Career Leaders, Quick Hooks, Stolen Credit, and a Great Game
By Tom Tippett
July 2, 1999 This month, I'll share with you some surprising members of the all-time career leader boards, talk about managers who seem very quick to yank a starter even when he's pitching well, take Major League Baseball to task for failing to give credit where it is due, and see if I can do justice to what was probably the best game I've ever seen in person.
Career Leaders
One day last week I had a little time to kill while my computer was cranking through a big job, and I decided to indulge in one of my favorite activities. STATS Inc. runs a service called STATS Online, and one of the features of that service is a series of all-time career leader boards. As you probably know, STATS scores every game and supplies real-time feeds to sites such as ESPN.com and STATS' own AOL service. Every night, after the last pitch has been thrown, they update the career leaders in a whole bunch of batting and pitching categories. I get a kick out of watching modern players inch their way up these rankings, closing in on and passing some of the greatest names in baseball history. I'm especially tickled when I see some unexpected names on these lists. As of June 23, there were three active pitchers on the all-time top 100 list for career ERA. Greg Maddux ranked 54th with a 2.79 career ERA and Roger Clemens was 79th at 2.98. Given that Clemens has faced the DH his whole career, I personally think his career mark is superior to Maddux's and many others on that list. Who's the other active pitcher on this list? (The answer appears at the end of this article.)

1999 Post-Season Review St. Louis Cardinals
By Tom Ruane
Edited by Tom Tippett
February 25, 2000 This article takes a look at how the St. Louis Cardinals did in the 1999 season relative to preseason expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1999 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews
Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 864 809 Runs allowed 789 838 Run Margin 75 -29 Wins 88 75 Pythagorean wins 88 78 Placement 2nd 4th The Cardinals in 1999 bore little resemblance to the previous edition of the team. Only two of the starters at the beginning of 1998 were still on the club last year and only one of them (Mark McGwire) was playing regularly by the season's end. Brian Jordan, John Mabry and Delino DeShields left as free agents following 1998; Eric Davis, Scott Radinsky and Shawon Dunston were signed. Ron Gant, Jeff Brantley, Cliff Politte and about $6 million went to the Phillies in exchange for Rick Bottalico and Garrett Stephenson, and three minor leaguers were sent to the Marlins for Edgar Renteria. When the dust settled, it looked as though the Cardinals would improve upon their 1998 mark of 83-79. The league's best offense, combined with adequate pitching, was supposed to put St. Louis in the middle of the NL Central race. Instead, both their hitting and pitching were big disappointments and the Cardinals won 12 fewer games than projected, a fact that didn't prevent the team from breaking its all-time attendance mark. 3,235,833 fans paid their way into Busch Stadium to see Mark McGwire try to set yet another single-season home run record.

Prospect News for April 1st
Due to a lack of personal time, I won't be able to comment on Monday and Tuesday's AL spring results. I'm going to move ahead and recap Wednesday's results in the Grapefruit League and the Cactus League. I apologize. Also, for those of you who are new to the site, my recaps will shift to the minor leagues only once the 2004 season starts. I will have recaps for every minor league throughout the season. If there is MLB news worth commenting on, I will do so. But the primary focus of the site will be the minor leagues. If you want major league news, I suggest Rotoworld . I think it's the best MLB news site. MLB News The big news in baseball is the walkout of Indians CF Milton Bradley and the impending trade of Bradley by G.M. Mark Shapiro. ESPN's Peter Gammons has reported that Shapiro will deal Bradley by Sunday. Bradley's walkout came about after Cleveland Manager Eric Wedge removed Bradley from a spring game after Bradley failed to run out a pop-up that fell in for a hit. The reason given for Bradley's removal from the game at the time was a sore groin. It's hard to say if that was a factor in Bradley's failure to bust it on the pop-up or just a PR excuse for his removal. Bradley did not take the criticism of his lack of hustle well, so he packed up his gear and left the Indians' clubhouse before the exhibition game was over. That's a big no-no in sports. You don't abandon your team without due cause. In essence, Bradley went AWOL on the Indians. This was the last straw.

He's 2 for 2 in the game with two singles. This inning he takes two balls, then two strikes, fouls the fifth pitch off, and finally strikes out swinging. The balls, strikes and the foul ball are indicated as shown on the right. Since it was a swinging strikeout, we write a normal K in his box, and draw a circled to indicate the first out of the inning. The next batter is Micky Morandini, who is for 1 with a walk, hitting a fly ball caught in left field to end the first inning. Mercker starts him off with two strikes, he fouls off the third pitch to stay alive, and then grounds to the second baseman Deshields, who throws over to McGwire at first for the second out of the inning. The play is scored , and we draw a circled in his box for the second out.
