Mickey Mantle's First Home Run

May 1, 1951 A Career Begins... by Frank Ceresi and Carol McMains (Washington, DC)
Branch Rickey
, the man who brought Jackie Robinson into the major leagues and was a superb judge of baseball talent for his entire adult life, once said that to play baseball it was necessary only to have a ball, a bat, a glove and the imagination of a young boy. Baby boomers who grew up during baseball's "golden age" during the 1950's would take all of those elements and often dream that they were Yankee great Mickey Mantle . Many a young boy would imagine going to the plate, cleaning their spikes and, like Mickey, smash a long, towering home run . . . to win the key game in the bottom of the 9th inning! We all had that dream. Even Bob Costas, a Mantle worshipper since childhood, still carries Mantle's rookie card in his wallet. Billy Crystal, producer of a new movie covering teammates Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle's "great home run chase" of 1961 paid over $200,000 for a game used glove worn by his boyhood hero known affectionately as "The Mick."

18. Mickey Mantle - Bob Costas Eulogy
The sportscaster fondly remembers the man who defined baseball for his generation.

BOB COSTAS EULOGY
www.mickey-mantle.com You know, it occurs to me as we're all sitting here thinking of Mickey, he's probably somewhere getting an earful from Casey Stengel, and no doubt quite confused by now. One of Mickey's fondest wishes was that he be remembered as a great teammate, to know that the men he played with thought well of him. But it was more than that. Moose and Whitey and Tony and Yogi and Bobby and Hank, what a remarkable team you were. And the stories of the visits you guys made to Mickey's bedside the last few days were heartbreakingly tender. It meant everything to Mickey, as would the presence of so many baseball figures past and present here today. I was honored to be asked to speak by the Mantle family today. I am not standing here as a broadcaster. Mel Allen is the eternal voice of the Yankees and that would be his place. And there are others here with a longer and deeper association with Mickey than mine. But I guess I'm here, not so much to speak for myself as to simply represent the millions of baseball-loving kids who grew up in the '50s and '60s and for whom Mickey Mantle was baseball. And more than that, he was a presence in our lives-a fragile hero to whom we had an emotional attachment so strong and lasting that it defied logic. Mickey often said he didn't understand it, this enduring connection and affection-the men now in their 40s and 50s, otherwise perfectly sensible, who went dry in the mouth and stammered like schoolboys in the presence of Mickey Mantle.

  • Born: 20 October 1931 Birthplace: Spavinaw, Oklahoma Died: 13 August 1995 (cancer) Best Known As: New York Yankee slugger
Mickey Mantle was the New York Yankees' most beloved slugger since Babe Ruth . He played his first game for the Yankees in 1951, the same year Joe DiMaggio retired; Mantle went on to replace DiMaggio in center field. Mantle was famous for his home run power both right- and left-handed; he hit 536 home runs in his career. Mantle was voted the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1956, 1957 and 1962, and won seven World Series championships with the Yankees before he retired on March 1, 1969. As great as he was, Mantle might have been greater without leg problems that dogged him throughout his career; he tore up his right knee in 1951 when he caught his spikes on a drain cover in a World Series game. A famously hard drinker, Mantle went to the Betty Ford Clinic for alcohol treatment in 1994 and received a liver transplant in 1995, shortly before his death. Mantle wore #7... His restaurant, Mickey Mantle's, is located at 42 Central Park South in Manhattan... Mantle was voted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1974... In 1961 Mantle hit 54 home runs, but was bested by teammate
