overall. Each week, he’ll share some of the highs and lows of running a college baseball program - one that continues to grow as a national power. Cooney, who starred as a pitcher before taking Montclair State to a Division III national title, has guided the Blue Wave to a 226-89 record and four NCAA Regionals the past five years. His 1999 squad won 34 straight games, tying the NCAA mark set by Texas in 1977.

The Promised Land.
That's the title of a great Springsteen song. It's also a lyric that he's used in more than one song, the one place that we all have in our hearts and do our best to try and reach.
Bruce didn't coin the phrase. I think it was the product of some other writer from a long time ago who knew a guy named Moses leading his people in search of a better life.
In my world, The Promised Land is usually thought of as three places - Omaha, the minor leagues and the big leagues. As I have gotten older and hopefully wiser, things that have happened in my life showed me that there are destinations far more important. But as the coach of young college baseball players, I understand what drives them.

He looks like he could have a role. He has decent numbers and has some ML experience. He has even started, albeit without a lot of success. "Several months ago I wrote an article in Next-Wave that talked about evangelism and communicating to an increasingly net-literate lifestyle. Since then I downloaded a plethora of e-mail soliciting my opinion on their local church website. Many of those local church sites got posted on jordoncooper.com. Recently I took time to review the list and two things caught my attention. Almost all of them are very well designed but I never found myself being drawn back to check them out very often. As I was thinking about this I started to go through my bookmarks and took another look at the sites that I go back to all the time. I started to look for the characteristics that kept drawing me back. As I was formulating what was surely going to be a best selling epic book, I picked up the now legendary book, The Cluetrain Manifesto . I got no further than the first paragraph of the introduction to see that my best-selling book had already been written (doh) and I had my answer for what drew me back to the web. The authors pose this question

Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.

Thursday notes
* I don’t think this is a great deal for the Nationals, but at least they’ll be on TV . But the idea of one-network-two-teams isn’t going to be good long-term. Note: Often the two teams will be playing at the same time. Hmmm… I wonder who will actually be televised then? The answer, at least to Nationals fans, isn’t a good one. * It was just the other day when Juan Gonzalez was anointed a starter in Cleveland’s outfield. People got excited. It’s hard not to. Gonzales used to be an extremely proficient hitter. But that was a long time ago. Fact is, he “ has missed 301 of a possible 486 games the past three seasons…” Today, he was placed on the DL. He will not be starting for the Indians. At least not yet. It’s official : There is a designer for the new stadium in Washington. Good news. But what I’m really waiting for is to see who gets the contract to clean up the water that the new stadium will sit next to.

It's Friday: Time for notes * It’s true: A game was called yesterday due to bees. Being that the game was in Arizona, you had to worry about those bees being of the killer variety. * When the Twins signed Mike Redmond as a backup catcher, you would have assumed his position was safe. Not so anymore. Twins prospect Corky Miller has had a nice spring. Miller is out of options – so the Twins would rather not lose him by trying to send him down. Because the Twins have Matt LeCroy as a catcher safety-net (which is really what Redmond is) it may mean that Miller will overtake Redmond and make this team. * With Scott Baker being sent down, it virtually assures C.J. Nitkowski a spot in the Twins bullpen. Nitkowski hasn’t allowed a run this spring.
