74. The Business Of Baseball :: The Fred Claire Interview
My father and mother introduced my brother Doug, sister lynn, and me to Major League baseball at old Crosley Field in Cincinnati.

Interviews Fred Claire
Before beginning his thirty-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Fred Claire worked for twelve years as a sports editor, columnist, and baseball writer for several Southern California newspapers. His life as a sports writer started with an article he wrote in college, "Make Way For the Coast League," which was published in the All-Star edition of Baseball Magazine in July 1955the first time the All-Star game was played in Milwaukee.
Claire joined the Dodgers in 1969 as the team's Publicity Director and advanced to become General Manager and Executive Vice President in charge of day-to-day operations and player personnel. Claire has received the Robert O. Fishel Award, the Major League Baseball "Executive of the Year" award, the Award of Honor from the American Baseball Coaches Association, and the "Good Guy" award from the Southern California Sports Broadcasters. (He wins the OBC good guy award, too.)
We corresponded with Fred over the course of a few weeks and talked to him on the phone a week before the 2002 All-Star game in Milwaukee. Not only is he a man of great experience in the world of Major League Baseball, he is also very personable and friendlya gentleman and truly a "good guy."

1975 @ 30 - FRED LYNN
Fred Lynn was drafted by the Red Sox in 1973, three years after he was chosen by the Yankees but opted instead to play college ball to further enhance his skills; over three seasons at USC, he was as part of three College World Series championship teams and was named an All-American in 1972. After signing with Boston, Lynn was immediately assigned to the Double-A affiliate in Bristol, Connecticut and, in 53 games, batted .259 with six home runs and 36 RBI. The next season, he was moved to the Triple-A level in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and enjoyed another solid season, averaging .282 at the dish while stroking 21 home runs and plating 68 runners. His numbers were impressive enough to warrant a September call-up to Boston and, while the team lost ground in the playoff race and fell to third in the American League East division, Lynn gave everyone a glimpse of what was to come. He batted an eye-popping .419 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 15 games, and his first major league hit came in his first start, when he crushed the very first pitch he saw for a home run. It was with little surprise the following spring when he was brought to spring training with the promise of making the Boston roster; with manager Darrell Johnson looking for the right mix of astute veterans and hungry youth, Lynn easily won a spot on the Opening Day roster. Just one month into the season, the young center fielder was already winning over the crowds at Fenway Park; while batting .333 with three home runs and 13 RBI, he also dazzled in the outfielder, making acrobatic catches that brought the fans to their feet.

Fred Lynn - 1974-1980
One of Boston's "Gold Dust Twins" (the other being Jim Rice), Fred Lynn came close to signing with the Yankees after he was selected in the 1970 amateur draft but opted instead to play college ball at USC; three years later, the Red Sox drafted him in the second round of the amateur draft in 1973. After navigating through the farm system in just a little over a year, Lynn made his debut in September of 1974 and quickly turned heads as he batted .419 with two home runs and 10 RBI in just 15 games. Those numbers were just a prelude to what fans would enjoy the following season. His 1975 rookie campaign has never been matched since; after batting .331, hitting 21 home runs, knocking in 102 runs, leading the league in doubles, runs score, and slugging percentage, Lynn not only the overwhelming choice for American League Rookie of the Year, but became the only rookie ever to win an MVP award as he helped lead the Red Sox to the post-season for the first time in eight years. Lynn also dazzled in the outfield, making sensational, acrobatic catches on an almost daily basis to earn the first of four Gold Gloves. Perhaps the most memorable highlight of that season came in June against Detroit, when he drove in 10 runs with three home runs, a triple, and a single and collected 16 total bases, tying an AL record. Lynn continued to enjoy success at the major league level despite sub-par efforts by his standards over the next few seasons. In 1979, he managed to top his numbers from his rookie campaign, batting a league-leading .333 with an amazing 39 home runs and 122 RBI, but finished a distant fourth in the MVP vote. Over his six-plus seasons in Boston, he averaged .308 and made All-Star appearances in every season.

A circle change, trademark pitch of one Pedro Martinez, breaks the opposite way: when thrown by a right-hander, it bores in on a left-handed hitter, then tails back, at the last split-second, to catch the inside corner of the plate. A pitch with similar action, though gripped differently, once was called a screwball. But if the third strike is dropped with two outs and a baserunner on first ...

The Baseball Man
Posted by Andrew Torres Gene Mauch was and always will be my favorite manager. He wasn't a character like Casey Stengel or Tommy Lasorda. Mauch always seemed to be wound a little tight, and he took losses hard real hard. And there were plenty of losses, 2,037 of them to be exact, which might have crumbled lesser men. In the early years of the Montreal franchise, sometimes the only cold comfort I had as a fan was in knowing that our manager was considered one of the smartest men in baseball. Of course, there were moments when it seemed that Mauch was intent on showing everybody just how smart he was, but there was no doubting that he was prepared for anything in every game he managed, and while he was with Montreal, I never heard him complain about what he had to work with. He seemed to thrive on the challenge. The baseball gods were not kind to Gene Mauch. He deserved a little luck for his years of dedication to the game, but it never really came his way. At times he made some eye-opening moves, and he would bristle when his strategy was questioned, but he never ducked the heat if the outcome was failure. Mauch had a tinkerer's love for baseball, and as crazy as it sounds, I think he was always trying to manage the perfect game. Who couldn't love a guy like that?
