Summary: Comment: `The Old Ball Game' serves as a fine introduction to its subject, which is John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, the New York Giants, and to a much lesser extent their whole era of baseball. There is no new or groundbreaking material here for the fan that is already familiar with the subject, but for them it can still serve as a baseball valentine celebrating these heroes and their times. While the book stops far short of its sub title's claim - that McGraw, Mathewson, and the Giants created modern baseball, it does nicely illustrate their importance in the continuing evolution of the game.
A note on Deford's writing style is necessary. I heard him speaking about this book on NPR, and his oratory was beautifully captivating. He writes in much the same way that he speaks, but what works for him in his spoken word stories is not as effective in print - sometime his language gets in the way of the story rather than moving it along. It was enough of a problem for me to dock a star from my review rating, but I still found the book enjoyable.
If you are already knowledgeable on the subject of McGraw, his star pitcher, and his amazing team, you can take or leave this book depending on how you feel about baseball "valentines". If you are new to the subject, however, this is a fine place to start to whet your imagination and encourage you to learn more about these great stars and this fascinating era of baseball's history.

Lou Gehrig started his professional baseball career at a time when players began to be seen as national celebrities. Block's book takes readers on an exhilarating journey through the centuries in search of clues to the evolution of our modern National Pastime. Among his startling discoveries is a set of long-forgotten baseball rules from the 1700s. Block evaluates the originality and historical significance of the Knickerbocker rules of 1845, revisits European studies on the ancestry of baseball which indicate that the game dates back hundreds, if not

Profile: Christy Mathewson, "The Big Six"
I n 1900, a young man named Christy Mathewson left Bucknell College in Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the glee club, and headed south for a chance to play professional baseball. After winning 21 games with Norfolk in the minor leagues, he joined the New York Giants. Mathewson promptly lost three games and was sent back down to the minors. The Reds drafted him at the end the season but then traded him to the Giants for Amos Rusie. This trade has been characterized as "probably the worst in the history of baseball". Rusie would not win another game. Mathewson would pitch a no-hitter in his first year and became one of the best pitchers in the history of baseball. The rise of Christy Mathewson to greatness during those infant years of major league baseball was a major reason the Giants rose out of the doldrums and became one of the most successful teams in baseball. Prior to Mathewson's rookie year of 1901, the Giants had struggled for respectability in the nation's largest city. From their first year of existence in 1883 to 1902, they were mostly a second division team. With the arrival of Mathewson and the fiery manager John McGraw in 1902 who brought in quality players, came the turnaround they fans so feverishly desired. In 1901, Mathewson got off to a great start in his rookie year, winning 20 games and pitching a no-hitter. When the next season started, the Giants manager at the time, for some strange reason, tried to convert Mathewson from pitcher to first baseman. Thank goodness John McGraw came along and he had the good sense to leave Mathewson alone. McGraw brought in the talent he needed and along with Mathewson's 35 wins, the Giants had their first pennant.

MLB Greatest Players THE 50 GREATEST MLB PLAYERS Christy Mathewson Christy Mathewson was a college man, sang in the glee club, belonged to a literary society, served as a model of clean living, and mowed down opposing hitters in his spare time. In a time where baseball was known for hard-living, hard-drinking baseball players, there was Christy Mathewson. He was the role model after whom every parent wanted their children to model their lives. On the mound, he was a completely different story. He was a fierce competitor that became arguably the most dominating pitcher ever. During his illustrious 17-year career, he led the league in wins four times, won five strikeout titles, won 30 or more games four times, pitched four shutouts and ten complete games in World Series competition, and won 373 games in his career. In 1936, he joined Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson as the first class of baseball Hall of Famers.
