Not to be confused with an unrelated, less talented Pedro Martinez who pitched for various teams in the mid-1990s, the brother of one-time Dodgers hurler Ramon Martinez emerged from his sibling's shadow after a trade for Delino DeShields sent him from Los Angeles to Montreal at the end of 1993. North of the border, this Pedro established himself as a major talent with a Cy Young award-winning season in 1997, going 17-8 with an major-league-best 1.90 ERA, 305 strikeouts, and a league-leading 13 complete games, all despite being bothered by a strained ligament in his right thumb. He held NL batters to a .184 batting average and was the first ERA leader with 300 strikeouts since Steve Carlton turned the trick in 1972. Two years later, he won another Cy Young Award with the

His career overshadowed by that of his younger brother Pedro, Ramon Martinez was at one point a dominant twenty-game winner. A tall, gangly right-handed pitcher, Martinez made use of a scorching heater juxtaposed with slow changeups to baffle his opponents throughout his tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers . Until he suffered through injuries and inconsistencies throughout the late '90's, Martinez was a workhorse whose acute knowledge of pitching was rivaled perhaps only by his brother. The one-two sibling punch of Pedro and Ramon Martinez had always been a tempting thought, perhaps even more for the brothers than the teams they would play for. The Dodgers initially had claim to the two after signing Pedro in the early '90's, when Ramon was the undisputed ace of the squad. With shades of

PEDRO MARTINEZ
A skinny kid from the Dominican Republic, Pedro Martinez emerged from the shadow of his big brother Ramon, also a pitcher in the major leagues, to become the best pitcher in baseball in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In his fifth major league start, on April 13, 1994, Martinez took a perfect game into the 8th inning and lost a no-hitter in the 9th. In the 1999 American League Division Series against Cleveland, nursing a sore back, Martinez came in from the bullpen to pitch six no-hit innings and lead Boston to a victory in Game Five. The right-hander won three Cy Young Awards and four ERA titles before the age of 31.

Martinez owns a career 6-2 record with a 3.40 ERA in the post-season, with 80 strikeouts in 79 1/3 innings. In the Fall Classic, the right-hander has a 1-0 mark with seven shutout innings in his only appearance.

His 5'11 inch, 170 pound frame doesn't seem imposing on the mound. In fact, in comparison to other power pitchers in baseball like the Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez is one of the smallest pitchers in the Major Leagues. But don't let the size of this thoroughbred of the Dominican Republic fool you. He packs a powerful fastball and a knee-buckling change-up that has blown away the competition for the past three years.

Undoubtedly, some players fear having to face hard-throwing Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez. But Page 2 wasn't afraid to throw well, actually toss a few softballs high and tight to one of baseball's best pitchers. Pedro Martinez doesn't care what anybody thinks; just don't tell him how to throw. Page 2 asked Martinez 10 burning questions that others wouldn't dare to ask. 1. Page 2: You have a reputation for throwing inside and you were warned the other night when you hit a batter with a 77 mph breaking ball. Are hitters just a bunch of wimps?
Martinez:
First of all, I don't throw. I pitch. My days of throwing are long gone. I pitch inside, I don't throw. There's a big difference. 2. Do you think everyone is a little too concerned about this?
Martinez:
I don't care what they think or do. If they don't like it, Major League Baseball can kick me out of baseball. I don't care what they think. I don't care what anybody thinks. If I keep getting results like I do, having a winning record, a low ERA, a lot of strikeouts, a chance to pitch in the World Series, stay healthy and not hurt anybody, I don't care. I'm not committing any crime. I'm working hard. I'm earning my money for my family. I don't care what anybody else says about it.

New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez smiles as he is hit by a stream of water from a sprinkler that came on in the first inning of Thursday's game.
NEW YORK - Pedro Martinez took an early shower. It had nothing to do with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Martinez pitched eight sharp innings and got a customary home run from Carlos Beltran as the New York Mets defeated Arizona 6-1 Thursday night. In the first inning, Martinez was pitching to Luis Gonzalez when the Shea Stadium infield sprinkler system went off, shooting water everywhere. Some pitchers might have been annoyed. Martinez was amused. "I just got wet," he said, laughing it off. "Water is a blessing." On a chilly June night, Martinez reacted like a kid playing in a pool in the middle of summer. "I made it fun," he said. "It was fun." So was beating out a slow roller down the third-base line, his first hit after going 0-for-29 this season. The hit was his first since Sept. 4, 1997, with Montreal. It came in the middle of a three-run Mets rally in the sixth inning - and with Martinez throwing an airtight game, it just about finished off the Diamondbacks.

Pedro agrees to terms on 4-year, $50m deal with Mets
December 13, 2004 It appears Pedro Martinez has pitched his final game in a Red Sox uniform. ADVERTISEMENT Three major league sources confirmed to the Boston Globe that Martinez and the New York Mets agreed to terms on a four-year, $50 million deal this afternoon. The contract is pending Martinez passing a physical. The Red Sox resigned themselves today to losing the three-time Cy Young Award winner. "He was a great member of the Red Sox team for seven years, and a certain Hall of Famer," Red Sox president Larry Lucchino told The Associated Press in an e-mail. "He will be missed, and we are disappointed to have lost him to the Mets and the National League." Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza, told the Mets he would attempt to work out a deal with them after New York guaranteed a fourth year, a person involved in the talks said on condition of anonymity. Mets general manager Omar Minaya expressed confidence about the negotiations with Martinez, but wouldn't detail the discussions. Minaya then left baseball's winter meetings and returned to New York, and the sides will work by telephone to finalize the contract language. Martinez helped pitch Boston to its first World Series title since 1918, but Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein refused to increase the team's offer in the past two days.

He gave command performance
October 27, 2004 ST. LOUIS Not all of his teammates were happy with Pedro Martinez last night. Or maybe you didn't notice Derek Lowe, waiting at the top step of the visitors' dugout, after Martinez struck out looking to start the third inning. ADVERTISEMENT "I shook his bat, to see if I could wake it up," Lowe said. "I've never seen a guy take four fastballs right down the middle without moving his bat." Given the appalling baserunning error Cardinals pitcher Jeff Suppan made in the bottom of the inning when he somehow ran himself into a double play from third when the Sox all but offered him an escort to home it was just as well that Martinez kept his bat on his shoulder. Besides, the way he pitched last night, setting down the last 14 Cardinal batters he faced, with only Jim Edmonds's harmless fly to center leaving the infield, there was no need to embellish another stirring stanza to the ballad of Pedro, a song that is likely to be sung for generations to come. So, was this 98-pitch silencing of the most fearsome lineup in the National League (two infield hits, Edgar Renteria's third-inning double, and two walks in seven scoreless innings), spun by Martinez in his Series debut, the crowning achievement of a career whose greatest moments already are gathering dust?
