Regarding by many experts as the best all-around baseball player in Major League history, Willie Mays excelled for the Giants for 21 seasons. He is the franchises's career leader in virtually every category, including games (2,857), hits (3,187), and homeruns (646). In 1951 Willie broke into the majors with the New York Giants, hit .274, and was named the National League Rookie of the Year. The next season he played in only 34 games before joining the service. Mays returned in 1954 and was named the National League MVP after leading the League with a .345 batting average, 41 homruns and 110 RBI's. In his incredible career, Willie batted .300 or better ten times and went over the 100 RBI mark ten times also. Mays earned his second MVP award in 1965 when he hit 52 home runs and batted .317. But Mays was more than just a great hitter, much more. He led the National League in stolen bases four times and won twelve Gold Gloves (one each year from 1957 to 1958). The 'Say Hey Kid' is best known for his over-the-shoulder basket catch of Vic Wertz's drive to deep center field in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series against the Cleveland Indians. Mays appeared in twenty four All-Star Games and was named All-Star Game MVP twice. At the age of 42 Willie was traded to the New York Mets, and he played in New York until he retired in 1973. There may never be another player who combines the all-around skills, power and speed of the great Willie Mays.

87. The Next Willie Mays
Bobby Bonds was going to be the next willie mays, but that s a mighty weight toput on somebody s The burden of expectation can crush a baseball player.
http://www.thediamondangle.com/archive/apr03/bobby.html
The Next Willie Mays
By Robert Nishihara The burden of expectation can crush a baseball player.  The burden of becoming the next Willie Mays takes the "can" out of the aforementioned equation.  The legacy of the "Say Hey Kid" has taken on a life of its own, devouring all comparisons and players that get caught up in its vortex. Yet, there have been those willing to subject players to that unreasonable level of scrutiny. And the very first man to have to shoulder that burden was Mays' teammate and good friend, Bobby Bonds. Because he was the marquee outfielder on the San Francisco Giants after Willie Mays retired and because he possessed an impressive array of athletic skills, the comparisons came rolling ominously and inevitably his way. He ran with the power and fluidity of a sprinter.  His arm was strong and accurate.  He made plays in the field instinctively.  At the plate, his great speed brought him to the leadoff spot but he also possessed the power of a clean-up hitter.  He made his major league debut just after his 22nd birthday and, six seasons later, came within a single home run of becoming the first 40-40 man in baseball history. And it wasn't good enough.

Say Hey... wait a minute
Barry's bombs still short of a-Mays-ing.
By Colin Twomey Published: Thursday, April 22, 2004 My dad used to tell me stories about Willie Mays, The Say Hey Kid. He would tell me about the Polo Grounds, that cursed fourth outfielder, tirelessly robbing Mays of home runs. He would tell me about Mickey and the Duke, too: unfortunate souls forever destined to be the second and third best outfielders in New York in the '50s.
But most of all, my dad would tell me about The Catch. As my dad tells it, Willie ran a quarter of a mile that day at the Polo Grounds in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series, to chase down a shot that leapt off the bat of Vic Wertz. Willie nestled under the ball in the deepest part of the spacious ballpark, cradled it effortlessly in his famous basket, and then wheeled and unleashed his cannon of an arm to keep the runners from scoring. My dad and I used to travel back to 1954, to the Polo Grounds, to the days of Willie Mays, and watch Willie skirt across the outfield grass to catch a sure double dropping from the heavens. He and I would listen closely as announcer Jack Brickhouse nearly stutters with amazement, stating in pure awe that The Catch "must have been an optical illusion to most people." Good defenders make good catches, but only the magical Willie Mays makes The Catch. That's because, my dad used to tell me, Mays is the greatest baseball player that ever lived.

94. Willie Mays Is 70 By Harvey Froomer
The month of May was always willie mays’ time. willie Howard mays was born book and in the memory of so many baseball fans. Happy Birthday, willie mays!
http://www.travel-watch.com/willieis70.htm
More Articles Home Willie Mays Is 70 by Harvey Frommer – The month of May was always Willie Mays’ time. Willie Howard Mays was born on May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama - 69 years ago today. The New York Giants called him up on the 15th of May in 1951 from Minneapolis in the American Association. He was bating .477 after 35 games. Garry Schumacher, publicist for the Giants at that time, recalled the first time he ever saw Mays. “The Giants were on their way from Chicago to Philadelphia to conclude the last three games of a road trip,” Schumacher said. “I was by the front door of the Giants’ office on Times Square. Suddenly, this kid comes in. There were always a lot of kids coming around; some of them wanted tickets and some wanted tryouts. He was carrying a few bats in one hand and a bag in the other that contained his glove and spikes. He was wearing the most unusual cap I ever saw, plaid colored. When I found out who he was, we bought him some clothes and then sent him to Philadelphia to join the club. He was wearing the new clothes when he left, but funny thing - he refused to take off that funny cap. He made his major league debut with the Giants on May 25, 1951. But his start in the majors after just 116 minor leagues games was a shaky one. He was hitless in his first 12 at-bats, cried in the dugout and said, "I am not ready for this". He begged manager Leo Durocher to send him back down to the minors.

95. Steve Sailer: "How Jackie Robinson Desegregated America" - National Review, 4/8/

http://www.isteve.com/JackieRobinson.htm
COMPETITION V. DISCRIMINATION
How Jackie Robinson Desegregated America
Perhaps the least-learned lesson of the saga of Jackie Robinson is that competition can transform self-interest into an engine for racial fairness.
by STEVE SAILER [This was the cover story of the April 8, 1996 issue of National Review www.iSteve.com Email Steve FIFTY years ago, on April 18, 1946, Jackie Robinson broke organized baseball's color barrier with a characteristic bang, homering and scoring four runs in his historic first game for the Brooklyn Dodgers' top farm team. This anniversary will no doubt unleash a wave of media meditations, since it combines the two national pastimes of the American male intellectual: denouncing racism and waxing nostalgic over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Spike Lee is preparing The Jackie Robinson Saga , and I'm sure Stephen Jay Gould will favor us with his thoughts. Yet, beyond the obvious platitudes, baseball's long struggle over race can yield some surprising perspectives on our national predicament. The Robinson epic is generally lumped in with the 1954 Brown decision against segregated public schools and the 1964 Civil Rights Act outlawing job discrimination. Yet two crucial differences stand out. 1) The integration of organized baseball preceded the civil-rights revolution, and in reality baseball helped make later reforms politically feasible by giving white Americans black heroes with whom to identify. 2) Government had almost nothing to do with this triumph of the competitive market. Baseball owners finally realized that the more they cared about the color of people's money, the less they could afford to care about the color of their skin.
