  • Complete Brett profile Like a fine wine, Paul Molitor seems to get better with age. Weakened early in his career by various injuries, Molitor was turned into a full-time DH in 1990. The shift helped to lengthen a Hall of Fame career. In 1993, he became the oldest man to drive in 100 runs, when at the age of 37 he had 111 RBI for the Toronto Blue Jays. Nicknamed the 'Igniter' for his uncanny ability to instigate a rally, a January 1994 poll of AL managers selected Molitor as the best two-strike hitter in the league. Dubbed 'The Franchise' by adoring Kansas City fans, Brett led the Royals to six AL West titles, two World Series appearances, and their first and only championship. Hitting for average and power, solid on the basepaths, and steady in the field there was very little on the baseball diamond George couldn't do. Brett (whose older brother, Ken, spent 13 years in the majors) retired in 1993 as the all-time club leader in every offensive category excluding stolen bases. However, Brett may be best remembered for two accoutrements: a ubiquitous wad of chew habitually stuffed in one cheek and the fateful pine tar he spread on his bat on

Career Hitting Record Other Resources For years, the 6-foot, 185-pound Molitor was recognized as a very good baseball player. After he was named most valuable player in the 1993 World Series, people suddenly began to think he might well be a future member of the Hall of Fame. The feeling became even stronger when he collected his 3,000th career hit in 1995. And, three years later, when he became just the sixth player in history to have 500 stolen bases and 3,000 hits, the Hall of Fame became a distinct probability. In fact, Molitor was elected to the Hall in 2004, his second year of eligibiltiy Molitor joined the AL's Milwaukee Brewers in 1978 and hit .273 in 125 games, playing second base, third base, and shortstop. After hitting .322 in 1979 and .304 in 1980, he spent much of the 1981 season on the disabled list, but came back to lead the league with 136 runs scored in 1982, when he batted .302. Molitor hit .316 with 2 home runs, 4 runs scored, and 5 RBI when the Brewers beat the California Angels in a five-game league championship series and he had a .355 average with 5 runs and 3 RBI in their seven-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. In Game 1, Molitor became the first player ever to get five hits in a World Series game. In 1983, Molitor settled in at third base for the Brewers and spent most of the next seven seasons at that position. He had his best overall year in 1987, when he hit .353 and led the league with 41 doubles and 114 runs scored.

Paul Molitor's playing career ended with impressive numbers a career average of .306, 235 home runs, 1307 RBI and 3319 hits. He was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 2004. Known mostly for his line-drive hitting ability, Molitor's 3319 career hits include 605 doubles and 114 triples. In 1996, he drove in a career-high 113 run and hit just nine home runs. His career high was 22 home runs in a season coming in 1993 and he never hit more than 20 in any other season of his career. When he debuted with Milwaukee in 1978, he was used mainly at second base. As his career developed, he spent time at shortstop, third, some games at first and even some outfield appearances. However, the one dark spot in his otherwise stellar career came in the form of injuries. A number of assorted injuries cost him some 500 games in his 21-year career. Those injuries led to Molitor being shifted to designated hitter.

Encyclopedia Article Molitor, Paul , born in 1956, American professional baseball player, one of the most consistent hitters in major league history. Molitor collected 3,319 hits during his 21-year career, good for ninth place all time when he retired in 1998. Molitor was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1977 and reached the majors a year later. In his second year with the Brewers Molitor posted a .322 batting average, the first of 12 seasons in which he hit .300 or better. In 1982 Molitor led the American League (AL) in runs and had 201 hits for a .302 average. That year he helped lead Milwaukee to the World Series, where the club lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. In 1987 Molitor again led the AL in runs and hit .352, his best average during his career. He finished second to Wade Boggs (.363) in AL batting, however. Despite his success, Molitor never led the league in batting average or won the league most valuable player (MVP) award.

    Strike Out Cancer
Fewer than 20 percent of people affected by cancer are very aware of newer targeted therapies, and fewer than half have adequate information about support services, according to a recent online survey conducted by The Wellness Community (TWC). In response to the growing needs of the 10 million cancer survivors living in the United States today and the more than 1 million Americans who will be diagnosed this year, The Wellness Community has teamed up with Genentech, a leading developer of targeted therapies, to launch “Strike Out Cancer.” This new education and awareness program is designed to help people affected by cancer seek out information and support and encourage them to learn about new treatments, support networks and educational resources. Baseball Hall of Famer Paul Molitor, who recently lost his father to lung cancer, and former Major League Baseball All-Star and colon cancer survivor, Eric Davis, will lead the launch of the campaign. As part of their commitment to helping people facing cancer, Davis and Molitor will make appearances in 11 cities throughout the country at TWC's free educational workshops, Frankly Speaking About New Discoveries in Cancer . They will share their own personal experiences with people with cancer and their loved ones. To view press release
