Updated 3 days 6 hours 56 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Greg Maddux Greg Maddux pitches against the Dodgers as a Chicago Cub Gregory Alan Maddux (born April 14 in San Angelo, Texas USA ) is a right-handed baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs . He is generally thought of as being one of the greatest pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball . He is one of only 22 pitchers in Major League history to notch 300 career wins , a feat that is much more difficult to achieve now compared to the past due the increased use of relief pitching, which has reduced the number of decisions for starting pitchers. He also pitched his entire career in the era of the 5-man rotation, in which starters are given fewer starts per season. For that reason, some baseball historians have said he may be the last pitcher to achieve 300 career wins for decades, if not ever. On

Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.

Young Duke wins duel with veteran Maddux July 16, 2005
    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
CHICAGO Zach Duke left 300-game winner Greg Maddux quite impressed. Duke continued the brilliant start to his career by outpitching Maddux for eight innings, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Chicago Cubs 3-0 Saturday. "It was OK, I got outpitched though," Maddux said of his performance. "Their guy didn't make many mistakes and pitched a very good game. He shut down a team that has been swinging the bats really good the last couple of games." Jason Bay ended an 0-for-18 slump with a homer as the Pirates snapped the Cubs' five-game winning streak. Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his 22nd save in 25 chances. Duke, who induced four double plays, started the season at Triple-A Indianapolis but was promoted after going 12-3. He was the Pirates' minor league pitcher of the year in 2004, when he had a 1.46 ERA for Double-A Altoona and Class A Lynchburg. "When you look up at the board he was 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA, so he was getting somebody out," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "He had the double-play ball working today. Every time we had him in trouble he enticed us in a double play."
