Buy Posters at AllPosters.com After only "seeing" Stan "the Man" Musial over KMOX radio via Harry Caray's vivid descriptions, I finally got to see Stan live in Sportsman's Park in the mid 1950's. ( Stan was the one player that you never heard Harry criticize over the radio ) One of my biggest baseball thrills was watching Stan take batting practice. I've been able to see a number of great hitters practice over the years Willie Mays Hank Aaron Ken Griffey Jr. Tony Gwynn , and even Mark McGwire in 1998 and 1999 but Stan was the best! (Though both Barry Bonds and Albert Pujols are making strong cases) Stan consistently smacked line drives and connected with the sweet spot in batting practice; at least, I sure don't remember him topping any or popping any up, and this was in the "twilight" of his career. A member of world championship teams in , and , no other Cardinal holds as many records as Stannot even close. Fortunately, major league baseball had the foresight to have a special panel vote in 5 more players after the fan vote for the

Career Hitting Record Other Resources As a boy, the left-handed Musial dreamed of becoming a major-league pitcher. He signed his first professional contract with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1938 and pitched in the minor leagues, occasionally playing in the outfield, until he injured his left arm late in the 1940 season. Moved permanently to the outfield, he came up to the Cardinals late in the 1941 season and batted .426 in 12 games. The following year, he became the team's starting left fielder and hit .315. It was the first of 16 consecutive seasons in which he hit over .300. Musial led the league in 1943 with a .357 average, 220 hits, 48 doubles, 20 triples, and a .562 slugging percentage to win the NL's most valuable player award. He was the league leader with 197 hits, 51 doubles, and a .549 slugging percentage in 1944, when he batted .347. After serving in the Navy in 1945, Musial returned to the Cardinals to win another batting title with a .365 average. He also led with 124 runs, 228 hits, 50 doubles, 20 triples, and a .587 slugging percentage to win his second MVP award. In 1948, Musial changed to an odd "peek-a-boo" batting stance, with his back almost to the pitcher and his bat held straight up. It increased his power without hurting his average. Musial's previous home run high was 19 in 1947; from 1948 through 1955, he hit 30 or more home runs six times.

Chat wrap: Bob Costas on Stan Musial

Musial was gentleman killer
By Larry Schwartz
Special to ESPN.com
"He didn't hit a homer in his last at-bat; he hit a single. He didn't hit in 56 straight games. He married his high school sweetheart and stayed married to her, never married a Marilyn Monroe. He didn't play with the sheer joy and style that goes alongside Willie Mays' name. None of those easy things are there to associate with Stan Musial. All Musial represents is more than two decades of sustained excellence and complete decency as a human being," says Bob Costas on ESPN's SportsCentury series. About half a century before Mark McGwire became The Man, there was another prominent St. Louis Cardinal who was called "The Man" almost like it was part of his name. As in Stan the Man. Stan Musial had 3,630 hits during his 22-year career. Stan Musial was accorded the nickname in Brooklyn, by a Flatbush faithful. As Musial strode to the plate at Ebbets Field in 1946, a fan lamented, "Uh, oh. Here comes the man again; here comes the man." Stan the Man didn't just terrorize Dodgers pitchers; he battered just about all National League moundsmen. "He'd kill you," Boston Braves pitcher Johnny Sain said, "but he was a gentleman."

Stan Musial played in a record 24 All-Star Games and hit .330 as a 41-year-old grandfather. Stan Musial was accorded the nickname in Brooklyn, by a Flatbush faithful. As Musial strode to the plate at Ebbets Field, a fan lamented, "Uh, oh. Here comes the man again; here comes the man." Stan the Man didn't just terrorize Dodgers pitchers; he battered just about all National League moundsmen. "He'd kill you," Boston Braves pitcher Johnny Sain said, "but he was a gentleman." A lefthanded hitter who stood 5-10 and weighed 175 pounds, the gentlemanly Musial batted in an unusual crouch, with his No. 6 turned almost squarely to the pitcher. Moving his hips to stay loose and with his left leg bent to support his weight as he strode to follow the pitch, Musial uncoiled like a rattlesnake, cracking line drives to all fields. "I started to crouch because that way I could guard the plate better, and I always wanted to hit .300 in the big leagues," he said.
