1999 Post-Season Review Florida Marlins
By Jon Dunkle

January 7, 2000 This article takes a look at how the Florida Marlins did in the 1999 season relative to preseason expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1999 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews
Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 621 691 Runs allowed 777 852 Run Margin -156 -161 Wins 66 64 Pythagorean wins 63 64 Placement 5th 5th The end result wasn't surprising, but the personnel who did it were. The Marlins finished last in the National League East again despite an almost total revamping of the roster. Only three players originally projected to have 300 at bats with the Marlins last season actually saw that amount of playing time and the pitching staff was also reshuffled. Unfortunately for Marlins fans, the youth movement for 2000 may well be different from that of 1999. The Marlins could start the season with no one on the 25-man roster having reached age 30. General Manager Dave Dombrowski is known for his keen eye for young talent, but many of the youngsters who have been acquired in trades since their 1997 World Championship are still developing in the farm system. And few players who took the field for the major league squad in 1999 stood out as being the type of player a rebuilding franchise would use as a foundation to build around. The Marlins management seems to agree as their leader in wins for the past two seasons, Brian Meadows, has been dealt, along with veteran starter Dennis Springer, starting leftfielder Bruce Aven, and former outfield prospect Todd Dunwoody, among others.

Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson hops over the Brewers' Jeff Cirillo to complete a double play in the eighth inning of the Pirates' 4-2 win at PNC Park Sunday.

Center fielder Tike Redman cuts off a ball in the left-center-field gap, wheels around, throws to shortstop Jack Wilson, who turns and fires a one-bounce strike to catcher David Ross, nailing the runner at home for the third out. Late in the same game, the Brewers have the tying runs on first and second and one out, and Rick White induces a bouncer to second baseman Jose Castillo, who begins a double play to end the threat. These two plays, essential to the Pirates' 4-2 victory Sunday, are the pattern of a very good defensive team. Saying that must shock anyone who saw the first week of the season, when Pirates outfielders seemed allergic to cutoff men and their routes to fly balls were as tentative as a sophomore's approach to the homecoming queen. But this team can field with nearly anyone. Proving that is difficult. Defensive statistics are notoriously subjective, and fielding percentage might be most misleading of all. On the plays mentioned above, for instance, no error would have been recorded if the Pirates failed to get the man at the plate or turn the double play, though either failure might have meant the game.

Rocks pound Salem
STAFF REPORT
WILMINGTON, Del. - The Wilmington Blue Rocks scored 10 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-5 Carolina League victory over the Salem Avalanche on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep. The Avalanche has lost six straight road games. It returns home today. Salem starter Buddy Gallagher (4-4) walked three batters and gave up six hits in two-thirds of an inning, but only two of the 10 runs scored on his watch were earned thanks to an error by second baseman Cristian Berroa. Wilmington (6-4) sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning. Tydus Meadows hit a three-run homer in his second at-bat of inning after walking in his first. Norris Hopper, who went 3-for-6, had two singles in the first. Brian Brantley relieved Gallagher after Meadows' homer cleared the bases with two outs and allowed a single and a walk before getting Chad Santos to strike out to end the parade. Brad Hawpe went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer and an RBI-single to lead Salem. Berroa and Casey Lambert each had two hits for the Avalanche. Lambert and Edmuth Muth each doubled.
