JOHN KRUK JOINS ESPN'S BASEBALL TONIGHT WILL ALSO WORK SELECT GAME TELECASTS
John Kruk, a three-time All-Star outfielder/first baseman, has joined ESPN as a Baseball Tonight analyst. Kruk will join ESPN's Sports Emmy Award-winning team of host Karl Ravech, analysts Harold Reynolds and Peter Gammons, and will primarily appear Sunday through Wednesday during the season. He will also serve as an analyst for select game telecasts.
"Baseball Tonight is the team every former player wants to join," said Kruk. "I'm thrilled to team with Karl, Harold and Peter and look forward to working with them throughout the season."
Kruk will make his Baseball Tonight debut Monday, March 29 at 12:30 a.m. ET (9:30 p.m. PT). During the regular season, Baseball Tonight will generally be televised Monday through Friday at 10 p.m. and 12:17-1 a.m. (9:17 p.m. PT); Saturdays at 10 p.m. and midnight; and Sundays at 12:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
Kruk made his first ESPN appearance during a Spring Training telecast Friday, March 5, when the New York Yankees hosted the Philadelphia Phillies from Tampa, Fla. He called the game with fellow Baseball Tonight analyst Reynolds and play-by-play commentator Sean McDonough.

BY RICK PAULAS ... AND WHAT DID WE LEARN? To fire your manager midseason. Last year, it was the Marlins who spent a midseason stormy night digging up the literal remains of Jack McKeon from his grave, recomposing his decomposed body, and giving him control of the Fighting Fish and their 4,000-fan base, leading them to the promised land that he could not find in his first death. This year it's the Astros that managed to scrape Phil Garner off the literal dung heap, shower him up, scour the symbolic banana peels (which are, in fact, actual used diapers) off his mustache, and suit him up for playoff duty. Next year, when you're standing in line for an unemployment check because of that throwing-a-sack-of-ferrets-at-your-boss misunderstanding, make sure to get Dusty Baker's, Jim Tracy's, and Tony Pena's autographs. You can sell them for drugs. Which, in turn, you can barter for woolen hats. That John Kruk is a golden god. Oh boy, is he ever! I'm blushing just thinking about that stout genius.

If he's half as fast on land, he'll make Ichiro look like the current Baseball Tonight incarnation of John Kruk. Not that yesteryear's Kruk was any more nimble. Jake, RF, Silverado After the table-setting speed of the Mariner, the rest of the lineup is obviously lacking speed. Thus, this is where we'll stick Jake, because Jake is a fast-sounding name. The Postman, LF, The Postman Sure, he's a little overbearing and protective (and his "I bleed red, white, and blue" antics were a little much to take during last year's election), but he consistently produces mediocre numbers. The only knock on him is that he's slow. Nursing-home slow. And until we get the rule changed, horses still aren't allowed on the base paths. Charley Waite, DH

Youkilis shipped out; Neal stays
April 14, 2005 Someone had to go last night, with Curt Schilling coming off the disabled list, and that player was Kevin Youkilis ADVERTISEMENT Youkilis was optioned to Triple A Pawtucket and will join the PawSox tomorrow. The decision figured to come down to Youkilis or reliever Blaine Neal . Neal, though, is out of options, meaning he would have had to clear waivers to be reassigned to Pawtucket. Another reason behind the decision: The Sox last night began a stretch of 28 games in 29 days and would like to have 12 pitchers at their disposal, especially with David Wells scuffling and Schilling's durability something of an unknown. "We weren't comfortable right now with 11 pitchers," said manager Terry Francona . "That's part of it. I've had some reservations about Youk. We love the kid. Love the player, but I don't want to do this kid harm [by not playing him]." Youkilis had appeared in only one game going 1 for 2 with a walk and needs more at-bats at this stage in his career, Francona said. "The way the season was unfolding I was worried about him," the skipper said. "He did nothing to dampen our opinion of him as a player. He's going to be back. This isn't season-long. He knows that."

Peter Gammons gets longwinded and the show comes close to jumping when that fat ass blowhard know-nothing Berman does the show, but that's rare, thank God. Baseball Is... Again
by Joe Katzman Tonight is the Toronto Blue Jays' home opener. Back in 2003, I ran a poem called " Baseball Is " Here's an excerpt: "Baseball is a language of very simple words that tell unbelievably magic tales.
Baseball is three brothers in the same uniform on the same team for one brief summer
Captured forever in a black and white photo on a table by the couch.
Baseball is a glove on a shelf, oiled and tightly wrapped,
Slumbering through the stark winter months."
Slumbering no longer. Baseball is, again. Direct Link Comments (4) TrackBacks (0) E-mail This!

A week ago, the Astros-Cardinals series hadn't yet turned into rip-roaring drama with duelling walk-off home runs . A week ago, the Boston Red Sox hadn't even begun to play

News, Notes and Quotes (May 3, 2004)
by Aaron Gleeman May 02, 2004 When Slow Starters Start Fast I was spending some time over the weekend on one of my favorite hobbies, perusing the many stats over at ESPN.com . Seriously, I go over there to check on one thing and can get lost for hours. The thing that interested me in this trip into Stats Land was Jim Thome 's "splits." Thome hit .364/.456/.714 this April, with seven homers, six doubles, 13 RBIs and 17 runs in 20 games. At first glance, this wouldn't seem noteworthy, as Thome has long been one of baseball's best hitters.
