63. Rare Baseball Books - Mickey Mantle And Babe Ruth
Before baseball players started using fancy computer designed bats and using digital Imagine Babe Ruth and mickey mantle as Your Personal Instructors
http://www.downloadfreetrial.com/recreation/lost-baseball-secrets-2.html
"The Amazing Secret of Consistently Smacking Powerful Home Runs Used by Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle!"
Rediscovered documents reveal in their own words "The Amazing Secret of Consistently Smacking Powerful Home Runs Used by Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle!" The secret is simple. You can learn it too. Take your Louisville Slugger and new fangled baseballs and toss them into the nearest dumpster. Before baseball players started using fancy computer designed bats and using digital video to analyze their swing, a poor orphan boy from Baltimore and a country boy from Oklahoma were hitting baseballs out of ball parks with raw power. When Babe or Mick were at bat, if a pitcher was lucky, they would pop one into the right field bleachers. If the Babe or Mick were hot, the ball would take off in flight with a thunderous crack and never be seen again. Can you imagine how far these Hall of Famers would have hit the ball today with the computer enhanced bats and with the new hot-core baseball? Mantle clearly would have hit one out of Yankee Stadium. Ruth probably would have hit 90 in a season. At the height of their careers, each of them took copious notes about how they played the game. In 1928, the year after Ruth hit 60 home runs and was a member of 1927 Yankees, the best baseball team in history he jotted down his power secrets. In 1956, the year Mantle won the Triple Crown, he wrote a booklet called, "How I Hit".

Mickey Mantle Eulogy
Mickey mantle was a famous baseball player for the New York Yankees.1931-1995. this eulogy was delivered by Bob Costas.
You know, it occurs to me as we're all sitting here thinking of Mickey, he's probably somewhere getting an earful from Casey Stengel, and no doubt quite confused by now.
One of Mickey's fondest wishes was that he be remembered as a great teammate, to know that the men he played with thought well of him. But it was more than that. Moose and Whitey and Tony and Yogi and Bobby and Hank, what a remarkable team you were. And the stories of the visits you guys made to Mickey's bedside the last few days were heartbreakingly tender. It meant everything to Mickey, as would the presence of so many baseball figures past and present here today.
I was honored to be asked to speak by the Mantle family today. I am not standing here as a broadcaster. Mel Allen is the eternal voice of the Yankees and that would be his place. And there are others here with a longer and deeper association with Mickey than mine.
But I guess I'm here, not so much to speak for myself as to simply represent the millions of baseball-loving kids who grew up in the '50s and '60s and for whom Mickey Mantle was baseball.

Review by Ron Kaplan As this review is written, the Yankees have just won the American League pennant for the first time in fifteen years. The next stop is the World Series, a venue which Mickey Mantle saw 12 times in his first 14 seasons. The original "Mr. October," Mantle had long been an American icon/hero. But his life took on a new essence following admission of his addiction problems, his stint at the Betty Ford Clinic, and finally, his battle against cancer. Following his death last August, he once again become the subject of numerous accounts of his life. Doubtlessly, some of these projects were put together hastily to maximize on the commercial impact his passing would have. "Letters to Mickey" is a collection culled from the thousands received by the ailing Yankee over the last few years of his life. Most came during his hospital stays, although there are some from his days at the Ford Clinic.

After I hit a home run I had a habit of running the bases with my head down. I figured the pitcher already felt bad enough without me showing him up rounding the bases.

All the ballparks and the big crowds have a certain mystique. You feel attached, permanently wedded to the sounds that ring out, to the fans chanting your name, even when there are only four or five thousand in the stands on a Wednesday afternoon.
Mickey Mantle

As far as I'm concerned, Aaron is the best ball player of my era. He is to baseball of the last fifteen years what Joe DiMaggio was before him. He's never received the credit he's due.
Mickey Mantle
But god-damn, to think you're a .300 hitter and end up at .237 in your last season, then find yourself looking at a lifetime .298 average - it made me want to cry. Mickey Mantle Heroes are people who are all good with no bad in them. That's the way I always saw Joe DiMaggio. He was beyond question one of the greatest players of the century.

MANTLE, MICKEY CHARLES (1931-1995). Mickey Mantle, major-league baseball star, was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma, on October 20, 1931, the son of Elvin Clark "Mutt" and Lovell (Richardson) Mantle. Baseball was part of Mickey Mantle's heritage; Mutt Mantle played for a semipro team on weekends and named his oldest son after Hall of Fame catcher Mickey Cochrane. Mantle was born during the Great Depression, qv The nineteen-year-old Mantle struggled early in the season and was sent back to the Yankees' top farm team, the Class AAA Kansas City Blues, in July. Devastated by his demotion and slumping badly at the plate, Mantle briefly contemplated quitting baseball, but his father talked him out of it. Mantle rejoined the Yankees at the end of August in time for the first of his twelve World Series, against the National League champion New York Giants. Mantle's initial World Series experience was a brief one, as in the sixth inning of the second game he caught his spikes on a rubber drain cover in the Yankee Stadium outfield and tore cartilage in his right knee. Sports Illustrated magazine in which he expressed regret over the effects of his drinking on his career. "God gave me a great body to play with," he wrote, "and I didn't take care of it. And I blame a lot of it on alcohol." Mantle's open and courageous admission of his alcoholism won him many new admirers, but in 1995 he became the center of controversy when he was diagnosed with liver cancer and underwent a highly publicized liver transplant. Many felt that his case had been expedited simply because of his celebrity. Criticism of Mantle's doctors increased when it was revealed that the cancer had already spread throughout his body. Mantle died nine weeks later, on August 13, 1995, in Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Mantle named 37th greatest athlete of century

Mantle was first in fans' hearts
By Larry Schwartz

Special to ESPN.com
His 536 home runs, though a considerable number, are only eighth best in history. His 10 years of batting above .300 are impressive, but not cause for sainthood. His 2,415 hits have been bettered by dozens of players. Mickey Mantle, one of his friends said, "swung from the soul." He replaced Joe DiMaggio in centerfield, but not in the hearts of the fans, and was booed for much of the first half of his career. He won the Triple Crown and the fans clamored for more. He had two MVP seasons before he was 26, and it still wasn't enough. It's not easy becoming a legend. But, in time, that's where Mickey Mantle's path took him. One can pinpoint when the jeers turned to cheers the summer of '61. Like Jack Dempsey losing "The Long Count" to Gene Tunney and winning over the nation, the Mick lost a home-run race and won millions of fans. Like many sports heroes, Mantle would become more popular in his twilight than his heyday. And his retirement only enhanced his fame. "He wasn't the greatest player who ever lived, not even of his time perhaps," wrote Richard Hoffer in

Casey Stengel, baseball manager; Mickey Mantle, baseball player Advise Congress on new anti-trusts laws Stengel: "I'm in the baseball business, it's been run cleaner than any baseball business that was ever put out in the hundred years at the present time."
Mantle: "My views are just about the same as Casey's." (U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C., July 10, 1958) On July 10, 1958, New York Yankees Casey Stengel and Mickey Mantle appeared before a Senate subcommittee to advise the lawmakers on the applicability of new anti-trust legislation to the sport of baseball. Stengel, the astute Yankees manager who had led his team to eight pennant victories in the last decade, confounded the Senators by answering all their questions in typical "Stengelese," his confusing but humorous rendition of the English language. When asked of his professional opinion of the anti-trust issue, Yankee star Mantle simply deferred to his mentor's opinion. Later that year, Stengel and Mantle would lead the Yankees to another pennant triumph, and in October, a World Series victory over the Milwaukee Braves. Stengel was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966 and Mantle in 1974. Advertisement
