TOPPS Baseball Cards
In 1952, Topps came out with the largest baseball card set of the time. There were a total of 407 cards to the set. The set was issued in two series. The first series were numbered 1-310 and the second series were numbered 311-407. ( Series and Prints (Checklist) Developed by Sy Berger , the Topps 1952 set was made up of the first " modern baseball card, " complete with player image, team logo, vital statistics, and a full playing record. The cards measured 2 5/8 in. x 3 3/4 in. and featured colorized black and white photos of the players. Although Berk Ross came out with a 1952 Joe DiMaggio card, Joe had announced his retirement prior to the start of production on the 1952 Topps cards, so he is not included in the 1952 Topps set. Roy Campanella ( card # 314 ), Pee Wee Reese ( card # 333 ), Hoyt Wilhelm ( card # 392 ), Bill Dickey ( card # 400 ). Because of other contractural obligations, two of the biggest names in baseball are missing from the set, Ted Williams and Stan Musial.

is the only member of the 3,000-Hit Club to reach the mark with a pinch hit. On May 13, 1958, with Musial at hit #2,999, the Cardinals decided to sit "The Man" from the final game of a series in Chicago so that he could make history at Busch Stadium (formerly Sportsman's Park). But with the Cards trailing 3-1 in the sixth, St. Louis manager Fred Hutchinson opted to bat Musial for weak-hitting Redbird pitcher Sam Jones. Musial came through with a double to left, sparking a rally that would push the Cardinals to victory. The 37-year-old Musial finished the 1958 season with a .337 batting average—third best in the National League and "sandwiched" between the next two members of the Club: Willie Mays (.347) and Hank Aaron (.326). Baseball Almanac "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." - Stan Musial B aseball Almanac is pleased to present an unprecedented collection of baseball related quotations spoken by Stan Musial and about Stan Musial. Stan Musial Quotations From Stan Musial "I consciously memorized the speed at which every pitcher in the league threw his fastball, curve, and slider; then, I'd pick up the speed of the ball in the first thirty feet of its flight and knew how it would move once it had crossed the plate." "I have a darn good job, but please don't ask me what I do." "I love to play this game of baseball - I love putting on this uniform." "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion. I now know how (Charles) Lindbergh must have felt when he returned from St. Louis." "The first principle of contract negotiations is don't remind them of what you did in the past - tell them what you're going to do in the future."
