Catching up with Fred Lynn
August 27, 2004 He is arguably the greatest Red Sox player to patrol center field at Fenway Park. ADVERTISEMENT In 1975, Lynn became the first player in baseball history to win the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors in the same season. That year, Lynn hit .331 with 47 doubles, 21 home runs, 103 runs scored, 105 RBIs and a .566 slugging percentage. His totals in doubles, runs scored and slugging percentage led the league. Lynn was a four-time Gold Glove winner with Boston, and he was a nine-time all-star. He was named the 1983 All-Star Game MVP after becoming the first player to hit a grand slam in the Midsummer Classic. He was also the ALCS MVP in 1982, when he hit .611 (11 for 18) with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five RBIs for the California Angels. These days, Lynn resides in Carlsbad, Calif., with his wife Natalie. Lynn has two children: Jason, 26 and Jennifer, 25. Lynn continues to make appearances for both the Red Sox and Major League Baseball.

Al Kaline won a batting title at the age of 20, won 10 Gold Glove Awards, hit .379 in the 1968 World Series, and reached the coveted 3,000 hit mark despite several nagging injuries in his career. In 1980, he became just the 10th player elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, and at the time of his retirement, Kaline and Ty Cobb were the only Tigers to ever play 20 or more seasons in a Detroit uniform.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Frederic Michael "Fred" Lynn (born February 3 in Chicago, Illinois ) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder who played for the Boston Red Sox California Angels Baltimore Orioles Detroit Tigers (1988-89) and San Diego Padres Lynn started his career for the Red Sox with a phenomenal season in which he won the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards. He also led the American League in doubles runs scored and slugging percentage ; finished second in the batting race with a .331 BA , and won a Gold Glove Award for his defensive play in center field . His MVP-Rookie of the Year double was the first in MLB history, and has only been duplicated by Seattle Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki in But Lynn rarely duplicated his early success. He was hampered by injuries sometimes caused by reckless playsuch as a broken rib caused by crashing into an outfield wall, or knee injuries from breaking up double plays but more often simply of the nagging variety, such as strains and sprains. Because Lynn longed to play in California where he had grown up, the Red Sox traded him to the Angels after the

GROUP DISCUSSION
October 7, 2003 Stephan Finch: I grew up a fan of the Red Sox, though they broke my heart in 1978. No 11-year-old who faithfully spends every goddam afternoon after school watching his heroes, Butch Hobson, Fred Lynn, Bernie Carbo, George "Booomer" Scott, Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski, and even that .209 hitting Denny Doyle squander a 14-game lead at the break. No 11-year-old should suffer the pain of watching Bucky Dent... Bucky FUCKING Dent... send one over the green monster.
Where was I? Oh yeah, a Red Sox fan. But I lived in New York and, Mother Mary and Fred Lynn forgive me, fell in love with Yankees in 1996. Something about that incredible comeback against the Braves, I guess. And, for Chrissakes, is it so bad to cheer for a team that can actually win? A little salve on my wounded 11-year-old's broken dreams? Never mind that I was too ashamed to cry when the Diamondbacks broke us in 2001. Because I'd had those two magic nights in games 5 and 6. Yank-ees, Yank-ees, Yank-ees, I whispered in my sleep.
