Some time later I read somewhere that Mantle routinely ignored autograph requests and simply kept for himself any cards, photos, or other mementos people sent him. I was crushed. Even years after the theft, Mantle just couldn't stop celebrating. Mantle's attitude set the tone for the generations of ballplayers who came after him. Now, thanks to a strike pitting greedy, too-rich players against greedy, too-rich owners, baseball's reputation is at its lowest point since the Black Sox scandal three-quarters of a century ago, when it was discovered that some Chicago White Sox players had conspired to lose the 1919 World Series. To avoid Congressional intervention, the team owners created the office of Commissioner of Baseball and hired stern Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis to clean things up and restore baseball's good name.

A month later, Pedro Ramos was the victim of Mantle's mammoth shot into right field at Yankee Stadium. But on May 22, 1963, Mantle nearly put a baseball into orbit. Appropriately, Daily News sports writer Joe Trimble began his story: "It was Mickey Mantle in outer space again last night at the Stadium." The Yankees were anything but the dynasty of the Casey Stengel era, so it was no surprise that less than 10,000 fans were on hand to witness the Bombers edge the Kansas City Athletics in 11 innings. Mantle's skills had already begun to decline by then, but he managed to give that paltry gathering a night to remember. With the score tied at seven in the 11th, Mantle faced Bill Fischer. Tax Law Mickey Charles Mantle October 20 August 13 ) was an American baseball player, regarded as one of the best of all time. He played his entire professional career for the New York Yankees He was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma . He was named in honor of Mickey Cochrane , a famous baseball player, by his father, who was an amateur player and fervent fan. Apparently his father was not aware that Cochrane's real name was Gordon, and in later life, Mickey Mantle expressed great relief that his father had not known Cochrane's real first name, as he would have hated to be named Gordon. "Mutt" Mantle taught his son how to be a switch-hitter . He had played shortstop in the minor leagues, but on arrival at the Yankees, he became the regular right fielder (playing only a few games at shortstop and third base in to ). He moved to centerfield in 1952, replacing Joe DiMaggio , who retired at the end of the 1951 season after one year playing alongside Mantle in the Yankees outfield.
