Baseball Almanac "A pitcher is not a ballplayer." - Christy Mathewson B aseball Almanac is pleased to present an unprecedented collection of baseball related quotations spoken by Christy Mathewson and about Christy Mathewson. Christy Mathewson Quotations From Christy Mathewson "A boy cannot begin playing ball too early. I might almost say that while he is still creeping on all fours he should have a bouncing rubber ball." "Anybody's best pitch is the one the batters ain't hitting that day." "A pitcher is not a ballplayer." "A young ballplayer looks on his first spring training trip as a stage struck young woman regards the theater." "...But the saddest words of all to a pitcher are three: 'Take him out,'" "If you've ever been around a group of actors, you've noticed, no doubt, that they can talk of nothing else under the sun but acting. It's exactly the same way with baseball players. Your heart must be in your work." "I owe everything I have to them (fans) when I'm out there on the mound. But I owe the fans nothing and they owe me nothing when I am not pitching."

Career Pitching Record Other Resources In an era when the public perceived major league players as tough, brawling, hard-drinking, profane ruffians, Mathewson was the All-American boy. Well-dressed and clean-cut, he had starred in baseball, basketball and football at Bucknell University, where he was class president and a member of the glee club and literary society. Grantland Rice once wrote of Mathewson, "He handed the game a certain. . . indefinable lift in culture, brains, personality." Mathewson dropped out of college to play professional baseball in 1899. A right-handed pitcher, he developed a pitch called the "reverse curve" or "fadeaway," now usually known as the "screwball," a pitch that breaks in on a right-handed hitter rather than away from him. Later in his career, he came up with another unusual pitch that he called a "dry spitter," which was probably a knuckleball. He joined the NL's New York Giants during the 1900 season and had an 0-3 record before being sent back down to the minor leagues. But he was back to stay in 1901 and, during the next 14 seasons, he won 20 or more games 13 times and 30 or more 4 times.

HOW "MATTY" BECAME A PITCHER
From The Literary Digest , May 11, 1912 "We want to see what you've got," said he. Most of the baseball population of the town gathered to see me get my try-out, and I pitched for two hours, while the critics stood around and watched me closely, to discover what I could do. They sent their best batters up to face the curves I was throwing, and I was "putting everything I had on the ball." After a full hour's dress rehearsal, and when, at last, I "fanned" out the captain of the team, he came up, slapped me on the back, and said: "You'll do. We want you to pitch this afternoon." That, I am sure, was the very proudest day of my life. We had to drive ten miles to the opponents' town, and all the other boys watched me leave with the men. And you can imagine my pride while I watched them , as they stood on one foot and then the other, nudging one another and saying, "'Husk' is going to play with the men!" They called me "Husk" in those days. It was a big jump upward for me, and I would hardly look at the other youngsters as I climbed into the carriage with the captain. If the full truth were told, however, I felt almost "all in" after the hard session I had been through in the morning.
