Mays as a player
Mays was a tremendous athlete, and every facet of the game seemed to come naturally to him. He could hit for both average and power, finishing his career with a batting average of .302, 660 home runs and 1902 runs batted in . He is among the few players to have hit more than 50 home runs in each of two or more seasons. He is the player with the longest time elapsed between 50+ homer seasons, hitting 50 or more in both and . Unlike some of the game's greatest hitters, Mays was also an outstanding defensive player. After their introduction in 1957, he won 12 consecutive Gold Glove Awards for his outfield defense and gained a reputation for making catches that no other player could. He was also an excellent baserunner

Memories of Willie
I saw Mays' 563rd career homerun at Shea Stadium and afterwards a guy behind me in the stands spilled beer all over my Giant's Pennant which I still have today. -Greg Jezewski My brother Guy and I were raised in San Leandro, East Bay. He taught me everything about baseball and we never missed a Giant's game on the radio. For my 16th birthday he took me to a double header and for my 35th birthday he gave me an autographed 1963 Willie Mays Baseball Card. What a life time bond we share. Willie.

He was a well rounded player, being a fantastic hitter, baserunner and centerfielder. He was consistently a great player for the New York Giants and a good player in his later years for the New York Mets. Mays is truly one of baseball's greats and was really the first legendary African American player to play the game Mays has achieved a number of accomplishments in the game. HOWARD ‘WILLIE’ MAYS Born May 6, 1931, Westfield, Ala., both Mays' father and grandfather had been baseball players. Willie, who batted and fielded right-handed, played semiprofessional baseball when he was 16 years old and joined the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro National League in 1948, playing only on Sunday during the school year. The National League New York Giants paid the Barons for his contract when he graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School in 1950. After two seasons in the minor leagues, Mays went to the Giants in 1951. He became known first for his spectacular leaping and diving catches before he established himself as a hitter. He served in the army (1952-54), and in the 1954 season, when the Giants won the National League pennant and the World Series, Mays led the league in hitting (.345) and had 41 home runs. In 1966 his two-year contract with the Giants (moved to San Francisco in 1958) gave him the highest salary of any baseball player of that time. He was traded to the New York Mets midseason in 1972 and retired after the 1973 season. Late in his career he played in the infield, mainly at first base. His career home run total was 660 and his batting average .302. He led the league in home runs in 1955, 1962, and 1964-65.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
Tier 1 - "The Ultimate"
These are the absolute top MLB players of all time. Record setters, championship leaders, ancient legends and icons fading to glory... they define the history of the sport.
I'm going to list the players on the top 2 Tiers from before, plus Murray and Carter (Total: 82). Please make a full list of 40 players you consider the greatest or most Hall worthy.

Willie Mays was only 16 years old when he entered the world of professional baseball in 1947 with the Negro League's Birmingham Black Barons. That season, Jackie Robinson would break baseball's color barrier and open the door for Mays and every other player who had been denied a shot at Major League Baseball because of skin color. Within 4 years, he would be on his way to establishing himself as one of the greatest players in the games. Mays has been described by writers as a player who approached every game like he was trying to make the team. It was 1950 when the New York Giants sent scout Eddie Montague to spring training in Birmingham to take a look at the Baron's first baseman Alonzo Perry. It wasn't Perry that caught his eye it was Willie Mays. Montague dispatched his scouting report to New York and it included the description, "The greatest ball player I had ever seen in my life." The Giants immediately starting to try to find a way to get Mays into their fold.

Willie Mays *Willie Mays was born on this date in 1931. He was an African-American Baseball player.
From Westfield, Alabama, both of his parents were athletes. His father played baseball on the all-Black teams of the segregated south, and his mother was a champion sprinter in her school. In his youth, his father also worked in a steel mill, and played on a semi- professional team sponsored by the mill. Young Mays was taught to catch a ball before he could walk, and at age 14, he joined his father on the mill team. His high school had no baseball team, so he played basketball and football.
Mays began his professional career at age 16, playing with the Birmingham Black Barons in the segregated Negro Southern League. While his father avidly supported Willie's ambition to be a professional ball player, he also insisted his son finish high school. In his first year with the Barons, Willie was restricted to playing home games so he wouldn't miss school. The day he graduated from high school, the New York Giants signed him. Mays began playing in Trenton, New Jersey quickly advancing to their AAA farm club, the Minneapolis Millers.
In 1951, at the age of 20 he joined the Giants at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Nicknamed the “Say Hey Kid”; Mays led NL in Home Runs and stolen bases 4 times each. He was a 2-time MVP (1954,65) with NY-San Francisco Giants and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mays played in 24 All-Star Games, earning MVP honors twice (1963,68). He was a 12-time Gold Glove winner; hit 660 Home Runs and had 3,283 hits in his career. In 1986, Mays returned to the San Francisco Giants organization, where he serves as special assistant to the president of the club.
