Encyclopedia Maddux, Greg (Gregory Alan Maddux), 1966–, American baseball player, b. San Angelo, Tex. Playing with the Chicago Cubs (1986–92, 2004–) and the Atlanta Braves (1993–2003), both in the National League, he has been noted for finesse and control, rather than for speed and power, and has more than 300 wins (and 15 or more wins in 17 straight seasons). Maddux won the Cy Young Award as the league's best pitcher four years in a row (1992–95), the first to do so. The 1994 and 1995 awards were by unanimous vote, placing Maddux with Sandy Koufax as the only pitchers so honored twice in a row. The winningest pitcher in the major leagues from 1988 through 1995, he posted an earned run average under 1.80 for two successive years (1994–95), the first time anyone had done so since Walter

    GREG MADDUX
The pitcher with the school teacher appearance, Greg Maddux won four straight Cy Young Awards in the 1990s, leading the Atlanta Braves to the post-season 11 straight seasons from 1993-2003. Four times in his career he posted an ERA two runs below his league's average, and he won at least 15 games in 16 consecutive seasons, tying a mark held by Cy Young. In five World Series starts, Maddux fashioned a 2.09 ERA, and his 176 victories were the most in the 1990s.

    Maddux Deserves Better
By Dan Holmes, August 3, 2004
It's flash versus efficiency. Speed and power versus guile and cunning. It's a rocket versus a professor. It's Roger Clemens versus Greg Maddux.
Last season the baseball world was riveted by Clemens' pursuit of 300 victories. This season, Greg Maddux is getting less attention than Howard Dean at the Democratic National Convention. Maddux deserves better.
Greg Maddux never threw 100 miles per hour. He never struck out 20 batters in a game, and he was never thrown out of a playoff game for arguing. He never threw a splintered bat at Mike Piazza, and he isn't likely to be tossed from his son's little league game. In short, Greg Maddux isn't flashy like Roger Clemens, and he doesn't have the Rocket's knack for center stage or his legendary temper. But there's a fire inside Maddux that has made him the best pitcher of his era. Better than anyone, and better than Clemens.
Where Roger was a thrower most of his career, Maddux is a pitcher. It's unfortunate that his workmanlike excellence has received less attention than the powerful, fastballing career of Clemens. It's especially sad during Maddux's climb toward 300, which has received little attention in comparison to Clemens' milestone in 2003.
