Baseball Fever National League Chicago Cubs PDA View Full Version : Keep Lofton? BillyBuck 10-23-2003, 11:47 AM Hey, it was a fantastic year! At the beginning of the year, not too many people thought we'd get into the playoffs. There were some that said we were a sleeper, but nobody wanted to pick us.
Anyway, my question is what do you do for a leadoff hitter? Lofton really sparked us after we traded for him. I'd like to keep him, but there's really no room for him as a starter. I'm not sure if he'd like to be on the bench.
I believe we really need a true leadoff hitter to be World Series winners. Patterson will be back, but he's not leadoff material. He's more a 3 or 6 hitter. Grudzielanek hit great for average, but he's not really a leadoff hitter either.
Anybody hear anything about what Lofton's thinking? westsidegrounds 10-23-2003, 01:38 PM Dunno about Lofton, but they sure need some help on offense. Since the TribCo has all the money in the world this shouldn't be a problem...but as long as Cub fans are happy with a "good effort" there's no reason to spend $$$. hammy 10-28-2003, 09:08 PM

Baseball Fever National League Chicago Cubs PDA View Full Version : News on Lofton Ravenlord 11-26-2003, 07:11 PM Kenny Lofton - OF - Chicago Cubs Nov 26
Cubs GM Jim Hendry plans on talking with outfielder Kenny Lofton's representatives next week.
The Cubs want to re-sign Lofton to act as a fourth outfielder and insurance in case Corey Patterson isn't ready for the start of the season. Lofton might want to go to a team that would guarantee him a starting job. Cubbie Blue 11-27-2003, 08:41 AM I think it's a solid move to re-sign Lofton for '04. First, Corey Patterson won't be able to handle the full time work load of starting at CF in April and May. Second, realistically, Moises Alou isn't going to stay as heathly as he did in '03. If he goes down with a calf, groin, whatever, Lofton will get plenty of time to play in LF too. The big question is whether Lofton wants to comeback in a bench role. 11-29-2003, 10:01 PM I love Kenny's energy in the club house. He probably will not want to come back as a bench player, but this is where Hendry needs to have some more persuasives talks. Hendry just needs to make Lofton understand that the fact Corey will not be 100 % healthy or 100% back to the 2003 form, he will get the starting job, and the fact Alou's injury history.

Rosie Lou Person was born in 1927 and grew up on a plantation in Midway, Alabama, with one brother and eleven sisters. When she was 15, she began helping her father pick cotton, grow peas and plow the farm. Rosie Lou left Alabama for East Chicago, met Early Person, had 7 children, and seven grandchildren, one of whom she raised, Kenny Lofton. Kenny, who was 4 1/2 pounds when he was born, was so tiny, his bassinet was a dresser drawer. It was Rosie Lou who taught Kenny how to throw his first baseball. Kenny has overcome many obstacles to arrive at where he is today. He promised his grandmother that he would go to college - and he did, on a basketball scholarship to the University of Arizona. He did not start playing baseball until late in his college years. Kenny also overcame a stuttering problem as a child - inspired in many respects by the strength and courage of his grandmother. Unbeknownst to many, Kenny's favorite food is banana pudding, and he has a very special recipe, which he will only share with Rosie Lou. His greatest accomplishment, notwithstanding all of his athletic achievements, was buying his grandmother her home.

He wasted no time making an impact in the game. He hit three singles in just his first three-hit game with the Phillies. He also scored twice. The Phillies won the game 9-3.

July 22, 2003 The Pirates already had made two deals in two days, shipping out relievers Mike Williams and Scott Sauerbeck and getting little in return. They left little doubt Tuesday night that they're tearing apart their roster with the sole intention of reducing salary, as they made a bigger and even more lopsided deal. Pittsburgh plugged the Cubs' gaping holes at third base (with Aramis Ramirez) and center field (with Kenny Lofton) for the low, low price of Jose Hernandez, Triple-A righthander Matt Bruback and a player to be named later. The Pirates also gave up a small amount of cash. Pittsburgh no longer is responsible for the remainder of Ramirez' $3 million salary in 2003 or the $6 million due him in 2004. The contracts of Lofton ($1.025 million with a possible $475,000 in incentives) and Hernandez ($1 million), who both signed one-year free-agent deals after last season, pretty much negate each other. The Pirates likely won't attempt to re-sign Hernandez this fall, and Bruback is a so-so prospect.

    July 28, 2002
Injuries have scuttled the Giants outfield, as Marvin Benard, Barry Bonds, Reggie Sanders and Tsuyoshi Shinjo all missed this weekend's series against the Dodgers. Using Shawon Dunston, Tom Goodwin, Ramon Martinez and Tony Torcato in their stead, San Francisco lost two of those three games. Before their outfield situation could harm their playoff chances any further, the Giants acquired Kenny Lofton from the White Sox Sunday evening in exchange for minor league pitchers Felix Diaz and Ryan Meaux. San Francisco has a wealth of talented starting pitching prospects, including righthanders Jesse Foppert, Boof Bonser, Kurt Ainsworth and Jerome Williams, so it could afford to part with Diaz. Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 1998, Diaz ranked fifth on Baseball America's Giants Top 10 Prospects list in the offseason. His age since has been revised upward a year from 21 to 22, but he remains a coveted prospect. A righthander, he works in the mid-90s with his fastball and also uses a hard slider, a plus changeup and a curveball. He has spent 2002 at Double-A Shreveport, where he has gone 3-5, 2.70 in 12 starts, with 58 strikeouts and just one homer permitted in 60 innings. Diaz missed seven weeks with an ankle injury.

Comments Where exactly does Jeter belong in the lineup? Posted by: MK at December 29, 2003 11:26 AM I'd have rather seen Jeter/Nick Johnson/Soriano at the top of the order last year than anything else. Maybe drop Soriano to 4-5 when he's in a slump, but that top three would have been impressive. Of course, now it'll probably be Lofton/Jeter/Giambi(or Bernie), and when it comes down to it, that's not so bad. Posted by: Barron at December 29, 2003 11:05 PM Now that I look at it a little more closely, Jeter probably should (and will) continue to bat #2. With the addition of Sheffield, the Yankees will endup having to put some top and middle guys down low in the lineup. How about: 1. Lofton
    2. Jeter
    3. Giambi
    4. Sheffield

The Gold Glove Award was announced by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. on Oct. 2, 1957. A panel of sportswriters was chosen to choose the major leagues' outstanding defensive player at each position. In 1958, an award was given for each position in each major league, with players doing the voting. Managers and coaches have selected the Gold Glove teams since 1965, with the provision that they can't vote players from their own teams. Each winner receives a glove or mitt made of gold-finished leather, mounted on a hardwood stand with an engraved plate bearing the player's name, position, team, and year of the award.

    • Having Juan Gonzalez as your sleeper sounds strange, but the Indians would love to get those numbers from him. The listing under prospects should concern Indians fans deeply. Branyan is the only legitimate prospect they have and he's blocked. The engima that is Karim Garcia takes his act to Cleveland (more likely Buffalo) this season.
