Baseball Fever National League St. Louis Cardinals PDA View Full Version : Stan Musial - A Real Man 01-21-2003, 11:38 AM I was a Brooklyn Dodgers Fan when Stan Musial played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Although he hurt the Dodgers many times I always liked him as a Baseball player. There are not too many Players who would do this:
43 YEARS AGO TODAY (January 21, 1960):
Stan Musial asks for, and receives, a pay cut from $100,000 to $80,000 a year. Musial says he was overpaid in 1957 and 1958, and his salary should be cut, based on his performance in 1959.
No doubt, Stan "The Man" Musial was a great player and a great human being. The Cardinals had a great player in Musial for many years and for those who saw him play over the years, it must have been very special.
I tip my Cap to Stan "the Man" Musial. The Commissioner 01-21-2003, 07:35 PM Wow, I've never heard that story before! It's a shame that the Cards weren't gracious enough to reject his request. 02-20-2003, 08:32 AM When Al Kaline was offered $100,000 , he was going to turn them down because he didn't think he deserved the money.

Name: Stan Musial Variant Name: Stanley Frank Musial Birth Date: December 21, 1920 Place of Birth: Donora, Pennsylvania, United States of America Nationality: American Gender: Male Occupations: baseball player Stan Musial Main Biography Stan Musial (born 1920), one of baseball's greatest hitters, enjoyed an extraordinary career with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1941 through 1963. Called "Stan the Man" because of his intimidating presence at the plate, Musial won seven batting championships and three Most Valuable Player awards. Accommodating to fans and the media both during and after his playing career, Musial was considered one of the game's most gentlemanly and down-to-earth ambassadors. He came from rural Pennsylvania, never graduated from high school, and sometimes stammered in public. His love for baseball overcame all obstacles, however, and he became known nationwide as a symbol of batting excellence. "I was a poor boy who struck it rich in many ways through the wonders of baseball," Musial said in his autobiography. Meteoric Rise The Cardinals' greatest player was born Stanislaus Musial in Donora, a mill town in southwestern Pennsylvania's Monongahela Valley on December 21, 1920. His father, L.....

In July 1963, the members of the Academy of Sports Editors cast their ballots on behalf of the ballplayers they considered the best of all time. Stan Musial, then in his final season, was the only active player to finish in the top ten on the resultant list. He landed above a number of all-time greats, including the likes of Christy Mathewson, Lou Gehrig, and, perhaps most notably, Ted Williams. Today it would be difficult to find many people outside St. Louis who rank Musial ahead of Williams. Musial's excellent but unspectacular play, career-long avoidance of controversy, and longtime residence in one of the lowest profile of major league cities seem to have resulted in widespread underestimation of his achievements on the playing field. In order to rectify this, two longtime Missouri residents set out to recount the Musial story in the early 1990s. The first one to complete his manuscript was Jerry Lansche, whose

    STAN MUSIAL
    Baseball's "Stan the Man"
They don't keep statistics on what kind of human being you are, but if they did Stan Musial would rank near the top. In 1946 he was offered $50,000 to jump to the new Mexican League. Though he was making only $13,000 he never considered the offer, because he would be breaking his word to the St. Louis fans. Although he was a baseball superstar his whole career, he never asked for special treatment. He always acted like just another member of the team, and expected to be treated like a regular player, never like a star. And if you ever needed a favor, he was happy to help. But he was a superstar. Stanislaus Musial was the son of immigrants. His father, Lukasz, worked in the local zinc mine and wanted his son to have an education and better himself. Determined to be a baseball player, Stan was a 19 year old playing for the Donora Zincs when he was first signed by the St. Louis organization, and he would never play for another organization. He started out as a pitcher in the Minor Leagues, but his good hitting caused him to play in the outfield between starts. When he hurt his shoulder and couldn't throw his fastball any more, he was going to quit baseball. That's when his manager, Dickie Kerr, stepped in and convinced Musial that he could be a good hitter at the Major League level. And was he right! In 2 years he was called up to the

    Born to Be a Ballplayer
    by Jerry Lansche
published by Taylor Publishing Company, Dallas, Texas Here stands baseball's perfect warrior. Here stands baseball's perfect knight.
Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick How good was Stan Musial? He was good enough to take your breath away.
    Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully
Branch Rickey, quoted in the October 12, 1963, issue of The Sporting News, said, "That preliminary move Stanley uses at the plate is a fraud. When the ball leaves the pitcher's hand, that is the time you take a picture of a batsman to determine the correctness of his form. Now the ball has been pitched and Stanley takes his true position. He is no longer in a crouch and his bat is full back and so steady a coin wouldn't fall off the end of it. Then the proper stride and the level swing. There is no hitch. He is ideal in form as well as courage." Hundreds of National and American League hurlers from 1941 through 1963 would attest to the truth of Rickey's description. Hundreds of them stood on the mound, looking in at Stan Musial, many thinking, wrongly, that no batter who looked that silly at the plate could possibly hit the ball. Rogr Kahn, writing in 1957, echoed Rickey's opinion. "He stands there," said Kahn, "stooped but graceful, stirring his bat in a low and languid arc. Then in an instant before the pitcher throws the ball, Musial cocks the bat and crouching severely, twists away from his adversary to that he is staring out of the corners of his eyes. Curled, poised, waiting, Musial is suddenly a cobra coiled for a deadly strike. Even now no one professes to know how to pitch to him. No one likes to try. His bat has shattered each theory as quickly as it was put to test.

Life Stanislaus Musial was born on 21 November, 1920 in Donora, Pennsylvania, 28 miles south of Pittsburg. His father, Lukasz Musial, was a polish immigrant born in Warsaw and his mother, Mary Lancos, was the daughter of Czech immigrants. Donora was a blue-collar town, and most of its young men were destined to work in one of the many steel mills or coal mines in western Pennsylvania. But Stashu was determined to play baseball.

Musial: From Stash to Stan the Man is the most comprehensive assessment of baseball legend Stan Musial's life and career to date. Musial, better known as Stan the Man, was born in 1920 to a Polish immigrant father and a second-generation Slovak mother in Donora, Pennsylvania. As a youth, however, he went by the nickname Stash, which his closest friends have continued to call him. In this first scholarly biography of Musial, James N. Giglio places the St. Louis Cardinal star within the context of the timesthe Great Depression and wartime and postwar Americaand the issues then prevalent in professional baseball, particularly race and the changing economics of the game. Giglio illuminates how the times shaped Musial and delves further into his popular image as a warm, unfailingly gracious role model known for good sportsmanship and devotion to family. One of America's most popular professional athletes, Musial began his baseball career in 1938 as a minor-league pitcher, switching to the outfield after he injured his arm. He began playing for the Cardinals in 1941, and in his twenty-two-year career with them (1941 to 1963, with an interruption for military service during World War II), he established himself as one of the game's greatest hitters, with a lifetime batting average of .331. He held major- league records for extra-base hits and total bases. He also held National League records for games played, consecutive games played, times at bat, runs scored, runs batted in, and hits. Musial retired from the playing field in 1963, but returned as general manager of the Cardinals in 1967, a year in which his team won the World Series. In 1969, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
