MARK McGWIRE
As a rookie in 1987, Mark McGwire blasted 49 homers, setting a record for freshman. After battling injuries and struggling to find his swing, he burst onto the national stage when he broke Roger Maris's single-season mark for homers in 1998. In the process he rejuvenated his career and opened the way for a spot in the Hall of Fame. Over a four-year stretch in his mid-30s, McGwire clubbed an amazing 245 home runs.

Baseball Almanac "He crushed it. He has the power of three men and I've never faced anybody like him. He's a man among boys." - Paul Wagner B aseball Almanac is pleased to present an unprecedented collection of baseball related quotations spoken by Mark McGwire and about Mark McGwire. Mark McGwire Quotations From Mark McGwire ** 11-12-2001 Retirement Speech START **
"Last January, Mr. (William) DeWitt (St. Louis owner) and I verbally agreed on a generous two-year contract extension from the Cardinal organization. After considerable discussion with those closest to me, I have decided not to sign the extension, as I am unable to perform at a level equal to the salary the organization would be paying me. I believe I owe it to the Cardinals and the fans of St. Louis to step aside, so a talented free agent can be brought in as the final piece of what I expect can be a world championship-caliber team. So I am walking away from the game that has provided me opportunities, experiences, memories and friendships to fill ten lifetimes.

Career Batting Record Other Resources McGwire was named The Sporting News college player of the year in 1984, when he played for the U. S. Olympic team before entering professional baseball. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder was used mostly at third base in the minor leagues and in a brief stint with the Oakland Athletics in 1986, but when he joined Oakland to stay in 1987 he was installed at first base. A very strong right-handed hitter, McGwire was named rookie of the year after leading the league with 49 home runs, a record for a first-year player. He batted .289 and had 118 RBI that year. Over the next four seasons, McGwire hit a total of 126 home runs, but didn't come close to his rookie total. In 1992, though, he had 42 home runs despite a heel injury that limited him to 139 games and 467 at-bats. Because of that injury, recurrent back problems, and the 1994 players' strike, he appeared in just 74 games over the next two seasons. After hitting 39 home runs in only 317 at-bats in 1995, McGwire had his best all-around season as a hitter in 1996 with a .312 average, 52 home runs and 113 RBI, even though he had just 423 times at bat.

Baseball Has A Day of Reckoning In Congress
McGwire Remains Evasive During Steroid Testimony
By Dave Sheinin Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, March 18, 2005; Page A01 On an extraordinary day of words and images, a House committee investigating steroids in baseball forced the sport to confront its past and rethink its future encountering resistance on both counts and the most extraordinary image of all was that of Mark McGwire, once the game's most celebrated slugger but now the face of the steroid scandal, reduced to a shrunken, lonely, evasive figure whose testimony brought him to the verge of tears. During the course of an all-day, nationally televised hearing, the House Government Reform Committee fulfilled its goal of examining baseball's oft-criticized drug-testing program and its impact on steroid use among teenagers. Committee members said baseball's policy was full of holes and threatened to legislate tougher testing policies if the sport doesn't come up with them itself. Asked repeatedly by committee members whether he had used steroids, Mark McGwire deflected each question.

In 1998 McGwire hit 70 homers, breaking the single-season record of 61 set in 1961 by Roger Maris of the New York Yankees. McGwire's record was eclipsed three years later by Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants, who hit 73 home runs. Born in Pomona, California, Mark David McGwire began his baseball career as a pitcher—as did Babe Ruth , another famed home run hitter. After McGwire graduated from high school, the Montr©al Expos drafted him, but he turned down their offer and instead attended the University of Southern California (USC). At USC McGwire began to concentrate on hitting rather than pitching, and in 1984 he broke the school’s single-season home run record. That year he also played on the United States national team during the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics of the American League (AL).

McGwire and Canseco (below as a Yankee) claim they either do not know or remember Wenzlaff, although FBI source produced Wenzlaff's old phone book (below) with former Oakland sluggers' numbers in it. It was the cocktail of a hardcore steroids user, and it is one of the "arrays," or steroid recipes, Mark McGwire used to become the biggest thing in baseball in the 1990s, sources have told the Daily News. Long before Jose Canseco claimed he injected McGwire in the behind in his tell-all autobiography "Juiced," the man known as Big Mac denied ever using illegal steroids. But according to FBI sources, McGwire's name came up several times during "Operation Equine," a landmark anabolic steroids investigation that led to 70 trafficking convictions in the early 1990s. No evidence against McGwire or any other steroid user was collected, and one former agent who worked undercover in the case says McGwire was not a target.
