Roger Maris
Roger Maris is probably one of baseball’s most misunderstood baseball heroes. Still now after almost 40 years Maris has still not achieved his rightful place in baseball history, the Baseball Hall of Fame. Roger Maris has had a picture-perfect life starting in Hibbing, Minnesota to where he grew up in Fargo, North Dakota. His young life was marked with athleticism. He excelled at many sports not just baseball. Roger was affluent in football and track among others. His baseball career began with the Cleveland Indians in 1957 and he was traded to the Kansas City Athletics in 1958. In 1966, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. Maris retired from baseball following the 1968 season.
Roger Maris was born in the small town of Hibbing, Minnesota. He only lived there for a few years until he moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he stayed until he was ten. Maris began to realize his talent for athletics during those years. His father remembered that Roger could always play sports better than all of the other kids. More specifically he recalls that no other kid in the neighborhood could begin to match the distance in which Roger could hit the baseball. He was one of the fastest members of the track team. He was also prominent on the basketball and football teams. He was a local champion of stickball, being the only one who could hit the ball nearly 200 yards.

Maris battled Mantle, media and Babe's legacy
By Nick Acocella
Special to ESPN.com
"It fell to Roger Maris to break the sexiest record in professional sports. That will always be the line on Maris' baseball epitaph," says Steve Hirdt of the Elias Sports Bureau on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury show. While Hank Aaron had to deal with anonymous enemies as he chased Babe Ruth's career home-run record, Despite his monster '61 season, Maris finished with just 275 homers in his 12-year career. Roger Maris at least knew his antagonist when he sought to break the Babe's single-season record in 1961. Commissioner Ford Frick's insistence on creating two records ultimately had the opposite effect; it pointed up the negligible difference in establishing major league marks broken within the old 154-game schedule and the newer 162-game schedule. This alteration in perspective, however, did Maris little good in his pursuit of immortality. Quiet and shy, he recoiled from the incessant media attention. The pressure of his drive to beat the Babe so frayed Maris that he began losing his composure and his hair. The left-handed hitting rightfielder wasn't the people's choice to break the 34-year-old record. Most Yankees fans were rooting for his home-grown teammate

As a ballplayer, I would be delighted to do it again. As an individual, I doubt if I could possibly go through it again.

Candlestick was built on the water. It should have been built under it.

Every day I went to the ballpark in Yankee Stadium as well as on the road people were on my back. The last six years in the American League were mental hell for me. I was drained of all my desire to play baseball.
Roger Maris

I don't know if I want to go to New York. They'll have to pay me a lot more money because I like it here in Kansas City.

I don't want to be Babe Ruth. He was a great ballplayer. I'm not trying to replace him. The record is there and damn right I want to break it, but that isn't replacing Babe Ruth. Roger Maris I feel that I was a good all-around player, I had good speed, a good arm and could play the outfield. Roger Maris I never wanted all this hoopla. All I wanted is to be a good ball player and hit twenty-five or thirty homers, drive in a hundred runs, hit .280 and help my club win pennants. I just wanted to be one of the guys, an average player having a good season. Roger Maris I think the most privacy I had was when the game was going on.

or years, Babe Ruth's 1927 record of 60 home runs withstood the challenge of many a mighty slugger. Hack Wilson, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, Johnny Mize, Ralph Kiner, Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle each finished seasons within ten or fewer home runs of breaking Ruth's record. None of them could equal the Babe's mark. In 1961, however, things would change. As had occurred back in 1927, two Yankees pushed each other in the home run race. The 1961 version of Ruth and Gehrig was the duo of Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, a pairing that had already won three of the last five American League MVP awards. Mantle's home run stroke was hot from the very beginning of the season, as he hit nine home runs in the Yankee's first eighteen games. Maris, on the other hand, was still looking for home run #4 with the season already well over a month old. But Maris soon found his groove and by mid-May both of the Yankee sluggers were in full swing of the home run chase. On August 13th, with Maris homering twice and Mantle once, the Yankee duo sat at 45 home runs a piece, both ready to make a run at Ruth. Maris continued his hot-hitting, but Mantle went cold. Nevertheless, when Maris hit his 56th home run on September 9th, he and Mantle (with 52 home runs) broke the record for most single-season home runs by a pair of teammates. The old record was set back in 1927 by Ruth (60) and Gehrig (47).

June 22, 2003 AL PITCHING VS ROGER MARIS IN 1961 In 1961 when Roger Maris set the all time season home run record with 61 dingers, 48 different pitcher were co-responsible. Thirty-seven pitchers were knicked only once by the Mighty Maris. Nine pitchers were roughed up twice by Roger. Maris went deep three times against two pitchers, Jim Perry of the Indians and Pete Burnside of the Senators. The most notable pitching victim on Roger's hit list was fading future Hall of famer Early Wynn. There were several other quality pitchers who surrendered the gopher ball to Roger in 1961. Among them were Camilo Pascual, Mudcat Grant, Billy Pierce, Milt Pappas, Juan Pizzaro and Bill Monbouquette just to mention a few.
Against the expansion clubs of the early 60's Roger hit 13 blasts. He had 9 against the Senators but only 4 against the Angels. He whacked out 13 when playing the White Sox, by far his favorite foe on the season. He hit 8 against both Detroit and Cleveland. Boston allowed 7. Kansas City surrendered 5. Only 4 went out versus Minnesota pitching and the Oriole staff gave up a stingy 3.
Besides Jim Perry and Pete Burnside the other pitchers that were stung on more than one occasion by Roger were Pedro Ramos, Gary Bell, Gene Conley, Frank Lary, Billy Pierce, Cal McLish, Bill Monbouquette, Eli Grba and Ray Herbert.

American Life Histories, 1936-1940
On October 1 , 1961, Roger Maris slammed home run number 61 into the stands. In the last game of the regular season, Maris broke the long-standing 1927 record of baseball legend Babe Ruth for the most home runs in a single season. Fans loyal to Ruth criticized Maris. They argued that Ruth hit 60 home runs in a 154 game schedule, while Maris hit only 59 home runs in the first 154 games of the season, not reaching 61 home runs after 162 games. The Baseball Commissioner, Ford Frick, ruled that Maris did not break Ruth's record. It was not until 1991 that Maris was credited with the record. Maris's achievement stood for thirty-seven years until it too was broken by both Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals

  • Billy Crystal directs two relative unknowns as Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris in maybe the best baseball movie since "Bull Durham." By Allen Barra "61*," about the 1961 home run race between Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, isn't quite as good as I think it is. You should probably know that before reading any further. Billy Crystal, who conceived and directed the HBO movie, has shrewdly selected a subject that I can't keep my emotional distance from. Neither, I suspect, will a large portion of the film's audience. But why bother trying? It's a baseball movie, maybe the best one since Ron Shelton's "Bull Durham." The real story is so perfect it requires no embellishment, and Crystal doesn't give it any. Mickey Mantle (Thomas Jane), 30, a blond god at the height of his power (Mantle had won two Most Valuable Player awards and five World Series rings going into the 1961 season) and popularity is confronted by the first challenge to his sovereignty on the Yankees: another blond god named Roger Maris (Barry Pepper) who beat out Mantle for the MVP award in his first year on the team, 1960. The next year, spurred on (and in large part aided) by the other man's presence in the lineup, the two made an unprecedented assault on the most sacred record in baseball: Babe Ruth's single-season record of 60 home runs.
