The Chico Gaijin 10-08-2004, 06:09 AM Hey Marniers fans,
I heard Paul Molitor was fired as hitting coach. I was wondering because I am a Cubs fan and it looks like the Cubs are looking for a new hitting coach. What was your guys opinon on Paul Molitor as hitting coach in Seatle?
The ChicoIf you go by results, the Mariners had a very anemic year at the plate. The Mariners were last in the AL in Slugging, Runs, Home runs and Rbis, and generally below average in other batting categories. Even with Ichiro, I don't think you can really attribute what he did to Molitor. I read that Molitor tried to get him to be a more rounded hitter, hitting for power more often and such. They even tried batting him 3rd in the lineup for a while. It was not a successful experiment. It seems that Ichiro just has to be himself or it doesn't work. Eventually they told him to just go back to his old ways, and that obviously worked. But no one else on the team had a particularly good year at the plate, and many guys had just really awful years well below their career averages. Perhaps Molitor will be able to do better next time though, because you are supposed to learn more from failure than success. You can compare the team statistics by clicking the following link:

I've heard it said that the best hitting coachs are players who had to struggle at the plate; I wonder how this is going to turn out. How have other great hitters done as hitting coaches? The Commissioner 11-09-2003, 06:28 PM The problem with that question is that it is sometimes difficult to judge the effectiveness of hitting coaches. Generally Charlie Lau is believed to be the greatest hitting coach ever and yet he was only a lifetime .255 batter. On the other hand Eddie Murray is considered to be an excellent hitting coach now and he is a Hall of Famer. The fact that Molitor seemed to get better with age tells me that he was using his head more as he got older and actually learning and processing the game. If he can communicate well enough to impart his wisdom onto a younger generation of players, he may very well prove to be an excellent hitting coach. The Commissioner 11-14-2003, 12:02 AM

Paul Molitor He chose his words the same way he played baseball with sincerity, careful thought and fundamental precision. Everything about Paul Molitor, from his picture-perfect swing to the mistake-free daring with which he ran the bases, was part of a well-conceived master plan. Just wind him up and watch him execute. Molitor's textbook approach and versatile talents served him well over two unusual decades with the Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays and his hometown Minnesota Twins. He played shortstop, second base, third base, center field and designated hitter; he served as leadoff man and run producer; he played in six All-Star Games and two World Series, and he made his mark on the all-time offensive charts with more than 3,300 hits, 600 doubles and a .306 average. Molitor attacked the pitch from a standup righthanded stance and drove the ball with power to all fields. His outstanding speed and aggressive baserunning skills cast him in the role of leadoff man for most of his 15 Milwaukee seasons a role he filled with Rickey Henderson-like results. The only negative was Molitor's inability to stay off the disabled list, an injury jinx that cost him a lot of early-career games.

Discussion : Forget his gambling for a second! Does he merit election to the Hall of Fame based on his statistics? Evaluate evidence suggesting that he does NOT! Bonus : Should he be reinstated into baseball? What would be the repercussions? Why should we care? Devil's Advocate : Rose was not an outstanding fielder and he was NEVER the best hitter on his team! I would rather have his teammate George Foster, who by the way, is not a Hall of Famer. I don't believe that George Foster will make the Hall of Fame, and therefore, NEITHER should Pete Rose, gambling or no gambling! Did You Know: Pete Rose made the most outs in MLB history with 9,797. A distant runner up was Hank Aaron with 8,593. (Hank had a higher lifetime batting average and a few more homers :)
