A guy that throws what he intends to throw, that's the definition of a good pitcher. Sanford Koufax, known as 'Sandy' is one of the greatest pitchers in the history of baseball . He was also probably, at his peak, the most dominant left-handed pitcher to ever play the game. He is truly a baseball legend Koufax was famous for his blazing fastball, but he often made his competitors strike out with late-breaking curve balls. One problem he faced in his pitching was his tendency to give away what kind of pitch he would use by his varying windups to the pitch. It was one weakness that could not be eliminated despite work with coaches to stop the tendency. Life and Career Sanford Braun was born on 30 December, 1935 in Brooklyn

Koufax reunites with Coach Jucker
by John Bach Only a handful in the sold-out Shoemaker Center even knew he was there. Hall-of-Fame left-hander Sandy Koufax did not want any special attention.
He just wanted to be one of the guys. No interviews. Just one of the fellas who had the privilege of playing baseball under coach Ed Jucker at UC. Those were the conditions in which Koufax, a three-time Cy Young award winner, agreed to return to UC, a campus he had not visited since leaving for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954.
And so, when UC retired the jersey of coach Jucker during halftime ceremonies of the Feb. 13 men's basketball game, Koufax, 64, strolled onto the court with his teammates. His name was never mentioned.
Although it had been 47 years, this was not the first time Koufax and Jucker shared a UC basketball court. Oddly enough, Koufax came to UC to fulfill a basketball scholarship. It just so happened that Jucker coached freshman basketball, as well as varsity baseball. "I didn't even know he could pitch," Jucker said. "At the end of the basketball season, he told me to come over to the gym to take a look at him.

By Rob Olds Career Achievements Cy Young - '63, '65, '66 NL MVP - 1963 Pitching Triple Crown - '63, '65, '66 All-Star - 1961-66 Like many other power pitchers, Sandy Koufax had problems harnessing his tremendous talents at the beginning of his career. Through the first six years of his career, Koufax had a record of 36-38. But, during a spring training game in 1961, Dodger catcher Norm Sherry told Koufax to slow down and to try not to throw his fastball quite so hard. The rest, as they say, is history. The 1961 season saw Koufax dominate the N.L. with an 18-13 record and a league leading 269 strikeouts in 255 innings. The Dodger fireballer went 14-7 with an ERA of 2.54 in 1962, including his first career no-hitter on June 30 of that year, before an injury forced him to end his season early. In 1963, Koufax became the most dominant pitcher in baseball, winning 25 games and losing only 5 (and his first Cy Young Award) with an ERA of 1.88, 306 strikeouts in 311 innings, and 11 shutouts, while holding opponents to a meager .189 batting average.

Sanford Braun "Sandy" Koufax (born December 30 ) strung together five amazing seasons as a Major League Baseball left-handed starting pitcher in the 1960s before arthritis ended his career at the age of 31. He played his entire career for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers Born in Brooklyn, New York , Koufax was a natural athlete as a child, excelling particularly on the basketball court, which helped win him an athletic scholarship to the University of Cincinnati . While there, he pitched occasionally for the baseball team and caught the eye of scouts from his hometown Brooklyn Dodgers with whom he signed a contract in . Although he was a long way from being ready for the major leagues, the rules at the time stipulated that because he had received a then-substantial signing bonus he had to spend two years in the majors before being sent to the minor leagues . Ironically, the Dodgers cut their future manager, Tommy Lasorda , to make room for Koufax.

But tonight, September the 9th, nineteen hundred and 65, he made the toughest walk of his career, I'm sure, because through eight innings he has pitched a perfect game. He has struck out 11, he has retired 24 consecutive batters, and the first man he will look at is catcher Chris Krug, big right-hand hitter, flied to second, grounded to short. Dick Tracewski is now at second base and Koufax ready and delivers: curveball for a strike. and 1 the count to Chris Krug. Out on deck to pinch-hit is one of the men we mentioned earlier as a possible, Joey Amalfitano. Here's the strike 1 pitch to Krug: fastball, swung on and missed, strike 2. And you can almost

Sandy Koufax and the 1965 World Series
by Richard Lederer ESPN Sports Classic replayed the Seventh Game of the 1965 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins last Saturday. Watching the videotape of this game was an enjoyable way to spend a weekend morning in January. Let me set the stage. The Dodgers had won 13 consecutive games in the second half of September, including seven shutouts, to overtake the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants (fresh off a 14-game win streak at the beginning of the month). Sandy Koufax beat the Milwaukee Braves, 2-1, on Saturday, October 2 to clinch the National League pennant in the second to last game of the season. Koufax, who led the N.L. that year in wins (26), ERA (2.04), complete games (27), and innings pitched (335 2/3), struck out 13 Braves to increase his then modern single-season record to 382. Over in the American League, the Twins clinched their first pennant on the previous Sunday when

Koufax used this left-hander's glove during his career with the Dodgers. Baseball gloves were introduced about 1870 but were not popular until Al Spalding, star of the Chicago White Stockings, wore one in 1876. view description Sandy Koufax Legendary Strikeout Pitcher Koufax's influence went beyond the mound. In 1965, he chose not to pitch the opening game of the World Series because the game fell on Yom Kippur, a Jewish holy day. Some criticized him for missing such an important game, however, Koufax came back to play in three of the remaining six games, pitching a shut-out victory in the seventh and deciding game to win the Series.
