Mickey Mantle was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma . He was named in honor of Mickey Cochrane , the Hall of Fame catcher from the Detroit Tigers , by his father, who was an amateur player and fervent fan. Apparently his father was not aware that Cochrane's real name was Gordon, and in later life, Mickey Mantle expressed great relief that his father had not known Cochrane's real first name, as he would have hated to be named Gordon. Mantle always spoke warmly of his beloved father and said he was the bravest man he ever knew. "No boy ever loved his father more" he said. Sadly, his father died of cancer at the age of 39 just as his son was starting his career. Mantle said one of the great heartaches of his life was that he never told his father he loved him. Mantle was an all-around athlete in school, playing

Eulogy for Mickey Mantle

August 15, 1995 - Dallas, TX
"It occurs to me as we're all sitting here thinking of Mickey, he's probably somewhere getting an earful from Casey Stengel, and no doubt quite confused by now. "One of Mickey's fondest wishes was that he be remembered as a great teammate, to know that the men he played with thought well of him. But it was more than that. Moose and Whitey and Tony and Yogi and Bobby and Hank, what a remarkable team you were. And the stories of the visits you guys made to Mickey's bedside the last few days were heartbreakingly tender. It meant everything to Mickey, as would the presence of so many baseball figures past and present here today. "I was honored to be asked to speak by the Mantle family today. I am not standing here as a broadcaster. Mel Allen is the eternal voice of the Yankees and that would be his place. And there are others here with a longer and deeper association with Mickey than mine. "But I guess I'm here, not so much to speak for myself as to simply represent the millions of baseball-loving kids who grew up in the '50s and '60s and for whom Mickey Mantle was baseball. "And more than that, he was a presence in our lives – a fragile hero to whom we had an emotional attachment so strong and lasting that it defied logic. Mickey often said he didn't understand it, this enduring connection and affection – for men now in their forties and fifties, otherwise perfectly sensible, who went dry in the mouth and stammered like schoolboys in the presence of Mickey Mantle.

Career Hitting Record Other Resources Elvin "Mutt" Mantle worked in lead and zinc mines, played semi-pro baseball, and wanted his son to be a major-league player. Named after Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane, the young Mantle had a complete uniform when he was three and learned to switch-hit at five. He played football as well as baseball in high school. A halfback, he suffered an injury to his left shin that resulted in osteomyelitis, a condition that weakens bones and muscles and can cause lifelong pain. After graduating from high school in 1949, Mantle began playing minor-league ball as a shortstop in the New York Yankees' farm system. When he joined the Yankees in 1951, he was announced as the heir apparent to centerfielder Joe DiMaggio, but was placed in rightfield, because DiMaggio was still playing. After a slow start, he was sent back to the minors for a while, but he returned to the Yankees in August. Mantle tore knee cartilage in the World Series that year and had to undergo surgery. The knee, and the osteomyelitis from his high school football injury, bothered him throughout his career. By the time he was thirty, both legs had to be heavily taped before every game.

Mantle: The Man, The Player, The Hero Begins airing July 13th @ 8pm CT I was fortunate enough to attend a premier showing of this new documentary on Mickey Mantle recently. The documentary was produced by George Roy who also produced "Curse of the Bambino" for HBO. Roy did an outstandingly honest job of depicting the ups and downs of Mantle's rollercoaster life. Interviews of many Mantle family members, friends and fans are in the documentary such as Billy Crystal, Bob Costas, Merlyn, David, Danny, Max, Ray, Barbara and Larry Mantle, Marty Appel, Johnny Blanchard, Moose Skowron, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, actor Ed Harris and many more. It is not intended to be a "feel good" show but I think it will give you a new insight to the hero known as "The Mick". It is approximately one hour in length.

Spavinaw, Okla. In 1951, he joined the New York Yankees of the American League; eventually he replaced Joe DiMaggio in center field. A powerful and speedy switch-hitter, Mantle had a total of 536 regular-season home runs, and a lifetime batting average of .298. His 18 home runs in World Series play remains a record. He was voted the league's Most Valuable Player in 1956 (when he won the triple crown, leading the league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in), in 1957 (when he hit a career-high .365), and in 1962. In 1961 he and teammate Roger Maris both threatened Babe Ruth 's single-season record of 60 home runs; Mantle, slowed by an injury, finished with 54, while Maris hit 61. Retiring in 1968, Mantle entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. His career was hampered by osteomyelitis of his left leg and by various injuries. Another problem, his alcoholism, contributed to his death from liver cancer. In the last months of his life he received a liver transplant, and spurred efforts to increase public awareness of transplant therapy. See biography by T. Castro (2002).
