An embodiment of the All-American athlete, Dale Murphy was a shining star for Atlanta clubs, both pennant contenders and cellar-dwellers. Murphy was actually signed by the Braves as a catcher. His arm was so erratic that he had trouble throwing the ball back to the pitcher. Equally unsettled offensively, he led the NL in strikeouts in 1978 (145) and 1980 (133). The Mormon was Atlanta's starting first baseman in 1978 and shared the position with Bob Horner in 1979. When the Braves traded Barry Bonnell for

BOSTON BRAVES
The Braves have the distinction of being the longest active franchise in baseball, tracing their roots back to the Boston Red Caps, a National League team created in 1876. Over the next thirty-seven years, the team was also known as the Beaneaters, the Doves, and the Rustlers, before settling on the Braves in 1912. The Beaneaters dominated the National League in the 1890's, winning four pennants. Many of their stars bolted to the upstart American League in 1901, leaving Boston with a team so bad and out of contention it boggles the mind. During the ten seasons from 1903-1912, the Braves finished 32, 51, 54, 66, 47, 36, 55, 50, 54 and 52 games out of first place. They made a modest move to fifth the next year, setting the stage for the 1914 "Miracle Braves" — an incredible chapter in baseball lore. Mired in last place on July 18, 1914, the Braves suddenly went on a winning binge, led by sparkplug shortstop Rabbit Maranville. They won thirty-four of forty-four games, climbing over every team in the league, finally surpassing the first place Giants on September 8. When the season ended, the Braves had put ten games between themselves and second place New York. They capped off their "Miracle" season with a four game sweep of the heavily favored Philadelphia Athletics.

Career Batting Record Other Resources Nolan Ryan once said of Murphy, "I can't imagine that Joe DiMaggio was a better all-around player than Dale." The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Murphy was with the NL's Atlanta Braves as a catcher for brief periods in 1976 and 1977. He became a regular first baseman in 1978 and was moved to center field because of his speed in 1980. Murphy was named the league's most valuable player in 1982, when he batted .281 with 36 home runs, 113 runs scored, and a league-leading 109 RBI. He led the league in RBI again, with 121, and in slugging with a .540 percentage in 1983 to win the MVP award again. Murphy hit .302 that season with 36 home runs, 131 runs scored, and a career high 30 stolen bases. In 1984 and 1985, Murphy won titles with 36 and 37 home runs, respectively. He also led the league in slugging with a .547 percentage in 1984, in runs with 118 and walks with 90 in 1985. Murphy's best home run year was 1987, when he hit 44 but failed to lead the league. During the 1990 season, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. After missing most of the 1992 season with an injury, he was traded to the expansion Colorado Rockies. He retired on May 27, 1993.
