T he American League was leading 6-5 going into the eighth when the National League tied it on a Lee Mazzilli home run. Brian Downing led off the bottom of the inning with a single against Bruce Sutter. A sacrifice moved Downing along and Reggie Jackson was walked intentionally. One out later, Graig Nettles singled to right and, with Downing trying to score, Dave Parker rifled the ball to catcher Gary Carter. Carter forced Downing to the inside of the plate and applied the inning-ending tag as Downing made a head-first dive. P ete Rose played the last four innings at first base and set a record as the only player ever to play five different positions in the All-Star competition. During his appearances he had played first base, second base, third base, right field and left field.

Corrections August 12, 2003 Around the Web Fred Lynn from baseball-reference.com Jump directly to Library content from any website! Despite ten 20-HR seasons, one batting title, and All-Star appearances in each of his first nine seasons, Fred Lynn always fell short of expectationsbetrayed by a fragile body and burdened with one of the finest rookie seasons in ML history. In 1975, Lynn captivated Boston with his effortless lefthanded swing, ringing line drives, and almost daily sprawling catches in centerfield as he led a young Red Sox club to within one win of the World Championship. On June 18 he bombed the Tigers with 3 HR, 10 RBI, and 16 total bases in one game, and by season's end Lynn had hit .331, led the AL in runs and doubles, and became the only player ever to be named Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season. In 1979, he was even better, leading the AL in batting (.333) with 39 HR and 122 RBI. Lynn, however, longed to play in his native California, and the Red Sox obliged by trading him to the Angels in

As a successor to Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski in left field for the Boston Red Sox, Jim Rice emerged as the AL's most feared slugger in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The rock-solid 6'2" 200-lb righthander used his quick, compact stroke and immensely strong wrists to send home runs crashing into upper decks or soaring completely over the screen above Fenway Park 's Green Monster. Rice was the classic "strong, silent type," and his silence was often perceived as moodiness. But his feats of strength spoke for themselves. He once broke a bat on a checked swing without hitting the ball, and he has reportedly had golf clubs bend in his hands on the downswing. Rice always had the ability to hit the ball to all fields, but as he aged he began to concentrate on slapping the ball to the opposite field almost exclusively, keeping his batting average near .300 while still averaging over 20 HR per year. His average declined in the late 1980s, reaching career lows in three consecutive seasons through 1989.
