Mays as a player
Mays was a tremendous athlete, and every facet of the game seemed to come naturally to him. He could hit for both average and power, finishing his career with a batting average of .302, 660 home runs and 1902 runs batted in . He is among the few players to have hit more than 50 home runs in each of two or more seasons. He is the player with the longest time elapsed between 50+ homer seasons, hitting 50 or more in both and . Unlike some of the game's greatest hitters, Mays was also an outstanding defensive player. After their instigation in 1957, he won 12 consecutive Gold Glove Awards for his outfield defense and gained a reputation for making catches that no other player could. WILLIE MAYS MADE THE signature defensive play of his Hall of Fame career, 25 years before being inducted at Cooperstown. Main April 21, 2005 Willie Mays Pena Willy Mo Pena continues to pound the ball for the Cincinnati Reds. He doubled in the first run of the game with two out in the first for the Reds. He now has 13 hits, 11 for extra bases and is slugging .971. Pena and Dunn are a potent slugging duo so far. If Griffey and Kearns can come around, they can turn Cincy into a high power offense. Posted by David Pinto at 01:36 PM Sluggers TrackBack (0) Comments i STILL don't know why kearns out there instead of pena. it ain't the glove, neither... Posted by: lisa gray at April 21, 2005 06:43 PM Pena has had 556 major league at bats which is about average for a season and has hit 37 homers including the ones hit this season. Pena needs to be in lineup even if it means filling in for Griffey or Kearns every other day with Pena being the one to play every day. If he cuts back on his strikeouts and connects more often he will be even better. Posted by: Andrew Godfrey at April 22, 2005 09:06 AM I'm waiting on the Reds to trade Dunn or Kearns so Wily Mo can play everyday - he's a slugger, pure and simple, and he needs to be in the lineup. I'm sure one of the two will get traded before the deadline. Jared Posted by: Jared B.

Willie Mays (Born May 6, 1931, Westfield, Ala., U.S.)
American professional National League baseball player who was notable for his batting and fielding.
After retiring as a player, Mays was a part-time coach and did public relations work for the Mets. In 1979 Mays took a public relations job with a company that was involved in gambling concerns, with the result that he was banned from baseball-related activities just three months after he was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1985 the ban was lifted, and in 1986 Mays became a full-time special assistant to the Giants.

Willie Mays on Miraloma Drive
by Steve W. LaBounty
August 2000 The most popular feature of the San Francisco Giants cozy new home, may not actually be inside the brick and iron walls. Before each game the ocean of fans that flow into the front gate of Pacific Bell Park make an eddy around a magnificent bronze statue of baseball's greatest living player, Willie Mays. The spot is a meeting place, an informal will-call for friends. Of the many people that pose for photos in front of the statue, most appear stiffer than the inanimate Mays. Willie is portrayed post-swing, smiling at another shot into the gap, leaning for a sprint around imaginary bases. In the broad, redbrick Willie Mays plaza the graceful monument has a perfect home. The real Willie Mays had a more difficult time finding a home in 1957 San Francisco.
Real Estate and Race
San Francisco had won the Giants away from their birthplace of New York, and the team was preparing to move into cozy Seals Stadium for the 1958 season. The star center fielder also started his preparations, by house hunting with his wife Marghuerite.

Willie Mays, Baseball, Being A Son
Joseph's piece on Willie Mays having lunch with Bill Clinton brought back many memories. My dad always thought Mays was the greatest player ever, the epitome of a five-tools player. Since my father's passing in 1989, it is this time of year that I miss my him the most, when we would discuss (sometimes heatedly) the merits of our beloved Phillies , and spend hours together watching preseason games and debating roster moves. A funny thing: a couple of years ago I was talking with my cousin. He remembered visiting us and spending the night, and my father passing him the sports page at breakfast. Not being a sports fan, he couldn't understand the honor being bestowed on him, especially with my brother and I protesting loudly for the privilege (like we did every Sunday). For some reason, his view of my family being "sports-crazed" (as he put it) always makes me smile.
