Roger Maras: Chasing the Ghost of the Babe On October 1, 1961, nearly 40 years ago to the day, Roger Maris did what no one, including the great Babe Ruth himself, had previously done in the history of major league baseball . . . he smashed 61 home runs. With Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa exceeding that number in 1998, and with Barry Bonds' recent home run explosion, one tends to forget about Roger's superlative feat. After all, the Maris record stood longer than Ruth's and certainly McGwire's, and it was, according to ballplayers of the day, an amazingly difficult record to break.
Roger himself described many times that several weeks leading up to his historic blast breaking Ruth's record as being the darkest days of his life. He even began to lose his hair. In light of the excitement generated during Mark McGwire's and Sammy Sosa's home run spree in 1998, and this year's fantastic Barry Bonds chase, today it is hard to fathom how the 1961 chase differed in spirit and scope. However, history does not lie and we know that when Roger tied Ruth during the 154th game of the season by reaching that magic number of 60, and even when he broke the record on the last game of the year, Roger played in ballparks that were not filled and before crowds whose response to the record was comparatively tepid. Then, to make matters worse, when the games ended, Maris faced the wrath and often rude questions from the press.

N. Dakota seeks justice for Maris
April 3, 2005 As museums go, it's not much. Tucked away in a shopping mall next to a pet store full of barking dogs, the Roger Maris Museum is little more than a large display case. ADVERTISEMENT Press up against the glass and you can see some home run baseballs from 1961, uniforms Maris used to wear, and a replica of his Yankee Stadium locker. A recent remodeling added a few seats to watch film clips of Maris hitting No. 61. It's not Cooperstown, but that's another Maris story by itself. People in Fargo, N.D., are proud of it, though, just like they are of their most famous native son. "He was just loved by so many people," Fargoan Jackie Shaw said. The Maris museum is free to anyone strolling by the West Acres Mall. If you need another reason to visit, you can always get a manicure across the hall at Nails Pro. The tribute to Maris is straightforward and honest. There are old clippings, old bats, black and white pictures. It brings back memories of a time when things were simpler. Those times were long gone by the time Mark McGwire broke Maris's record in 1998. By then, players had grown oversized muscles the likes of which were never seen on Maris when he passed Babe Ruth at Yankee Stadium Oct. 1, 1961.

Just like the college tournament, the winner of the 1-16 game plays the 8-9 winner, 2-15 plays 7-10, 3-14 plays 6-11, 4-13 plays 5-12.
We're still looking to assign 141 points to each game, with the winner scoring from 71 to 100. Actually, I really wouldn't expect anyone to score 90 points in this round.

TODAY The Nation's Homepage Roger Maris: A season for the ages Roger Maris is known for dethroning America's greatest sports hero, Babe Ruth. But instead of being rewarding for this accomplishment, Maris faced a lot of hostility from the baseball public. "They acted as though I was doing something wrong, poisoning thre record books or something," said Maris at the 1980 All-Star Game. " Do you know what I have to show for 61 home runs? Nothing. Exactly nothing." Even though Maris had been the 1960 American League MVP, he was basically an unknown quantity, hitting .269. It didn't matter that he played the game with a ferocious intensity or that he was an excellent baserunner and brilliant right fielder. The people's choice was his teammate Mickey Mantle, who was also chasing the record. That 1961 season was the first year of expansion and the first year of the 162-game season. Ruth had set his record in 1927 in a 154-game season. So for many people, Maris's feat would be spoiled if he needed more than 154 games to break Ruth's record. Commissioner Ford Frick even announced that if Maris took more than 154 games to break the record it would go into the record books as a separate accomplishment from Ruth's.

H W B T : R Yr G AB R H HR RBI SB BA Roger Maris biography on Baseball Almanac for complete statistics. Imagine the thrill of breaking one of the games's greatest records of all time. Then, imagine what it would be like if the fans didn't want you to break that record. And, that will sum up Roger Maris' career. In 1961, Roger Maris hit his 61st home run of the season and broke a record that no one thought would ever be duplicated, much less broken. Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs had stood since 1927. Historians describe that 1927 Yankees squad as one of the greatest ever. Ruth's feat of 60 home runs made that season even more memorable. But, the character and personality of the two Yankees played a part in the controversy. Ruth loved the crowd, he loved to live it up on and off the field. Maris was a quiet man who was willing to be a team player to move baserunners into scoring position. Breaking Ruth's record was not an easy task for a normal man. For Maris, the chase for Ruth's record was almost unbearable. Maris started to lose his hair as the chase wore on. He was fond of quiet moments and he liked to show little emotion. His integrity and his willingness to fight for what he thought was right irritated reporters. The fans never seemed to catch on to the type of person that Maris was.
