Naehring: Team's 'more well-rounded' than in the past
    By BRIAN BENNETT

    The Courier-Journal
SARASOTA, Fla. — In the first four seasons of their affiliation with the Cincinnati Reds, the Louisville Bats have contended for the International League West Division title each year, making the playoffs twice and winning the Governors' Cup trophy in 2001.
So it's noteworthy when Reds farm director Tim Naehring says the Bats will break camp this afternoon and head north with what could be the best Triple-A team Cincinnati has assembled in Louisville.
"We've been very lucky how our guys have played the past four years at the Triple-A level," he said. "All in all, I think this will be a more well-rounded club than we've had in the past."

Main July 29, 2003 Naehring In Line? Read David Duncan writes in response to this post . He starts by quoting the post.:
"As a Red's fan, I say good riddance. Unfortunately, I doubt that the penny-pinching owners are going to bring in anyone dramatically different. They'll find someone who can manage the bottom line, not someone who understands building an organization." Big Fan of the site and big Red Sox fan. I disagree this Reds fan. The Reds have an excellent choice to replace Bowden, Tim Naehring. I believe he is in charge of player development or something similar. Very well respected and thought of highly. In the mold of the good up and coming young GM prospects. Easy choice for the Reds to make. Mistake if they don't promote Naehring.
Naehring is indeed in charge of player development. Unfortunately, I can't find much about him in this role on the internet. Here's an article from the start of the 2002 season about how Naehring is putting prospects in AAA rather than keeping them in AA
Most Triple-A teams aren't home to loads of young talent. Many organizations prefer to groom their prospects at Double-A while keeping their Triple-A club stocked with journeymen. ''It's the equivalent of guys in the NBA who sign 10-day contracts because of injuries,'' said Jim Callis, executive editor of Baseball America. ''That's where you see 30-year-old veterans, incase-of-emergency guys. A lot of teams aren't as hesitant anymore to bring up young guys straight from Double-A.''

Baseball Musings July 31, 2003 New Bullpen Kudos to the Cincinnati Reds bullpen. Although they've lost a number of players in trades this week, Ryan Wagner and John Riedling combined for three no-hit innings to give the Reds a win in 10 innings. They struck out two and walked one, and 19 of their 30 pitches went for strikes. The Rockies also had a fine bullpen performance, going 4 2/3, but unfortunately allowing the winning run in 10th. Posted by StatsGuru at 10:19 PM Games TrackBack (0) Pitch Count Pedro Martinez has thrown over 100 pitches, and the Rangers are getting to him. They've scored 2 in the 6th to take a 3-2 lead over the perennial Cy Young candidate. Pedro can use some of that vaunted Red Sox offense tonight. Colby Lewis has struck out six through six, and he's only walked two. He's thrown 67 of 104 pitches for strikes, and doesn't look like a guy with a 7+ ERA. Posted by StatsGuru at 10:01 PM Games TrackBack (0) Polanco Not Placid Placido Polanco is finishing up a great July in style. He comes into tonight with 23 runs and 15 RBI in 24 games in July, a .444 OBA and a .583 slugging percentage. He's hit a HR in three AB to add another run scored and three more RBI. Posted by StatsGuru at 09:29 PM Players TrackBack (0) Powerful Lee Carlos Lee has two HR tonight, solo shots that account for both runs in the 2-2 White Sox/Royals game. Over his previous 13 games, Lee has hit .310, with 10 of his 18 hits being for extra bases, including six HR. He's slugging .690 in those games, and the White Sox record is 11-2. Interestingly, he's only had 1 walk and 2 SF, so his OBA is only one point higher than his BA. With the two HR tonight, he has 18 RBI in his last 14 games.

Pitchers are looking up: but the ball stays in the park
With April nearly behind us, and a surprisingly low number of shower-outs (but one roof-out), we can submit to our first review of developments in this 1998 baseball season. Remember the predictions of January and February ? I said home runs would be down, not up, and young pitchers would be good, not lousy, this season. The reasoning is there for you to review. With about 1/8 of the games played, how does my neck out on the limb look, compared with the bobbing heads of the "Expansion will bring a new offensive explosion" yeah-sayers? Through April 19, 1998: Total major league home runs Total runs scored Total games played Home runs per game '98 Runs per game '98 Home runs per game, '97 Runs per game, '97 Home runs per game, '96 Runs per game, '96 So, expansion will bring a deluge of home runs? So far, homers per game are way behind the pace of last year, as well as that of 1996, 1995, and 1994. Runs per game, on the other hand, are up slightly from last year, although well behind the 1996 pace. These twin trends are exemplified by the Yankees home opener with Oakland, in which the 17-13 score included only one home run. Are there more walks? Are hitters getting more doubles? Are poor fielders creating more unearned runs? I haven't yet investigated the answer, and it may well change as the season goes on. But to date, expansion has

What is the N.Y.C.B.L.? T he New York Collegiate Baseball League is a twelve team summer league played throughout upstate New York. In addition to Amsterdam, the NYCBL consists of teams located in Alfred, Wellsville, Watertown, Geneva, Hornell, Utica, Newark, Rochester, Glens Falls, Saratoga and Plattsburgh. Split into two divisions, an Eastern and a Western, the NYCBL is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball. The league is one of the elite wood bat summer leagues that is sponsored by Major League Baseball. To be eligible to play in the NYCBL, a player must have completed at least one year of college and must still have at least one year of playing eligibility remaining. He must also be enrolled full-time at a college or university. Beginning in early June, each team in the league will play a 47 game schedule, which will wind down at the end of July. T T he league itself has had hundreds of former players go on to play professional baseball including a few stars of today’s game. Tim Hudson of the Oakland Athletics, Brad Lidge of the Houston Astros, Steve Kline of the St. Louis Cardinals, Tim Naehring of the Boston Red Sox, Scott Saurbeck of the Boston Red Sox, Clay Bellinger of the New York Yankees, Terry Tiffey of the Minnesota Twins, Matt Stairs of the San Diego Padres, and the Toronto Blue Jays current starting shortstop John McDonald are all alumni of the league.
