He played the game with a flair for excitement. He made sensational catches, and cloud-stirring slides. He was majestic. He had a great style. He had a great personality. He had a great nickname, "Say Hey Kid." It is easy to see why he has such a hold on anyone who saw him play. I wish I had seen him in his prime. He also had great demographics. He was the best player in the game in the 1950s. He was the best player in the game for much of the 1960s. He excelled playing in New York, on the East Coast. He was the first Bay Area superstar on the West Coast. His career also had that all important factor, longevity. He played in the World Series four times, including his first season, his 11th season, and his 22nd and final season. He won two MVP awards, spaced 11 years apart (1954, 1965). He played a key position (centerfield) on a key franchise (the Giants) in the dominant league (National League) at a time in history when football and basketball had not yet overtaken baseball as the most popular sport in the country.

This Week in Giants Baseball History, August 1 - 7
By Don Shin
Date: Aug 1, 2005
Sure, they weren’t Giants, but SFDugout would like to extend congratulations to the newest members of Baseball’s Hall of Fame – Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg, as well as longtime San Diego broadcaster Jerry Coleman and ESPN icon Peter Gammons – inducted this past weekend. Here are a few other HOFers from years past.
August 1
Hall of Famer Giant Mel Ott hit his 500th home run of his career on this date in 1945, as the San Francisco Giants
August 2
Pittsburgh Pirates hurler Ron Kline for his first career four-bagger on this date in 1959. Stretch would finish his career with 521 career home runs, 469 of them as a Giant (fourth in franchise history behind Ott). Twenty-seven years and a day later, McCovey was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
August 3
Clark Drives in Six in Win: Despite only two hits, Will Clark delivered six RBIs that powered the Giants to a 12-7 victory over the San Diego Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium on this date back in 1993. The Thrill hit a 3-run shot in the fifth inning off of Padres starter

For more information, click HERE Own a Piece of Baseball History As you may notice around you, the old wooden reserved seats are being replaced at Cheney Stadium this season. This won't happen all at once. Over the course of the season, the old seats will be pulled out and the new seats installed section by section. If you sit in the reserved seats, one homestand you may be in the old seats, the next homestand you may have a new one waiting for you when you arrive. When the project is finished, all seats in the reserved sections, including the rows that currently have bleacher seats, will be the same type as in the box seat sections. The wooden seats have a great history behind them. They saw their first baseball game as part of San Francisco Seals Stadium when it opened in 1931. The San Francisco Seals and San Francisco Missions both played in the stadium as Pacific Coast League members until 1938 when the Missions moved to Hollywood and became the Stars. The Seals continued to play in the stadium until the New York Giants moved to San Francisco for the 1958 season. Seals Stadium saw Major League baseball for two seasons until Candlestick Park opened for the 1960 season.

adventure in itself as several fans typically show up via boat in an attempt to catch a Home Run ball or at least pick it up after it starts to float. The Giants even keep track of the number of balls hitting the water with the "splash landing" count on the right field wall. They also keep track of the all-time HR leaders in order to focus on Bonds ascendance up the list (he's currently 4th behind Aaron, Ruth, and Mays). Even the concession stands embrace the team's history. You can buy sausages at Say Hey! Willie Mays Sausages, BBQ food at Orlando's In honor of Orlando Cepeda) and Gilroy Garlic Fries and microbrew beer at John J. McGraw's Derby Grills. Aside from the historic concession stands you can find just about anything you want, from sweets (Candlestick Cream) to pizza (Portwalk Pizza) to seafood sandwiches (Fresh Catch), to your basic ballpark fare as well as many other foods. The specialty food at the park though is the garlic fries.

1972 Topps Baseball Cards
By Patrick Mondout Collector's must have been somewhat disappointed in 1972 after a banner year featuring so many interesting sets in '71. Topps no longer felt the need to include cool inserts in their wax packs but did manage to put out a wildly colorful set that perhaps captures the mood of the decade as well as any set could with the possible exception of the ' 75 Topps set 1972 Cards at a Glance Kellogg's third annual effort contained variations/errors for nearly 40% of the cards! Read more about these cards and view a checklist here A 3D set which had been released in by Rold Gold Pretzels was reissued by Kellogg's (in Danish-Go 'Rounds) with very little modifications. The '70 cards are both more scarce and more valuable.

HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY San Francisco Giants Baseball History San Francisco Giants, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the West Division of the National League (NL). The Giants play at Pacific Bell Park. The team played in New York City until 1958 and was originally called the Gothams, after one of that city’s many nicknames. The Giants wear uniforms of orange, black, and white.
Founded in 1883, the Giants organization is one of the oldest in major league baseball. Also one of the most celebrated, the organization holds a major league record with 47 members in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Seven future Hall of Fame members played for the 1924 pennant-winning club, including the entire infield.
Over the decades, Giants greats have included outfielders Bobby and Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, and Mel Ott; infielders Orlando Cepeda, Willie McCovey, Johnny Mize, and Bill Terry; and pitchers Carl Hubbell, Juan Marichal, Christy Mathewson, and Gaylord Perry. Led by such legendary managers as Leo Durocher and John McGraw, the franchise has won five World Series championships, the last being in 1954.
When the Giants finished the 1932 season in last place, tensions erupted between McGraw and his players. McGraw named the slugging first baseman and 1930 league MVP Bill Terry to take over as player-manager in 1933. Terry guided the Giants to a World Series victory that year with help from home-run hitting outfielder Mel Ott and league-leading pitcher Carl Hubbell, both part of the talented team built by McGraw. In 1936 and 1937 Terry again led the Giants to pennant victories, but the team fell in the World Series before the new dominant power in major league baseball—the New York Yankees.

Top of the 2nd
NL CY YOUNG
While the battle continues to reign between Curt Schilling, Randy Johnson and Tom Glavine, don’t forget Braves closer John Smoltz. Last night Smoltz earned his 40th save in Atlanta's 114th game and became the quickest pitcher to reach 40 saves. Lee Smith of St. Louis was the previous fastest to 40 saves, doing it in 117 games in 1993. Bottom of the 2nd ONE OUT OF THREE Don’t minimize the importance of the Sox 4-2 win over the A’s last night. The win moved Derek Lowe way ahead of Barry Zito in the Cy Young race and with the Angels losing it enabled the Sox to pick up a game on both the A’s and Anaheim, while maintaining pace with the Yanks who beat KC, 6-3. It’s simple math but remember losing three straight means losing three games in the standings to your opponent while losing two out of three means only losing one game in the standings. Top of the 3rd WINNING SERIES Just so you know I’m not joking around about the significance of winning series, the Yankees have played 12 series since the end of June and haven’t lost any of them and by defeating Arizona yesterday 4-1, the Braves have won 11 road series and tied four since dropping two of three to the New York Mets at Shea on April 15-17.
