Baseball stories, Canadian (English). Grades 11 and up / Ages 16 and up. Review by Joanne Peters.
To my unpracticed eye, baseball appears simple. However, I know that it is not, and W. P. Kinsella's latest short story collection, Japanese Baseball, makes it clear that life as a baseball player, whether in Japan, South America, or the United States, has its share of complications. For some, dreams come true. In "The Mansions of Federico Juarez," a young ball player's skill and discipline brings him incredible success and enough money to build mansion after mansion, until family tragedy makes him reassess his values. Fantastic, rather than tragic elements, dominate "The Indestructible Hadrian Wilks" and "Fred Noonan Flying Services." In the former, Yossi Liebowitz, mild-mannered accountant and rabid baseball fan, is a walking - no, a stumbling - accident waiting to happen. Every time major league player Hadrian Wilks is beset by an injury, so is Liebowitz. Is it demonic possession, or just bad luck? In "Fred Noonan Flying Services," the story's protagonist is possessed by ennui. excerpt: "My best years are behind me. I've got to adjust to the inevitable slide, the hanging curve ball that only makes it to the warming track because my timing is off 1/1000 of a second, the step I've lost in the outfield, the lapses of concentration caused by my thinking of my deteriorating abilities." (p. 154)

Two Hall of Fame Backstops Recall '75 Fall Classic
From Memories and Dreams , the Hall of Fame's Quarterly Magazine Available to Friends of the Hall of Fame Members
Hall of Fame catchers Johnny Bench and Carlton Fisk. If you enjoy this article, become a member of the Friends of the Hall of Fame and receive Memories and Dreams four times each year. By Bill Francis More than a quarter century later, the 1975 World Series is still thought of as one of the most memorable ever. It came down to a seventh game, as all great Series do, with the Cincinnati Reds edging the Boston Red Sox. But before the final out was made, fans witnessed 13 home runs, five one-run games, two extra-inning games, and one Boston backstop named Carlton Fisk, who walloped a 12th inning homer after midnight in Game Six for an improbable win. Conflict, drama, excitement, memorable plays and players, this one had it all…and more. Start with the two teams: the Reds were at the apex of their phenomenal Big Red Machine era, but had only two lost World Series appearances to show for their recent success; the Red Sox, who hadn't won a World Series title since 1918, jumped from a third-place finish in 1974 to a Series berth in 1975, thanks in no small part to the rookie successes of Fred Lynn and Jim Rice. Two of the main combatants in the 1975 Fall Classic - Hall of Famers Fisk and Johnny Bench - recently offered their perspectives on the battles that took place 28 years ago. Both were at the Museum in June for a Legends Series roundtable discussion that also featured fellow catcher and 2003 inductee Gary Carter.

The opinions expressed here are not necessarily those of the Boston Red Sox
Sox Prospects For The Hall of Fame......

As expected George Brett and Nolan Ryan were first ballot entrants into the Hall of Fame as a result of the recent HOF election. Robin Yount a sure fire HOFer also was electedd on the first ballot, but Carlton Fisk of Boston and Chicago fame was less fortunate. Fisk need not worry however as he is a but another election away. Dissapointed again in the voting are Tony Perez and Gary Carter. Both belong in Cooperstown and both received fewer votes this year than last. The most likely reason for the vote drop-off is the fact that there were three first ballot entrants and Fisk also with his strong showing, leaving fewer votes for other deserving candidates. Tony Perez of Cincinnati fame and some service time with our beloved Red Sox certainly belongs. He drove in 1652 runs during his illustrious career and every player ahead of him on the all-time list already has membership to this special club. Renowned Hall members such as Willie McCovey, Harmon Killebrew, and Mike Schmidt all have driven in fewer runs than Perez. Tony who also hit 379 career dingers deserves to be in The Hall of Fame. Gary Carter may be the greatest catcher the NL has ever known. He has solid offensive numbers at a tough defensive position. Some argue that he was actually better than Fisk, a debate that I'll avoid. But Carter is made of Hall timber and eventually he'll reside in his rightful place, albiet a season or two after Fisk gets into the exclusive club.

HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Boston Red Sox Baseball History Boston Red Sox, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the East Division of the American League (AL). Originally called the Americans (the team’s name was changed in 1907), the Red Sox play at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, and wear uniforms of white, red, and blue.
The Red Sox were one of the AL’s most powerful teams in the early part of the 20th century. Baseball legends Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young helped Boston win six pennants and five World Series titles from 1903 to 1918.
Outfielder Ted Williams, considered one of the best hitters in baseball history, was the last major league player to compile a batting average of .400 or greater in a season. He is one of only two players who have twice won the Triple Crown, leading the league in hitting, home runs, and runs batted in (RBIs) in the same season. The other is Rogers Hornsby of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Boston lineups of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s featured stars such as Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, Dwight Evans, Carlton Fisk, Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, and Carl Yastrzemski. Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown in 1967; no player has accomplished the feat since.
