Out to the Ballgame
The Curse of Christy Mathewson
The first great pitcher in history was a Giant. Since his departure, such aces have been scarce. By Jmar Gambol. Home Index The Giants are cursed. No, I'm not talking about their forty-seven-year championship drought. The Cubs, the Indians, the Red Sox, let them go first, they've suffered longer and deeper (those poor Red Sox!). The championship drought in San Francisco has been dubbed "The Curse of Sal Maglie" by a local sportswriter and it's not my concern here. The curse I'm talking about is something subtler than not winning any World Series since 1954, although it certainly is a factor in that failure. It's the longstanding absence from the team of legendary pitchers. I call it the curse of Christy Mathewson. Not that Matty ever wished ill upon the team he brought to glory. Mathewson was, if anything, a gentleman, but first he was one of the greatest pitchers of all time, the first true national baseball superstar, with the classic beauty of a Greek god and the skill to match, one of the so-called first five immortals of the Hall of Fame. Acclaimed author Roger Kahn, in his book The Head Game, submits a proudly subjective list of the greatest pitchers of all time. Christy Mathewson tops his list, for what Kahn calls "his matchless gamesman's mind." He could learn any pitch and work it into his repertoire and create an whirlwind of pure untouchability; his object, the defeat the man in the box, and he was fully conscious of his power when on a pitcher's mound. Kahn spends a couple of chapters of The Head Game waxing poetic about Mathewson, the greatest of Giant pitchers. And Kahn a Dodger fan!

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

from Mathewson's grand-niece in 1989. He is asking $269,000. Maria also serves as the area director for the Christy Mathewson Baseball Association, in which two of his sons are playing. The Scranton Times-Tribune reports that although Mathewson was not born in the home, he did live there sometime after 1880 when attending Keystone Academy. Mathewson, a Factoryville native, won 30 or more games four times in his career from 1900 to 1916. In 1936, he joined Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson as the first class of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The home is located on 16 Mathewson Terrace, just north of US Route 6. The Associated Press HAVE AN OPINION ON THIS STORY?

The Old Ball Game: How John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, and the New York Giants Created Modern Baseball
Author:
Frank Deford Format: Hardcover Pub. Date: 10 March, 2005 Publisher: Atlantic Monthly Press ISBN: Book Review Customer Reviews Review #1 Ranking 4 `The Old Ball Game' serves as a fine introduction to its subject, which is John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, the New York Giants, and to a much lesser extent their whole era of baseball. There is no new or groundbreaking material here for the fan that is already familiar with the subject, but for them it can still serve as a baseball valentine celebrating these heroes and their times. While the book stops far short of its sub title's claim - that McGraw, Mathewson, and the Giants created modern baseball, it does nicely illustrate their importance in the continuing evolution of the game.
A note on Deford's writing style is necessary. I heard him speaking about this book on NPR, and his oratory was beautifully captivating. He writes in much the same way that he speaks, but what works for him in his spoken word stories is not as effective in print - sometime his language gets in the way of the story rather than moving it along. It was enough of a problem for me to dock a star from my review rating, but I still found the book enjoyable.

Born To Be A Hero
On a spring day in 1929, a small aircraft circled Old Main and Tustin Gym before descending upon the Bucknell baseball field. Practice disrupted, Coach John Plant's ball club watched in amazement as the Waco 10 made a perfect landing at the edge of the diamond. Exiting the plane, a tall and athletic-looking pilot waved to the players, who knew the air ace immediately. Christy Mathewson Jr., Class of 1927, was born to be a hero. "Everybody liked Christy," says classmate Anna Outwater Day '27, from Harrisonburg, Va. "All of the memories I have of him are that he was a wonderful person. He was handsome, friendly, and mixed in with everybody. He never seemed to think of himself as important just because of his father." His father, of course, was Christy Mathewson Sr., one of the greatest baseball pitchers of all time, an American legend idolized by millions.
