Read Review of Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy Review Summary About the Author
The Kabbalah Of Koufax
Jun 14 '04
Author's Product Rating
Pros
Yes, he certainly was. Cons Not Sandy. The Bottom Line Read it to understand how Koufax became the greatest lefthanded pitcher ever; and to discover the mysteries as well as the facts surrounding that greatness. Full Review Sandy Koufax was a majestic force as a pitcher. He flashed through the baseball universe like a meteor, pitching 12 seasons in the Major Leagues, only half of them when he was at the height of his powers. Yet he reached through the stratosphere to points unknown, then voluntarily brought his career to a blazing conclusion when it was still at its zenith. He blew the candles out at age 30. Jane Leavy's book captures all the irony and glory in Koufax's career, as well as his well known personal quirks that persist to this day. In a media-driven age, he shuns publicity, preferring to live his life as if he were a normal guy. In his heart, he is. In reality, his achievements are the stuff of legend, and it is difficult indeed for legends to glide under the radar of public scrutiny. In preparing this manuscript, Ms. Leavy was able to meet and speak with Sandy several times, but never for attribution. He was too uncomfortable to be quoted about himself, but not too uncomfortable to authorize his friends to speak to the author for attribution. For without that authorization, there would have been no book. Sandy's friends respect his privacy, but also his right to waive it.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. by Jane Leavy, New York, HarperCollins Publishers, 2002, 281 pp Baseball of all major sports is tinged with the mythic. Maybe because of its long history, characterized by obsessive record keeping and colourful characters like the Babe, Joe D, and Jackie Robinson etc. it holds a special place in Americana. In a country where official distraction has become high art, the summer game endures as a metaphor for our field of dreams. Jane Leavy taps into this in her marvellous sociocultural biography of Sandy Koufax. For the uninitiated, Sandy Koufax wits a phenomenon who streaked across the baseball skies for five brief years and quickly disappeared. Eschewing celebrity, he lived in anonymity while remaining true to his many friends. As time passed and egocentricity became a national pastime, Koufax remained mysterious, a conundrum to the sporting community especially to Jews who had elevated him to iconic status based largely on his refusal to pitch the opening game of the 1965 World Series since it fell on Yore Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Friday September 20, 1996 Sandy Koufax taught pride to generation of young Jews Rabbi Lee Bycel
I remember it as if it were yesterday. It was Oct. 6 the opening day of the 1965 World Series. The Dodgers, behind the great pitching of Sandy Koufax, had won the National League pennant and advanced to the Series. But Koufax, who was slated to start the first game, was not on the mound. He was not even in the stadium. He was not there because it was Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish year. The mid-'60s were a time of great turmoil and transformation in the United States. It was a particularly painful year in the history of Los Angeles with the Watts riots and the social tensions that had led to them. But baseball was still untouched by the many changes that would affect it in later years. It did not suffer from strikes or labor disputes. Most players stayed with one team for their entire career. Baseball was rich in heroes and Sandy Koufax was one of the greatest of his time especially in the eyes and heart of a Jewish boy in southeast Los Angeles. As a Jewish boy and an ardent baseball fan, I had a great need for Jewish heroes especially on the playing field. Koufax's refusal to play on Yom Kippur filled me with pride. I realized that day that no one should ever be embarrassed when practicing one's religion or identifying with one's ancestral culture. Ethnic and religious identity should engender fulfillment and hope.

Send this review to a friend Baseball bio is a real home run REVIEW BY RON KAPLAN What is more remarkable, notes Jane Leavy, author of the new book Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy , is that for a good portion of his career he pitched with an arm injury that kept him in constant pain, which he relieved with a mix of painkillers, ice baths and an analgesic balm that was so strong people cried when they were around him. As Leavy points out, Koufax had it all: movie star good looks, a nimble brain and tons of athletic ability. Like Hank Greenberg, a Jewish first baseman for the Detroit Tigers a generation before, Koufax was an icon for Jews across America. He helped belie the myth that Jews were incapable of excelling in physical endeavors. Success never went to his head. He maintained friendships with his childhood buddies from Brooklyn, and around his teammates he was known for treating everyone the same, regardless of their color or hierarchy as an athlete. More Articles Home Out of Brooklyn - Sandy Koufax Harvey Frommer's Sports Book Review by Harvey Frommer Back in 1991 I had the honor of being selected as the Guest Curator and Executive Producer of "Stars of David: Jews in Sports" at the Klutznik Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibit was to run for six months and was envisioned as showcasing memorabilia and memories of Jewish athletes and their accomplishments. I set out on my mission making phone calls and writing letters to such as Sid Luckman, Dolph Schayes, Red Holzman, Red Auerbach, Mark Spitz and Sandy Koufax, the man known in some circles as the "Greta Garbo of sports," who grew up in Brooklyn just like me. Much to my delight and surprise, Koufax contacted me and said that his three Cy Young award trophies were at Dodger Stadium and not at the Baseball Hall of Fame and that he would tell Dodger owner Peter O'Malley to arrange to have them shipped to the Klutznik Museum so that they could be part of the exhibit. He also volunteered to send two autographed baseballs along - one for the exhibit and one for me. Koufax's affability and generosity were beyond my wildest expectations. The only negative in the experience was the disappearance of the ball Koufax autographed to me. It seems, as the official explanation noted, it got lost somewhere.

by Seymour "Sy" Brody Sanford "Sandy" Koufax, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball, was referred to as the "man with the golden arm." He established one record after another as he went through an 11-year career as a pitcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Koufax was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Evelyn and Jack Braun. His mother divorced his father when he was young and remarried Irving Koufax, a lawyer who played an important role in raising Sandy and his stepsister, Edith. He took the children to the Yiddish theater in New York City and he was very supportive of Sandy's participation in baseball and basketball in Brooklyn's Lafayette High School. Koufax, who loved to play basketball, was constantly at the Jewish Community Center shooting baskets or playing with a team. When he was 15, he pitched for a team in the Baseball Ice Cream League, where baseball scouts watched him with great interest. After completing high school in 1952, he went on a basketball scholarship to the University of Cincinnati. However, the baseball scouts were still after him and finally he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. The first three years were hectic for Koufax, who had trouble controlling his fast ball. At times, he would walk two or three batters before getting the next man out.

How a Southpaw Wound Up Bigger Than Baseball
Reporter Jane Leavy Is Pitch-Perfect With Biography of Sandy Koufax
The Maccabee
By LEE LOWENFISH Baseball arguments are wonderfully passionate and never decisive, but it is hard to demur that during the last five years of his pitching career, 1962-1966, Sandy Koufax was the greatest baseball pitcher who ever lived. In 1963, 1965 and 1966, Koufax led the Los Angeles Dodgers into the World Series, and they won two of them, sweeping the Yankees in four games in 1963. Although Koufax won relatively few games, 165, before injury forced his premature retirement in 1966, an astounding 40 of those wins were shutouts. In 1972 the 36-year-old left-hander became the youngest player ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. "The greatest Jewish athlete since Samson" and "the culmination of 3,000 years of glorious tradition starting with Moses" were just two of the many accolades that came Koufax's way. As his athletic achievements faded into history, Koufax's character and class continued to fascinate. The example of a Brooklyn-born Jew who refused to pitch the opening game of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur has played a great part in establishing Koufax's quiet heroism. That he wound up pitching two shutouts in that series against the Minnesota Twins, including the Game 7 clincher, has only added to the legend. But, except for an autobiography published upon his retirement and a brief career as a television baseball commentator, Koufax has shunned the limelight. He never enjoyed the attention bestowed upon a celebrity, and he treasures his privacy.

Playing in his hometown of Brooklyn, NY, the young Koufax was little used and plagued by control problems. When the team moved to the West Coast, he began showing flashes of brilliance - still, while the Dodgers were in explosive Memorial Coliseum, his numbers weren't terrific. From 1958 to 1960, his ERA was above the league average in each season and he lost more games than he won. In 1961, following the advice of part-time Dodger catcher Norm Sherry to let up on his speed to gain control, he went 18-13 and led the NL in strikeouts with 269. When the team moved to spacious Dodger Stadium in 1962, Koufax made one of the great leaps of baseball history. Between 1962 and 1966, the maturing ace led the NL in wins and shutouts three times each, complete games twice, and strikeouts four times. His 382 strikeouts in 1965 set a new modern day ML record. He broke record that had stood for 61 years, ever since Rube Waddell struck out 347 in 1904.
