Top 20: Baseball Players Of All Time
By Steve Seepersaud
Entertainment Correspondent - Every 2nd Wednesday
This season, Barry Bonds continues his assault on the Major League Baseball record books, closing in on the career home run title. He's easily one of the best players the game has ever seen. Get any group of fans together at a bar or stadium, and they'll eventually begin arguing the merits of their favorite legends. I've compiled a list of the 20 best players in MLB to ever step onto a field. I considered the player's overall career statistics, special achievements and contributions to the game as a whole. All the people on this list are either current Hall of Famers or certain to have a bust in Cooperstown, New York in the future. Hopefully, this will be a conversation piece over the Internet or at your favorite watering hole. Let the games begin. Number 20
Jackie Robinson (1947-1956)
Position:
Second Baseman
Greatest Moment: Stepping onto a major league field for the first time on April 15, 1947.

Topping last season will be a tall order, both for USC and the sport at-large. In 1998, baseball, previously wheezing from a debilitating strike in 1994, was fully resuscitated. The game enjoyed a glorious renaissance.

Consider the following:

The president of the Czech Republic mentioned McGwire in a visit to the White House.
ABC News did a prime-time special about him.
The prime minister of Japan wrote him a fan letter.
And, maybe most telling of all, he was invited to be guest host on the Cartoon Network. Yet, at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, McGwire is a modest and gentle giant. He confesses to crying at movies like Driving Miss Daisy and laughing at bad jokes. He excels in the community service arena, donating his time and 10 percent of his salary to his foundation for abused children.

Fate then stepped in, in the form of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska Summer League. Responding to a request to fill a last-minute roster opening on the Glacier Pilots, Vaughn suggested McGwire. Young man McGwire duly went north, but the move seemed to go south for him emotionally.
McGwire decided to stick out the Anchorage summer. He gradually came to like taking his hacks so much that when he returned to USC in the fall, he actually wanted to hit. He slammed 19 home runs as a sophomore, setting a Trojan record. The day he broke it, McGwire told his hometown newspaper his favorite player was Kingman.

"Big Mac" started his career with a bang in 1987 by shattering the single-season record for home runs by a rookie with 49, leading to the 1997 Rookie of the Year award. In his 16-year career, McGwire finished with at least 30 round-trippers 11 seasons, including 4 seasons with more than 50. In 1998, McGwire broke Roger Maris' 37-year old record for home runs in a single season by clearing the fence 70 times, a mark which only stood for 3 years. He was selected to 12 All-Star teams, finished in the Top 10 in MVP voting 5 times, and led his league in home runs 4 times. McGwire retired 17 home runs shy of 600 career shots, fifth on the career list, and is considered by many to be the greatest power hitter of all time.

ark McGwire was born two years to the day after Maris hit his 61st home run in 1961. On September 8, 1998, two days before what would have been Maris' 64th birthday, Mark McGwire hit his 62nd home run of the 1998 season. The powerful line-drive that just passed over the left field wall at Busch Memorial Stadium was not the typical Big Mac bomb, but his exuberance and show of respect in surpassing Maris' record was vintage McGwire. Following his jubilant trot around the base paths, Mark hugged his son, his teammates, and fellow slugger Sammy Sosa. But McGwire saved his most emotional embraces for Roger Maris' children, five of whom were in attendance at the ballpark to watch their father's record fall. McGwire and Sosa's battle for the home run crown continued over the final weeks of the season. It was not until Big Mac bombed an astounding five home runs in the Cardinals' final series of the year, that he broke away from Sosa and boldly wrote an imposing new figure in baseball's record books: 70 home runs in a single season.

WASHINGTON (CNN) Former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire refused to answer questions about steroid use during his playing career at a congressional hearing Thursday, repeatedly telling a House committee he was "not here to talk about the past." McGwire, who broke Roger Maris' single-season record for home runs in 1998, was among a panel of current and former all-stars who appeared before the House Government Reform Committee to discuss the use of steroids in the majors.

Posted: Wednesday September 09, 1998 02:56 AM AP ATLANTA (CNN/SI) He did it. With his 62nd home run, Mark McGwire brought an end to the expectations, the hype and the single-season home run record set by Roger Maris 37 years ago. With 18 games to spare, McGwire broke baseball's most glamorous record on Tuesday, finally putting to an end the speculation he inspired when missing the record last season by only three homers despite changing cities and leagues in midseason. McGwire simply lined a laser to left his shortest home run of the season at 341 feet and No. 62 barely cleared the wall. "I have been talking about this since January," he said. "I can honestly say I did it."

I know it's tough. Everybody in baseball knows its tough. I'm just going to give it my best shot.
Mark McGwire

I sort of missed one big thing, to touch first base. I hope I didn't act foolish, but this is history.
Mark McGwire

I study pitchers. I visualize pitches. That gives me a better chance every time I step into the box. That doesn't mean I'm going to get a hit every game, but that's one of the reasons I've come a long way as a hitter.
Mark McGwire
I tell you what, I was so shocked because I didn't think the ball had enough to get out. It's an absolutely incredible feeling. I can honestly say I did it. Mark McGwire I think it puts baseball back on the map as a sport. It's America's pastime and just look at everyone coming out to the ballpark. It has been an exciting year.
