DON MATTINGLY HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS On January 19,2001 in Indianapolis, Indiana Don Mattingly was inducted into the INDIANA BASEBALL HALL OF FAME. Don was the first Hoosier player to be inducted as soon as he was eligible—being out of baseball five years. To help memorialize his accomplishments, both at the high school level at Evansville Memorial, and as a Yankee, the Hall of Fame has created a limited edition framed memorabilia item. As you can see it is the front and back of a single fold brochure, in four color, with high school and Yankee pictures in a nice frame with complimentary matting. Each piece is signed and numbered by Don himself. There will be only 250 of this pieces prepared, and thanks to Don’s generosity, all the proceeds will go to the INDIANA BASEBALL HALL OF FAME. Each 10 1/2" x 22" piece is $100. You can order as many as you want for that price. At the Hall of Fame induction ceremony Don was presented with #23, and #1 was a part of a raffle for the Hall of Fame. The piece was offered to the public the night of the inductions and to date we are in the 30 range of prints sold.

Player A graduate of Memorial High School in Evansville in 1979, he led the Tigers to a state record 59 straight victories through the 1978-79 season. In ’78 the Tigers were crowned State Champions and were State Runners-up in ’79. Don was the L.V.Phillips Mental Attitude recipient in 1979. He was All City, All S.I.A.C., and All State in both 1978 and 1979. During the four years he played in high school the Tigers compiled a 94-9-1 won – loss record and Don hit .463. He still holds Memorial records for hits-152, doubles-29, triples-25 (also the state record), RBI’S- 140, and runs scored- 99. The New York Yankees drafted him in the 19 th round and he signed rather than attend Indiana State University and play baseball. He made all the stops through the minor leagues, Oneonta, Greensboro, Nashville and then AAA Columbus, and putting up great averages at each stop. In retrospect one wonders how he could have been drafted so low, but my his own admission he wasn’t drafted sooner because he couldn’t run and couldn’t throw. Those perceived shortcomings didn’t keep him from achieving greatness. Compared to other Yankees he ranks second in games played at first base, 1,634, only trailing Gehrig. His 2,153 hits ranks him fifth on the all-time Yankee list. The six grand slams he hit in 1987 set a major league record. 1,099 RBI’S ranks him seventh on the all-time list. Don’s ten consecutive games with at least one extra base hit in ’87 broke Babe Ruth’s record of nine.

CAREER BRIEFLY:
George Steinbrenner’s style may make it difficult to be a fan of any Yankee, but Don Mattingly was the type of player who was hard not to like. “Donnie Baseball” earned his nickname because as famed statistician Bill James said, he was “100 percent baseball, percent bulls-.” Though he came up through the Yankees organization as an outfielder that could only hit for average, Mattingly switched to first base, and eventually developed some pop in his bat. In 1985, he took advantage of the short right field corner in Yankee Stadium to achieve career highs in home runs and RBI (35 and 145). He won his only MVP that year, as well as his first of nine Gold Gloves. He hit over .300 in every season between 1984 and 1989 before back problems began to affect his production. He still played great defense, but his numbers became average for a first baseman, and his career ended at age 34.
LEGACY:
Don Mattingly earned the respect of everybody around the league, and fans wish that every player had his work ethic. He’ll also be remembered for making an appearance on “The Simpsons” as part of an All-Star softball team.

: L YR G AB R H HR RBI SB BA Don Mattingly biography on Baseball Almanac for complete statistics. Babe Ruth might have a lot more home runs, but when it comes to special places with Yankees' fans, he can't hold a candle to Don Mattingly. On a recent ESPN online poll, when asked who should be the next player elected into baseball's Hall of Fame, fans responded with more than 70 percent opting for Mattingly. New York fans got their first glimpse of their future first baseman during the 1982 season. At the time, it was tough for a player in the Yankees farm system to catch on with the big league club. New York's preference was to trade prospects for proven players. Used sparingly, Mattingly picked up 2 hits in 12 at-bats. In 1983, Mattingly again saw limited playing time. Playing in the outfield, the position he played when he was drafted by the Yankees, Mattingly hit .283 with 4 home runs and 32 runs batted in. The next season, Mattingly established himself as a regular in the lineup. Fans liked the way he approached his work at first base and they loved the work ethic he displayed. In 1984, he caught everyone's attention by hitting .343 with 23 home runs and 110 runs batted in. Mattingly's career average in the minor leagues was .332, but he had shown little indication that he could hit for power. At the Major League level, however, his power was starting to develop. Mattingly credits his success in his first full season to the lessons he learned in 1982 and 1983. He said he became a patient two-strike hitter and learned to watch for an inside pitch that he might drive into Yankee Stadiums right-field porch.
